Applying Artificial Intelligence Methods to Detect and Classify Fish Calls from the Northern Gulf of Mexico

2021

Passive acoustic monitoring is a method that is commonly used to collect long-term data on soniferous animal presence and abundance. However, these large datasets require substantial effort for manual analysis

One-dimensional iterative algorithm for three-dimensional point-spread function engineering.

2001

We present a new method with which to binarize pupil filters designed to control the three-dimensional irradiance distribution in the focal volume of an optical system. The method is based on a one-dimensional iterative algorithm, which results in efficient use of computation time and in simple, easy to fabricate binary filters. An acceptable degree of resemblance between the point-spread function of the annular binary filter and that of its gray-tone counterpart is obtained.

Total Variation Based Image Restoration

2004

For the purpose of image restoration the process of image formation can be modeled in a first approximation by the formula [207] $$ {u_d} = Q\{ II(k*u) + n\} , $$ (1.1) where u represents the photonic flux k is the point spread function of the optical-captor joint apparatus П is a sampling operator, i.e., a Dirac comb supported by the centers of the matrix of digital sensors, n represents a random perturbation due to photonic or electronic noise, and Qis a uniform quantization operator mapping ℝ to a discrete interval of values, typically [0, 255].

Axial resolution in two-color excitation fluorescence microscopy by phase-only binary apodization

2005

We study the effect of a kind of binary phase-only filters, the Toraldo filters, in two-color excitation fluorescence microscopy. We show that by simple insertion of a properly designed Toraldo filter in one of the illumination arms the axial resolution of the system is significantly improved. Specifically, the main peak of the point spread function is narrowed by 22% along the axial direction.

Manufacture of pupil filters for 3D beam shaping

2007

In a previous work we presented a new method for binarizing pupil filters designed to control the three-dimensional (3D) irradiance distribution in the focal volume of apodized systems. The method is based in the fact that the 3D amplitude point spread function of an axially-symmetrical system can be recovered entirely from a one-dimensional (1D) set of regularly spaced amplitude samples. Hence we proposed the use of 1D iterative Fourier transform algorithm to binarize a, properly mapped, version of the amplitude transmittance of the filter. The binary masks obtained consist of a set of opaque and transparent concentric annular zones. In this paper we have built two of these masks with oppo…

Variational multiframe restoration of images degraded by noisy (stochastic) blur kernels

2013

This article introduces and explores a class of degradation models in which an image is blurred by a noisy (stochastic) point spread function (PSF). The aim is to restore a sharper and cleaner image from the degraded one. Due to the highly ill-posed nature of the problem, we propose to recover the image given a sequence of several observed degraded images or multiframes. Thus we adopt the idea of the multiframe approach introduced for image super-resolution, which reduces distortions appearing in the degraded images. Moreover, we formulate variational minimization problems with the robust (local or nonlocal) L^1 edge-preserving regularizing energy functionals, unlike prior works dealing wit…

Drawback of ICA Procedure on EEG: Polarity Indeterminacy at Local Optimization

2008

Independent component analysis (ICA) has been extensively applied to reject artifacts in electroencephalography (EEG) signal processing. The first step is to extract the independent component activations from the electrode records, and then project the desired components back to the electrodes. After the composition of the projected component is analyzed in details under ICA procedure, this study shows that since ICA may extract some source components at the local optimization in high-dimensional EEG signal space, the artificial polarity indeterminacy may happen on the projected component at some electrodes. By numerical simulations, this issue also exhibits that this polarity ambiguity occ…

Determination of tyrosine and phenylalanine by derivatization with nitric acid and differential pulse polarography

1987

Abstract The determination of tyrosine and phenylalanine by differential pulse polarography, after separation by thin-layer chromatography and derivatization with nitric acid to form the nitro compounds, is proposed. Experimental conditions for the derivatization treatment are established and the polarographic determination is optimized.

Non-separable local polynomial regression cell-average multiresolution operators. Application to compression of images

2016

Abstract Cell-average multiresolution Harten׳s algorithms have been satisfactorily used to compress data. These schemes are based on two operators: decimation and prediction. The accuracy of the method depends on the prediction operator. In order to design a precise function, local polynomial regression has been used in the last years. This paper is devoted to construct a family of non-separable two-dimensional linear prediction operators approximating the real values with this procedure. Some properties are proved as the order of the scheme and the stability. Some numerical experiments are performed comparing the new methods with the classical linear method.
