Modeling the energy and environmental life cycle of buildings: A co-simulation approach

2017

Abstract Building simulation is currently looking towards interdisciplinary experiences, aiming to the integration of simulation tools in different technical domains. At the same time, the interest of the building community to high performance buildings has also strengthened the interest on Life Cycle performances of such buildings, due to the reduction in their operational stage impacts. In this context, the paper proposes an integration of building simulation and Life Cycle Assessment through the programming of a TRNSYS component. It can perform Life Cycle Assessment studies, while having as output as well energy balances and energy and environmental payback times. Currently, the tool is …

Principles of scatter search

2006

Scatter search is an evolutionary method that has been successfully applied to hard optimization problems. The fundamental concepts and principles of the method were first proposed in the 1970s, based on formulations dating back to the 1960s for combining decision rules and problem constraints. In contrast to other evolutionary methods like genetic algorithms, scatter search is founded on the premise that systematic designs and methods for creating new solutions afford significant benefits beyond those derived from recourse to randomization. It uses strategies for search diversification and intensification that have proved effective in a variety of optimization problems. This paper provides…

Semiparametric stochastic frontier models: A generalized additive model approach

2017

Abstract The choice of the functional form of the frontier into a stochastic frontier model is typically neglected in applications and canonical functions are usually considered. This paper introduces a semiparametric approach for stochastic frontier estimation that extends previous works based on pseudo-likelihood estimators allowing flexibility in model selection and capability of imposing monotonicity and concavity constraints. For these purposes the present work introduces a generalized additive framework that moreover permits to model the influence of contextual/environmental factors to the hypothesized production process by the relative extension given by generalized additive models f…

Elevation Cable Modeling for Interactive Simulation of Cranes

2008

In this paper, the way to simulate hoisting cables in real time is addressed. We overcome instability in such simulation by considering a two-layered model: a model for the dynamics of a cable passing through a set of pulleys and an oscillation model based on the classical one-dimensional wave equation. The first layer considers the interaction between the cable and pulleys with the elevation equipment, while the second layer simulates cable oscillation. Numerical instability is avoided by suspending the oscillation layer when required. Due to the system properties, this can be carried out in such a way that does not cause significant loss in the system quality. It considers the oscillation…

A stochastic approach for self-healing capability evaluation in active islanded AC/DC hybrid microgrids

2023

This paper aims to implement a resilience assessment in AC/DC hybrid microgrids using a stochastic simulation approach. Self-healing measures including load shedding, control of distributed generation and flexible devices, like Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and Electrical Vehicles (EVs), are simulated to enable AC/DC hybrid microgrids to supply critical loads in islanded mode, assuming a disconnection of these microgrids from the main AC grid due to a fault. To perform this analysis, a two-stage process is proposed: first, a Monte-Carlo simulation-based stochastic approach is adopted to generate samples to simulate intermittent loads, power generation from Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), an…

Using microtomography, image analysis and flow simulations to characterize soil surface seals

2012

Raindrops that impact on soil surface affect the pore structure and form compact soil surface seals. Damaged pore structure reduces water infiltration which can lead to increased soil erosion. We introduce here methods to characterize the properties of surface seals in a detailed manner. These methods include rainfall simulations, x-ray microtomography, image analysis and pore-scale flow simulations. Methods were tested using clay soil samples, and the results indicate that the sealing process changes several properties of the pore structure.

Metamodel Specialization for DSL Tool Building

2016

Most of domain-specific tool building and especially diagram editor building nowadays involves some usage of metamodels. However normally the metamodel alone is not sufficient to define an editor. Frequently the metamodel just defines the abstract syntax of the domain, mappings or transformations are required to define the editor. Another approach [8] is based on a fixed type metamodel, there an editor definition consists of an instance of this metamodel to be executed by an engine. However there typically a number of functionality extensions in a transformation language is required. The paper offers a new approach based on metamodel specialization. First the metamodel specialization based …

An EKF Based Method for Path Following in Turbulent Air

2017

An innovative use of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is proposed to perform both accurate path following and adequate disturbance rejection in turbulent air. The tuned up procedure employs simultaneously two different EKF: the first one estimates gust disturbances, the second one estimates modified aircraft parameters. The first filter, by using measurements gathered in turbulent air, estimates both aircraft states and wind components. The second one, by using the estimated disturbances, obtains command laws that are able to reject disturbances. The predictor of the second EKF uses the estimated wind components to solve motion equations in turbulent air. Besides a set of unknown stability …
