Time evolution of the microwave second-harmonic response of MgB2 superconductor

We report on transient effects in the microwave second-order response of two ceramic MgB2 samples. The time evolution of the second-harmonic signal is investigated for about 500 s after the sample has been exposed to a variation of the dc magnetic field. We suggest that during the first seconds the response is determined by diffusive motion of fluxons, while in the time scale of minutes it is ruled by magnetic relaxation over the surface barrier.

Spatially resolved measurement of nonequilibrium quasiparticle relaxation in superconducting Al

Spatially resolved relaxation of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in a superconductor at ultralow temperatures was experimentally studied. It was found that the quasiparticle injection through a tunnel junction results in the modification of the shape of the I-V characteristic of a remote ``detector'' junction. The effect depends on the temperature, injection current, and proximity to the injector. The phenomena can be understood in terms of the creation of quasiparticle charge and energy disequilibrium characterized by two different length scales ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{{Q}^{*}}~5$ and ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{{T}^{*}}~40$ $\ensuremath{\mu}$m. Energy dependence of the electron-boson coupling strength in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4−δ

In the conventional theory of superconductivity the critical temperature Tc is determined by the electron-phonon coupling constant and the phonon cut-off frequency. The hallmark experiments of McMillan and Rowell demonstrated that bosons (phonons) responsible for pairing can be observed through the frequency dependence of the gap parameter. Determination of the electron-boson coupling strength in high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates is, however, not an easy task. Lifetime of the superconductive state in short and long Josephson junctions

We study the transient statistical properties of short and long Josephson junctions under the influence of thermal and correlated fluctuations. In particular, we investigate the lifetime of the superconductive metastable state finding the presence of noise induced phenomena. For short Josephson junctions we investigate the lifetime as a function both of the frequency of the current driving signal and the noise intensity and we find how these noise-induced effects are modified by the presence of a correlated noise source. Size-dependent enhancement of superconductivity in Al and Sn nanowires: shape-resonance effect

A shape-dependent superconducting resonance can be expected when an energy level associated with the transverse motion in a wire passes through the Fermi surface. We show that the recently observed width-dependent increase of ${T}_{c}$ in Al and Sn nanowires is a consequence of this shape-resonance effect.

Effects of Weak Links in the Nonlinear Microwave Response of MgB2 Superconductor

We report experimental results of second-harmonic (SH) response at microwave frequency in several ceramic MgB2 samples, prepared by different methods. The SH signal has been investigated as a function of the temperature and DC magnetic field. The investigation has been carried out at low magnetic fields, where nonlinear processes arising from motion of Abrikosov fluxons are ineffective. We show that the low-temperature SH emission is ascribable to processes involving weak links. Specific changes occur in the cells of the uppers layers of the cat's superior colliculus when a two dimensional noise (background) is superimposed onto a deterministic signal (spot of light). Some of the measurements can be interpreted as meaning that some cells only react to certain relative movements of object (spot) and background (noise). The movement of the visual background is interpreted as environmental movement occurring due to the animal's own movement. Sympathetic neurons can produce and respond to interleukin 6

Neuronal expression of cytokines is an area of active investigation in the contexts of development, disease, and normal neural function. Although cultured rat sympathetic neurons respond very weakly to exogenous interleukin 6 (IL-6), we find that addition of soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) and IL-6 enhances neuronal survival in the absence of nerve growth factor. Neutralizing monoclonal antibodies against IL-6 block these effects.
