Crystal size distribution in Jurassic Ferrar flows and sills (Victoria Land, Antarctica): evidence for processes of cooling, nucleation, and crystall…
1996
Jurassic Ferrar rocks in Victoria Land (Antarctica) occur predominantly as basaltic or andesitic flows and sills. Both show characteristic petrographical and chemical variations, which can be related to in-situ differentiation processes. Such characteristics have been investigated at one flow (“Colonnade flow”) and one sill (“Thumb Point sill”) in the Prince Albert Mountains (Central Victoria Land) based on a statistical grain size analysis and the application of the crystal size distribution theory. A third magma body (“HiTi-unit”), which in previous literature was described as a flow, does not show clear similarities to either the flow or sill. Sill and flow are in-situ differentiated wit…
BiZact tonsilektomijas un konvencionālās tonsilektomijas metožu salīdzinājums
2022
Bipolar Quantum Molecular Resonance versus Blunt Dissection tonsillectomy
2015
Bipolar Quantum Molecular Resonance versus Blunt Dissection tonsillectomy. Objectives: This study compared a quantum molecular resonance tonsillectomy (QMRT) to a standard blunt dissection tonsillectomy (BDT) for effectiveness and safety. Methodology: From January 2011 to September 2012, we recruited 80 children (ages 3 to 16 y) with paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and/or recurrent tonsillitis. Patients were randomly assigned to receive QMRT (N = 40) or BDT (N = 40). The operating time and blood loss during surgery were evaluated. During the first postoperative week, the patients' parents completed a questionnaire to evaluate bleeding, ear and neck pain, nausea, vomiting, inter…
Constructivism in Science Education: The Need for a Clear Line of Demarcation
2003
Some voices have recently begun to question the constructivist positions, which have been considered the most important contribution of the last decades in science education. It could be thought then, that the“constructivist consensus” might just be a new fashion that would once again lead us back to the immovable reception model of science learning. This questions, at the same time, the idea of an advance in the field of science education towards the construction of a coherent body of knowledge.
Die Transilluminationstechnik
1996
The technique of light-guided intubation is based on the principle that a source of light brought into the trachea results in clearly visible and defined transcutaneous illumination, while no illumination can be observed with the light source in the oesophagus (Fig. 1-7). The Trachlight is a reintroduced instrument for this alternative intubation technique. The essential developments are: a length-adjustable stylet with a removable internal metal wire, a brighter light source, a stable handle with tight fixation of the endotracheal tube, and a time-dependent warning device to avoid extended intubations. One hundred twenty patients (Mallampati I. ASA I-III) were included in the study (conven…

Effects of adenotonsillectomy on neurocognitive and behavioural function in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
2018
Effects of adenotonsillectomy on neurocognitive and behavioural function in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Objectives: Aim of this study is to verify the presence of neurocognitive, neurobehavioral or sleep disturbances in children affected by adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and verify their improvement after Adeno-Tonsillectomy (AT). Methods: Eighty children suffering from adenotonsillar hypertrophy and OSAS were recruited for AT in the ENT Department of the University of Palermo. All the children underwent clinical evaluation, including rhinofibroscopy for grading the obstruction due to the adenotonsillar hypertrophy (before and 6 …
The fine structural organization of sternal glands of pseudergates and workers in termites (Isoptera): a comparative survey
2008
1873-5495 (Electronic) Comparative Study Journal Article; Thirty-nine species belonging to different families of termites are studied to give a comprehensive view of the evolution of the sternal glands. Several modifications occurring at cuticular and cytological levels are described in neuter castes. The outer epicuticle is always pierced by epicuticular pores. In advanced termites the epicuticular filaments greatly increase in number and length creating a thick layer. The pore canals gradually enlarge while the cuticle changes into a lattice structure lining an extracellular space in which the secretion is stored. Two classes of cells are present in basal termites (Mastotermitidae, Hodote…
