A political movement initiated in Mexico known as Zapatism is analysed through the visual objects displayed in their websites on the Internet. The objective is to make a cultural analysis and interpretation of the visual representation of Zapatistas websites, to expose their visual identity through the most salient visual signs and their corresponding cultural meanings. The analytical method introduced in this study is divided in three major aims: consolidating a pool of images retrieved from Zapatistas websites, finding patterns of visual elements within these images, and providing an interpretation for the visual signs emerging from such patterns. The aim of this research is to find a solution for the standardization of road signs in the EU zone by a comparative analysis of different national sign systems to establish a common set from a single country. This work is based on the idea that road sign standardization might increase the safety level of transnational journeys and foster the relationships among the various members of the EU Community. Signs in public space reflect ‘normalcy’ in a community. The authors ask what restricting signs tell us about a society? In order to explore the system and variation in the ways dog signs manifest different norms and control, they compare two different data sets: dog signs in a Northern European town, Jyväskylä in Finland, and two Eastern European villages in Romania. They apply a qualitative methodology based on visual communication, geosemiotics and linguistic landscape studies.
