Effect of Prolonged Military Field Training on Neuromuscular and Hormonal Responses and Shooting Performance in Warfighters

2018

Introduction: Previous studies have shown that military field training (MFT) has effects on warfighters’ hormonal responses, neuromuscular performance, and shooting accuracy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes in body composition, upper and lower body strength, serum hormone concentrations of testosterone (TES) and cortisol (COR), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and shooting accuracy during prolonged MFT. Methods: Serum hormone concentrations, isometric strength of the upper and lower extremities, and shooting performance were measured four times during the study: before MFT (PRE), after 12 d (MID), at the end of MFT (PO…

Nonlocal Third Order Boundary Value Problems with Solutions that Change Sign

2014

We investigate the existence and the number of solutions for a third order boundary value problem with nonlocal boundary conditions in connection with the oscillatory behavior of solutions. The combination of the shooting method and scaling method is used in the proofs of our main results. Examples are included to illustrate the results.

The chemical composition of the flowers essential oil of Inula crithmoides (Asteraceae) growing in aeolian islands, Sicily (Italy) and its biocide pr…

2021

Essential oils have been used for a long time in several fields of interest. Recently, they have also been applied in the conservation of Cultural Heritage to contrast biodeterioration replacing the most current biocides toxic for humans and environment. Inula crithmoides L. (syn. Limbarda crithmoides (L.) Dumort) is a halophyte species distributed along the Mediterranean coasts and it is used as an edible vegetable since the young leaves or shoots are eaten raw or cooked. Several biological properties have been determined for this plant including antimicrobial activities. In this study the volatile composition of the aerial part of an accession from the Aeolian Islands, Sicily (Italy) is d…

Holm Oak Quercus ilex L.

2018

The holm oak is an evergreen tree species representative of Mediterranean forests. The largest populations of this species are in the Iberian Peninsula, forming the tree cover of an agro-silvo-pastoral system called “dehesa” in Spain and “montado” in Portugal. The high ecological and economic value of the species is of interest for rural development. The main current product are the acorns used for feeding Iberian black pigs, which are the basis of an important gastronomic industry. In addition, several bioactive compounds with new potential industrial applications in nutrition, pharmacology and cosmetics have been identified in acorns of oak species. Plantations with holm oak seedlings myc…

Correlation-Based Cell Degradation Detection for Operational Fault Detection in Cellular Wireless Base-Stations

2013

The management and troubleshooting of faults in mobile radio networks are challenging as the complexity of radio networks is increasing. A proactive approach to system failures is needed to reduce the number of outages and to reduce the duration of outages in the operational network in order to meet operator’s requirements on network availability, robustness, coverage, capacity and service quality. Automation is needed to protect the operational expenses of t he network. Through a good performance of the network element and a low failure probability the network can operate more efficiently reducing the necessity for equipment investments. We present a new method that utilizes the correlatio…

Experimentally Induced Twinning in Plants

1955

IT is well known that characteristic changes in leaf-form and growth habit can be induced by treating shoot apices with synthetic growth substances. The question arises as to whether entire plant embryos also can be induced to develop abnormally by the action of growth regulators. For this purpose the solutions must be applied in a suitable manner to the earliest embryo stages through the growing carpel walls, or it would be necessary to remove the still quite small embryos and to expose them in vitro to the proper influences. Both methods are difficult to apply and have as yet proved unsatisfactory.

Multiplicity of ground states for the scalar curvature equation

2019

We study existence and multiplicity of radial ground states for the scalar curvature equation $$\begin{aligned} \Delta u+ K(|x|)\, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}=0, \quad x\in {{\mathbb {R}}}^n, \quad n>2, \end{aligned}$$when the function $$K:{{\mathbb {R}}}^+\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}^+$$ is bounded above and below by two positive constants, i.e. $$0 0$$, it is decreasing in (0, 1) and increasing in $$(1,+\infty )$$. Chen and Lin (Commun Partial Differ Equ 24:785–799, 1999) had shown the existence of a large number of bubble tower solutions if K is a sufficiently small perturbation of a positive constant. Our main purpose is to improve such a result by considering a non-perturbative situation: we ar…

Factors affectingin vitro shoot proliferation ofMyrtus communis L.: A comparison of adult and seedling material

1998

Two stocks of shoots growingin vitro, obtained from either seedlings or adult plants, were used to study the effects of material origin, the number of previous subcultures on the establishment medium, the explant type, and the macronutrients on shoot multiplication and elongation inMyrtus communis L., always in the presence of 4.4. μM benzyladenine (BA). Shoot proliferation was influenced mainly by stock origin, with higher responses from the adult material than from the seedling material, and by the number of subcultures, with the largest rates of multiplication and elongation in the first subculture. In the first subculture, the adult material was characterized by high rates of shoot mult…

Fruit Regulates Bud Sprouting and Vegetative Growth in Field-Grown Loquat Trees (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.): Nutritional and Hormonal Changes

2013

The effects of fruit on bud sprouting and vegetative growth were compared on fruiting and defruited loquat trees from fruit set onward. Carbohydrate and nitrogen content in leaves and bark tissues and hormone concentrations were studied during the fruit development and vegetative growth periods. On defruited trees, a significant proportion of buds sprouted in winter, whereas buds from fruiting trees sprouted only in the spring when fruit reached its final size. Furthermore, when panicles were completely removed in autumn, the buds also sprouted. In addition, fruit directly affected vegetative growth by reducing shoot length. An effect of sink removal ( flower or fruit) promoting bud sprouti…
