Designing solid optical sensors for in situ passive discrimination of volatile amines based on a new one-step hydrophilic PDMS preparation
2016
Abstract We reported an optimal material for embedding chemoresponsive dyes based on modified commercial PDMS. A new approach to impart hydrophilicity to H-PDMS in an unique step was developed by addition of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and in absence of basic or acid aqueous mixtures or hydroxyl-compounds during the PDMS coating process. This incorporation significantly enhances the performance of PDMS-based devices for sensing applications. New colorimetric sensors for passive detection and in situ discrimination of volatile amines have been obtained. The limit of detection achieved was 1.5 mg m −3 for both, dimethylamine and methylamine, suitable to control real working atmospheres. T…
One‐Pot Synthesis of a New High‐Aluminium‐Content Super‐Microporous Aluminosilicate
2006
A new super-microporous aluminosilicate having a high aluminium content (Si/Al ca. 1) has been prepared through a surfactant-assisted procedure with the use of a commercially available binary precursor (di-sec-butoxyaluminooxytriethoxysilane) as a single source of both Al and Si. The formation of super-micropores is a result of a significant network shrinkage associated with the thermal elimination of the surfactant. This solid has been studied by X-ray powder diffraction, electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and porosimetry. A preliminary analysis of the acidity and the catalytic activity of the super-microporous solid for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx is…
Epoxidation of dibenzocycloalkenes on Ti–Ge-MCM-41 and Ti-SBA-15 catalysts
2005
Abstract Epoxidation of a series of dibenzocycloalkenes: phenanthrene, 5H-dibenzo[ a , e ]cycloheptene, 5H-dibenzo[ a , c ] cycloheptene, 5,6-dihydrodibenzo[ a , e ]cyclo-octene, and dibenzo[ a , e ]cyclooctene with hydrogen peroxide was investigated on Ti- and Ge-modified Ti-incorporated-type mesoporous catalysts including MCM-41 and SBA-15 structures looking for the effect of the porous texture and Ge-promoting on both activity and selectivity to epoxide and H 2 O 2 efficiency. Ti–Ge-MCM-41 catalysts (Si/Ti = 43; Si/Ge = 85 and Si/Ti = 41; Si/Ge = 62) were prepared by a one-pot surfactant-assisted procedure based on the use of a cationic surfactant (CTAB, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide), …
Controlling the cohesion of cement paste
2005
The main source of cohesion in cement paste is the nanoparticles of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which are formed upon the dissolution of the original tricalcium silicate (C(3)S). The interaction between highly charged C-S-H particles in the presence of divalent calcium counterions is strongly attractive because of ion-ion correlations and a negligible entropic repulsion. Traditional double-layer theory based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation becomes qualitatively incorrect in these systems. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in the framework of the primitive model of electrolyte solution is then an alternative, where ion-ion correlations are properly included. In addition to divalent calciu…
Evaluation of changes in ion release and biological properties of NeoMTA‐Plus and Endocem‐MTA exposed to an acidic environment
2018
AIM To analyse in vitro changes in ion release and biological properties of Endocem-MTA (Maruchi, Wonju, Korea) and NeoMTA-Plus (Avalon Biomed Inc, Bradenton, FL, USA) exposed to acidic or neutral environment on human dental periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs). METHODOLOGY Cell viability and wound healing assays were performed using eluates of each material. Cell death and changes in phenotype induced by the set endodontic sealer eluates were evaluated through flow cytometry. To evaluate cell attachment to the different materials, hPDLSCs were directly seeded onto the material surfaces and analysed by scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition of the materials was determin…
Cultivation of primmorphs from the marine sponge Suberites domuncula: morphogenetic potential of silicon and iron.
2002
Abstract Marine demosponges (phylum Porifera) are rich sources for potent bioactive compounds. With the establishment of the primmorph system from sponges, especially from Suberites domuncula , the technology to cultivate sponge cells in vitro improved considerably. This progress was possible after the elucidation that sponges are provided with characteristic metazoan cell adhesion receptors and extracellular matrix molecules which allow their cells a positioning in a complex organization pattern. This review summarizes recent data on the cultivation of sponges in aquaria and—with main emphasis—of primmorphs in vitro. It is outlined that silicon and Fe(+++) contribute substantially to the f…
Redox tuning and species distribution in Maya Blue-type materials: a reassessment.
2013
Maya Blue-type specimens prepared from indigo (1 wt %) plus kaolinite, montmorillonite, palygorskite, sepiolite, and silicalite are studied. Liquid chromatography with diode array detection, ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, and pyrolysis-silylation gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses of the extracts from these specimens combined with spectral and solid-state voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning electrochemical microscopy techniques provide evidence for the presence of a significant amount of dehydroindigo and isatin accompanying indigo and other minority organic compounds in all samples. Solid-state electrochemist…

Sorption and mechanism studies of Cu2+, Sr2+ and Pb2+ ions on mesoporous aluminosilicates/zeolite composite sorbents
2020
Abstract The research aimed to develop a novel mesoporous aluminosilicate/zeolite composite by the template co-precipitation method. The effect of aluminosilicate (AlSi) and zeolite (NaY) on the basic properties and adsorption capacity of the resultant composite was conducted at different mass ratios of AlSi/NaY (i.e., 5/90, 10/80, 15/85, 20/80, and 50/50). The adsorption characteristics of such composite and its feedstock materials (i.e., aluminosilicates and zeolite) towards radioactive Sr2+ ions and toxic metals (Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions) in aqueous solutions were investigated. Results indicated that BET surface area (SBET), total pore volume (VTotal), and mesopore volume (VMeso) of prepared m…
Aggregation and Gel Formation in Basic Silico−Calco−Alkaline Solutions Studied: A SAXS, SANS, and ELS Study
1999
Gelation of strongly basic silico−alkaline solutions was promoted by appropriate additions of calcium ions. The structure of the aggregates formed in the precursor sols and the resulting gels were studied, within a wide length scale, using small-angle X-ray, small-angle neutron, and elastic light scattering. The study of the kinetics of aggregation was performed in situ. The experimental results demonstrate that gels are composed of aggregates exhibiting a fractal structure, large particles formed in the solutions just after calcium addition and, in some cases, small primary particles remaining in the solution phase. The structural features of the gels are strongly dependent on the concentr…
