Displacement(s) and Identity in the Libyan Story "Al-Malika" by Nağwa Binšatwan

2017

In a context of political repression and social oppression like Libya used to be before the Arab Spring, the literary representation of displacement assumes a central role and sometimes becomes a metaphor of an existential condition. Starting from the analysis of some short stories taken from Al-malika by Nağwa Benshatwan – one of the most interesting voices of Libya’s Contemporary literary landscape – this paper will focus on the concept of displacement interpreted not only as a physical and/or figurative migration but also as a tool for representing personal and collective identity Dans le climat de répression politique et d’oppression sociale qui caractérise la Libye d’avant la “révoluti…

Her first collection of stories, entitled Yasquṭ al-maṭar… tamūt al-amīrah (The rain falls… the princess dies) and published in 2012 describes the anxieties and worries of the inhabitants of Fahaheel (Faḥīḥīl), the small town located in southern Kuwait, where the writer was born and lived her childhood and adolescence and forged her identity. In the thirteen short stories that make up the collection, space – which is a ‘space of memory’ – represents not merely a geographical framework but rather the real object of narration. Gli Inglesi in Cina. Harriet Martineau tra tradizione e innovazione

2012

2013

The aim of the essay is the analysis of the supernatural elements in Kipling’s ‘The Mark on The Beast”, Conan Doyle’s “Lot no. 409”, Wells’ “The Truth about Peycraft” conceived of as the expression of the revitalisation of the Gothic imagery which, through the Short Story, serve to voice and exorcise late Victorian crisis, de-Constructing late Victorian identity. What is the value of plurilingualism?

2016

This article seeks to answer the question, 'What is the value of plurilingualism'? by first of all exploring some different terms from Finnish and English that suggest different ways of understanding the world. The article then goes on to outline the importance of mother tongues as a way of rooting a child into a culture, whilst plurilingualism provides the child with different ways of understanding the world. The second half of the article uses a story to explore the challenges of sharing different understandings with others and outlines how these ideas can be introduced to children. nonPeerReviewed

In…
