Quark mass dependence of s-wave baryon resonances

We study the quark mass dependence of $J^P = \frac12^-$ s-wave baryon resonances. Parameter free results are obtained in terms of the leading order chiral Lagrangian. In the 'heavy' SU(3) limit with $m_\pi =m_K \simeq $ 500 MeV the resonances turn into bound states forming two octets plus a singlet representations of the SU(3) group. A contrasted result is obtained in the 'light' SU(3) limit with $m_\pi =m_K \simeq $ 140 MeV for which no resonances exist. Using physical quark masses our analysis suggests to assign to the $S=-2$ resonances $\Xi(1690)$ and $\Xi(1620)$ the quantum numbers $J^P=1/2^-$.

A new measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on a transversely polarised deuteron target

New high precision measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2003 and 2004 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. Both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be compatible with zero, within the present statistical errors, which are more than a factor of 2 smaller than those of the published COMPASS results from the 2002 data. The final results from the 2002, 2003 and 2004 runs are compared with naive expectations and with existing model calculations.

Photochemistry of 3,6-bis(styryl)pyridazines in solution and in neat liquid crystalline phase—optical switching and imaging techniques

Abstract 3,6-Bis(styryl)pyridazines 1a – f with 2–6 alkoxy groups show on irradiation in solution a stereoisomerization which leads to a photostationary state of ( E , E )- and ( E , Z )-isomer. Sensitizing and quenching experiments reveal that the ( E , E )→( E , Z ) route is a pure triplet process, whereas the ( E , Z )→( E , E ) route can have a minor singlet by-reaction. Hexyloxy or dodecyloxy chains on the terminal benzene rings convey the ( E , E )-isomers of compounds 1a , b , d – f thermotropic liquid crystalline properties. Luminescence of coesite

Coesite is a polymorph modification of crystalline silicon dioxide with a tetrahedral structure. The luminescence of a single crystal of synthetic coesite was studied under excitation using x-rays, an electron beam, and excimer lasers KrF (248 nm), ArF (193 nm) and F2 (157 nm). Luminescence bands in the regions of 2.5 eV and 4.4 eV appear. The blue band is dependent on temperature and is composed of decay kinetics. Three main decay times are revealed, exhibiting luminescence of a different nature in the same range of the spectrum. One is in the ns range of time with a time constant of about 2 ns. Displacement Defect Formation in Complex Oxide Crystals under Irradiation

The work is devoted to an analysis of formation processes of the radiation displacement defects (RDDs) and colour centres (CCs) in complex oxide crystals under irradiation. The calculation results on: the displacement process simulation as well as an analysis of the RDD and CC accumulation kinetics are presented. New experimental results on additional absorption spectra induced by neutron irradiation of LiNbO(3) (LNO) crystals doped with Fe and Cr and YAlO(3) (YAP) crystals doped with Nd and Er as well are presented. Genome-wide significant association of ANKRD55 rs6859219 and multiple sclerosis risk.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a genetically complex disease that shares a substantial proportion of risk loci with other autoimmune diseases.1 Along these lines, ANKRD55 , originally implicated in rheumatoid arthritis, was recently reported as a potential novel MS risk gene (rs6859219, p=1.9×10−7).2 Here, we comprehensively validated this effect in independent datasets comprising 8846 newly genotyped subjects from Germany and France as well as 5003 subjects from two genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Unraveling the kinetics and molecular mechanism of gas phase pyrolysis of cubane to [8]annulene

The kinetic and electron density flows are studied theoretically for the gas phase pyrolysis of cubane via its cage opening to reach bicyclooctatriene and then thermal rearrangement of bicyclooctatriene to produce [8]annulene which is the experimentally observed major product. The observed kinetic data at the MN15-L/maug-cc-pVTZ level of theory were in good agreement with the experimental results as compared to the CBS-QB3 method. The cage opening and the thermal rearrangement steps at the experimentally employed temperature of 520 K were exergonic and exothermic. Estimating Terrestrial Neutron-Induced SEB Cross-Sections and FIT Rates for High-Voltage SiC Power MOSFETs

Cross sections and failure in time rates for neutron-induced single-event burnout (SEB) are estimated for SiC power MOSFETs using a method based on combining results from heavy ion SEB experimental data, 3-D TCAD prediction of sensitive volumes, and Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations of secondary particle production. The results agree well with experimental data and are useful in understanding the mechanisms for neutron-induced SEB data.

Characterization of LiF and CaF2 surfaces using MIES and UPS (HeI)

Metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES) and UPS (HeI) in combination with ab initio calculations (CRYSTALcode) were applied to study surface and bulk defects in LiF and CaF2. The investigated stoichiometric, defective and doped surfaces are LiF, LiF doped with Mg, and CaF2. The experimental information obtained on the electronic structure of stoichiometric and defective surfaces of LiF (100), LiF on W (110) and CaF2 (111) is discussed on the basis of the ab initio calculations.
