Vegetation series as a marker of interactions between rural settlements and landscape: new insights from the archaeological record in Western Sicily
2020
[EN] Plant communities are complex and dynamic elements of the landscape, intertwined with both natural factors and human activities. Vegetation series reflect the environmental characteristics of the landscape, but also the anthropic impact, one of the exogenous forces that most profoundly affects the landscape formation process. This paper aims to investigate the interactions between long-term human settlement catchment areas and vegetation series. The case study area of the Sicani Mountains (Central-Western Sicily) proved to be an ideal place to perform GIS-based spatial analysis in order to compare a data set of rural archaeological sites and land units created through the mapping of ve…
Greeks and Latins: a Disciplining Case in Monreale Archdiocese
2022
Soil data from Italy (Sicily)
2013
Soil erosion and water deficit traditionally affect agriculture of Mediterranean areas. In Sicily, these issues are complicated by the very accentuated spatial and temporal variability of rainfall that concentrates in the northern coast and in the period from October to April. Modelling of the hydrological processes may help to prevent soil loss, predict the fate of agrochemicals in the soil profile, optimize dry agriculture and manage irrigation. However, agro-hydrological simulation models require the detailed knowledge of the soil hydraulic properties, i.e. the water retention curve and the hydraulic conductivity function. The Sicilian regional administration has recently published a new…
New insights on the Carburangeli Cave speleogenesis: a flank margin cave in Northern Sicily (Italy)
2022
Flank margin caves form in coastal regions by mixing dissolution. Their development is controlled by the position of the freshsalt water mixing boundary, which in turn, is related to sea-level position. They are characterized by a typical cave pattern and cave-wall morphologies and represent good indicators of past sea levels. This contribution shows the results of recent studies conducted in the Carburangeli Cave, a small sub-horizontal cavity developed in Northern Sicily, close to Palermo. This cave was firstly known for paleontological and archaeological findings and for these reasons, along with its speleological and biological interest, a Nature Reserve has been instituted by the Sicil…
The management of migrants' emergency in Sicily (Italy), between suspension of rights and controversies of planning
2015
The attention of the media and international news is addressed to the migration issues, just during the landings of illegal migrants, and especially when these landings are linked to the deaths of migrants. However, for nearly thirty years, Sicily, among the Southern European regions most affected by the phenomenon of migration flows, has assumed the role of “gate” which introduces to Europe from Africa, making a bridge among nearest worlds, but often extremely different. This condition is, in fact, a historical value, given that Sicily has always been the crossroads of migration flows among Mediterranean Europe, Asia and Africa which allowed the exchange among cultures, ethnicities and rel…
HUMAN ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION IN ANCIENT SICILY ANALYSED BY BONE STRESS MARKERS

Stipe dentro il pithos
2005
The subject of the chapter is the study of all the materials collected in the so-called “stipe inside the pithos” found on the acropolis of Gela during the excavations conducted in the 1960s. The materials are examined and an interpretative hypothesis is advanced on the divinity to whom the offering is addressed
2021
The essay deals with the birth and the series changes relating to the construction of stone domes set on chapels in Sicily in the early sixteenth century. The selected examples and the solutions put in place by architects and builders of the time show a surprising and modern intertwining of languages, between Gothic, Renaissance and ancient local, and reveal the reasons for choices that contain an ideological component or a design and construction practice, facilitated by contracts by analogy.
LA SFIDA CONTEMPORANEA DELLA TRADIZIONE COSTRUTTIVA: RICOSTRUIRE LO SPAZIO. SISTEMI VOLTATI IN PIETRA REALIZZATI IN CANTIERE E NEI LABORATORI DIDATTI…
2018
Il duomo di San Giorgio a Ragusa-The Cathedral of St. Giorge in Ragusa
2015
The volume traces the story of a large religious factory of the eighteenth century in Sicily, a work of the architect Rosario Gagliardi: the cathedral of St. George in Ragusa. The two Raguse after the earthquake of 1693; the churc…
