The spreading of the invasive italian wall lizard on Vulcano, the last island inhabited by the critically endangered aeolian wall lizard

2018

[EN] The Aeolian Wall Lizard (Podarcis raffoneae) is an endemic species of the Aeolian Archipelago of Italy (Mediterranean Sea). Its distribution is limited to three islets and two relict populations on a relatively large island: Vulcano (a population on the summit of Gran Cratere volcano and another on Capo Grosso promontory). The critically endangered Aeolian Wall Lizard is threatened by the introduction of the Italian Wall Lizard (Podarcis siculus), which successfully competes and hybridizes with the endemic lizard. The invasive lizard is widespread on Vulcano, although the literature does not provide the exact distribution. Our first aim was updating the distribution of the Italian Wall…

I doni di Medea. Tra reciprocità e vendetta

2019

Seed germination reports of high mountain species native to Mount Etna (Sicily)

2020

The germination ability of five endemic species from the high mountain belt of Mt. Etna were studied; they are Astragalus siculus, Erysimum etnense, Senecio squalidus subsp. aethnensis, Silene italica subsp. sicula, and Tanacetum vulgare subsp. siculum. Mature seeds were collected in the field, within an elevation range of 1700–2000 m a.s.l. Different experimental conditions were tested and the best methods with optimal germination results are provided and compared for each species. First germination records are given for 4 out of 5 of the investigated taxa.

Settore L-ANT/02 - Storia GrecaThe history of Greek Sicily is marked at its key moments by the persistent image of Dinomenid Gelon. This work analyses the paradigmatic value taken on by his figure in the civic memory of the people of Syracuse and in historiographic production. It also reconstructs the political dynamics which pushed the principal tyrants of Syracuse (from Dionysius I to Hiero II) to establish comparisons with Gelon. His exemplum was used to legitimate political actions and commitment against the Carthaginianparticular attention was also given to the Library of History of Diodorus Siculus and the role that the figure of Dinomenid assumes in itregarding these aspects the work of this author seems to have sometimes the signs of a personal interpretation of history: one that cannot always be explained in relation to the use of the two principal sources for Western history Timaeus and Philistos.

Análisis Biométricos del Sapo Verde Siciliano, Bufo siculus (Stöck et al. 2008), Población que Vive en Sicilia (Italia)

2013

Morphometry structure of Sicilian green toad from the Nature Reserve "Monte Pellegrino" (north-western Sicily) was studied. A total of 666 individuals (354 males and 312 females) were captured in 2003 during reproduction period. Meaningful differences have statistically emerged among the two sexes and the body weight is the best parameter (up to 92% correct classification), followed by the length of the body (up to 90% correct classification). The simultaneous use of all the examined characters only increases of 1% the probability for correct discrimination of the sex. In comparison to the dimension of other green toad populations studied by other authors, the body size of this sicilian pop…
