An insight into the functionalisation of carbon nanotubes by diazonium chemistry: Towards a controlled decoration

2014

The derivatisation of materials including iron, gold, and carbon by addition of diazonium salts is a reliable process to tune their interfacial interaction with the surrounding media. In this regard, the functionalisation of carbon nanostructures by diazonium chemistry is a versatile strategy to obtain soluble nanomaterials with degrees of functionalisation among the highest ever reported. Starting from these premises we have studied the functionalisation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes by addition of the aryl diazonium salts generated in situ by treatment of 4-methoxyaniline with isopentylnitrite. Following a thorough purification and characterisation protocol (UV-vis, TGA, ATR-IR, cyclic…

Electrical conductance of carbon nanotubes with misaligned ends

2013

During a manufacturing process, when a straight carbon nanotube is placed on a substrate, e.g., production of transistors, its two ends are often misaligned. In this study, we investigate the effects of multiwall carbon nanotubes’ (MWCNTs) outer diameter and chirality on the change in conductance due to misalignment of the two ends. The length of the studied MWCNTs was 120 nm, while the diameters ranged between 4 and 7 nm. A mixed finite element-tight-binding approach was carefully designed to realize reduction in computational time by orders of magnitude in calculating the deformation-induced changes in the electrical transport properties of the nanotubes. Numerical results suggest that ar…

Carbon nanotubes under electron irradiation: Stability of the tubes and their action as pipes for atom transport

2005

The production and migration of carbon interstitials in carbon nanotubes under electron irradiation is studied experimentally and theoretically. It is shown that the threshold for displacing carbon atoms and the defect production rate strongly depend on the diameter of the nanotubes. Multiwalled nanotubes shrink by a loss of atoms and by diffusion of interstitials through the inner hollow in the axial direction. Thus, experimental evidence is given that nanotubes can act as nanoscale pipes for the transport of atoms.

Graphene, Fullerenes, Carbon Nanotubes: Electronic Subsystem

2017

This chapter introduces the reader to the analysis of the structural and electronic system properties of various carbon allotropes (CNT, graphene) and several molecular derivatives. The genesis of the electronic system formation is investigated in detail. Non-regular defected nanocarbon systems are considered for possible applications in different fields, including energy storage; chemical, biochemical and electrochemical sensing; water purification; and catalysis.

DFT studies on armchair (5, 5) SWCNT functionalization. Modification of selected structural and spectroscopic parameters upon two-atom molecule attac…

2015

Abstract Density functional theory (DFT) studies on adsorption of several gaseous homo- and hetero-diatomic molecules (AB) including H2, O2, N2, NO and CO on external surface of H-capped pristine armchair (5, 5) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) were conducted. Structures of C70H10 and the corresponding C70H10–AB adducts were fully optimized at the B3LYP/6-311G* level of theory. Calculated HOMO/LUMO energy gaps (Eg), 13C NMR chemical shifts and IR/Raman parameters were analyzed and critically compared with available experimental data. Significant changes of carbon NMR atom chemical shifts (up to −100 ppm) and shielding anisotropies (up to −180 ppm) at sites of addition were observed. Fu…

Surfactant-Dependent Exciton Mobility in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Studied by Single-Molecule Reactions

2010

Measurements of stepwise photoluminescence quenching in individual, (n,m)-selected single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) undergoing chemical reaction have been analyzed to deduce mobilities of optically generated excitons. For (7,5) nanotubes, the mean exciton range varies between approximately 140 and 240 nm for different surfactant coatings and correlates weakly with nanotube PL intensity. The results are consistent with a model of localized SWCNT excitons having substantial diffusional mobility along the nanotube axis.

Hierarchical Assembly of TiO2 Nanoparticles on WS2 Nanotubes Achieved Through Multifunctional Polymeric Ligands

2007

Thefunctionalization of nanotubes is required in order to bene-fit from their outstanding properties, as any application inmaterials and devices is hindered by processing and manipu-lation difficulties. Only the attachment of appropriate chem-ical functionalities on the nanotube surface allows tailoringof the properties for the respective applications. As an ex-ample, the enhancement of the nanotube solubility is onemajor task since most pristine nanotubes are insoluble inboth water and organic solvents. Thus, the improvement ofthe solubility by chemical functionalization is an importantconcept for synthetic chemists and materials scientists. Tai-loring of the surface chemical bonds might a…

In situ nucleation of carbon nanotubes by the injection of carbon atoms into metal particles.

2007

The synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of desired chiralities and diameters is one of the most important challenges in nanotube science and achieving such selectivity may require a detailed understanding of their growth mechanism. We report the formation of CNTs in an entirely condensed phase process that allows us, for the first time, to monitor the nucleation of a nanotube on the spherical surface of a metal particle. When multiwalled CNTs containing metal particle cores are irradiated with an electron beam, carbon from graphitic shells surrounding the metal particles is ingested into the body of the particle and subsequently emerges as single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) or multiwalled nan…

Quantum Transport and Current Distribution at Radio Frequency in Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes

2012

Multiwall carbon nanotubes represent a low-dimensional material that could serve as building blocks for future carbon-based nanoelectronics. The understanding of the electromagnetic performances at radio frequency of these materials for use in nanointerconnects is strictly related to the analysis of their transport properties as function of the working conditions. In this paper, we present an explicit expression of the conducting channels as function of diameter, temperature, doping, and supply voltage for both metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes. The proposed formula is based on the Dirac cone approximation of the conducting band energy of graphene nearby the Fermi points, combine…

Dependence of Exciton Mobility on Structure in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

2010

Optically generated excitons in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) display substantial diffusional mobility. This property allows excitons to encounter ∼104 carbon atoms during their lifetime and accounts for their efficient deactivation by sparse quenching sites. We report here experimental determinations of the mobilities of optically generated excitons in 10 different (n,m) species of semiconducting SWCNTs. Exciton diffusional ranges were deduced from measurements of stepwise photoluminescence quenching in selected individual SWCNTs coated with sodium deoxycholate surfactant and immobilized in agarose gel. A refined data analysis method deduced mean exciton ranges fro…
