Lymphoproliferative disorders in Sotos syndrome: Observation of two cases

Sotos syndrome is included among the overgrowth disorders, most of which have an increased risk of neoplasms. Sotos syndrome does not appear to be related to a specific tumor type, but rather to the development of solid tumors of ectodermal or mesodermal origin in general. We report on two Sotos syndrome patients who developed a non-Hodgkin lymphoma and an acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, respectively. Our experience suggests that there may exist a high frequency of lymphoproliferative disorders in Sotos syndrome, and points out the importance of a long-term follow-up of Sotos syndrome patients, to detect a possible neoplastic evolution. ©1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

t a d With approximately 75% of all skin cancer-related deaths, malignant melanoma (MM) is the most lethal among common skin cancers, mostly because of its disposition to early lymphogenic and hematogenic metastasis. If a MM is diagnosed early, the overall prognosis is excellent, but once metastasized it becomes an incurable disease with high mortality. Prognosis is dependent on parameters such as gender, anatomic location, level of invasion, thickness, type of primary tumor, ulceration, and number and status of regional lymphatic nodes. Fractal analyses reveal independent complexity and predictability of gait

Locomotion is a natural task that has been assessed since decades and used as a proxy to highlight impairments of various origins. Most studies adopted classical linear analyses of spatio-temporal gait parameters. Here, we use more advanced, yet not less practical, non-linear techniques to analyse gait time series of healthy subjects. We aimed at finding more sensitive indexes related to spatio-temporal gait parameters than those previously used, with the hope to better identify abnormal locomotion. The first published account of a neurosurgical intervention performed on the North American continent is described. The operation took place in Mexico City in 1561. The neurosurgical intervention was performed by a Spanish surgeon, Pedro Arias de Benavides, on a 13-year-old boy who had sustained head trauma that caused an open depressed cranial fracture and exposed the cerebrum. A description of this case was first published in Valladolid, Spain, 6 years after the event, in a book entitled Secretos de Chirurgia ("Secrets of Surgery").

A Lack of Sexual Dimorphism in Width-to-Height Ratio in White European Faces Using 2D Photographs, 3D Scans, and Anthropometry

Facial width-to-height ratio has received a great deal of attention in recent research. Evidence from human skulls suggests\ud that males have a larger relative facial width than females, and that this sexual dimorphism is an honest signal of\ud masculinity, aggression, and related traits. However, evidence that this measure is sexually dimorphic in faces, rather than\ud skulls, is surprisingly weak. We therefore investigated facial width-to-height ratio in three White European samples using\ud three different methods of measurement: 2D photographs, 3D scans, and anthropometry. A historical case of beaten-copper cranium

2007

The authors present the oldest historical case of a so-called beaten-copper cranium. The typical pattern was identified on a skull from a child, probably a boy, who died at approximately 6 years of age and was buried in a provisional cemetery used during the siege of Hanau, Germany, in 1635 and 1636. Morphological and radiological analyses of the severe digitate impressions ubiquitous on the child's endocranium support the diagnosis of chronically elevated intracranial pressure due to hydrocephalus.

There are few studies in the literature with which to histologically evaluate whether or not the adipose tissue graft is really a safe option to achieve bone repair.
