Implementation of analytic gradients for CCSD and EOM-CCSD using Cholesky decomposition of the electron-repulsion integrals and their derivatives: Th…

2019

We present a general formulation of analytic nuclear gradients for the coupled-cluster with single and double substitution (CCSD) and equation-of-motion (EOM) CCSD energies computed using Cholesky decomposition (CD) representations of the electron repulsion integrals. By rewriting the correlated energy and response equations such that the storage of the largest four-index intermediates is eliminated, CD leads to a significant reduction in disk storage requirements, reduced I/O penalties, and an improved parallel performance. CD thus extends the scope of the systems that can be treated by (EOM-)CCSD methods, although analytic gradients in the framework of CD are needed to extend the applicab…

Magnetic skyrmions: from fundamental to applications

2016

In this topical review, we will discuss recent advances in the field of skyrmionics (fundamental and applied aspects) mainly focusing on skyrmions that can be realized in thin film structures where an ultrathin ferromagnetic layer (<1 nm) is coupled to materials with large spin-orbit coupling. We review the basic topological nature of the skyrmion spin structure that can entail a stabilization due to the chiral exchange interaction present in many multilayer systems with structural inversion asymmetry. The static spin structures and the dynamics of the skyrmions are also discussed. In particular, we show that skyrmions can be displaced with high reliability and efficiency as needed for t…

Skyrmion Dynamics – from thermal diffusion to ultra-fast motion

2018

Summary form only given. Spintronics promises to be a paradigm shift from using the charge degree of freedom to using the spin degree of freedom. To this end three key requirements are: (i) stable spin structures for long term data retention; (ii) efficient spin manipulation for low power devices and (iii) ideally no susceptibility to stray fields as realized for antiferromagnets. We explore different materials classes to tackle these challenges and explore the science necessary for a disruptive new technology. To obtain ultimate stability, topological spin structures that emerge due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), such as chiral domain walls and skyrmions are used. These po…

The ratio of primary scattering to total scattering of sky radiance

1974

Recently Eschelbach has computed from theory spectral radiance values for a turbid atmosphere taking into account the effect of multiple scattering. In the present work these computational data were used to investigate the ratio of primary to total scattering. This quotient is a measure of multiple scattering because of the relation: Total Scattering (TS) is equal to Primary Scattering (PS) plus Multiple Scattering (MS), i.e. PS/TS = 100 - MS/TS (%). It is discussed in which way multiple scattering in the solar almucantar depends on the solar elevation, turbidity, scattering angle, wavelength and albedo. The present work shows in which way multiple scattering is related to the optical thick…

Calculations and measurements of the spectral radiance of the solar aureole

1968

The application of the theory of primary scattering to describe and interpret the spectral distribution of the sky radiance is discussed. It is shown that within the solar aureole the influence of the scattering of higher order can be neglected. Theoretical calculations of the spectral distribution of the sky radiance, carried out by Bullrich et al . (1965) based on an exponential aerosol size distribution with an upper limiting particle radius r = 10 ?, have been extended to r = 150 ?. The detailed study of the influence of these “giant” particles revealed that aerosol particles of r >30 ? have no effect on the sky radiation any more. Representative measurements taken at Mainz, Germany, at…

A fast approximate method for the calculation of the infrared radiation balance within city street cavities

1983

The approximate calculation method for diffuse solar irradiances in street cavities presented in an earlier paper is extended to include infrared flux densities. By expanding the infrared sky radiance as a truncated trigonometric series, it becomes possible to solve the integrals representing the obstruction of the sky analytically. An example is worked out to demonstrate the numerically very efficient calculation procedure.

Imaging strong blazars with space VLBI

2020

Abstract The RadioAstron mission has obtained a series of detailed multi-frequency images of the brightest blazars of the radio sky concentrated in three key science programs. We present here results of the program on powerful jets in blazars. In the first two years of the mission, observations of compact relativistic jets in 0836+710, 3C 345, 3C 273, and 4C +69.21 were made at λ λ  18, 6, and 1.3 cm. The resulting images have revealed compact emitting regions with brightness temperature in excess of 10 13  K and a complex jet structure that can be explained by plasma instability developing in a relativistic outflow. We present here some highlights of these space-VLBI observations, designed…

Accurate ab initio density fitting for multiconfigurational self-consistent field methods

2008

Using Cholesky decomposition and density fitting to approximate the electron repulsion integrals, an implementation of the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method suitable for large-scale applications is presented. Sample calculations on benzene, diaquo-tetra- μ -acetato-dicopper(II), and diuraniumendofullerene demonstrate that the Cholesky and density fitting approximations allow larger basis sets and larger systems to be treated at the CASSCF level of theory with controllable accuracy. While strict error control is an inherent property of the Cholesky approximation, errors arising from the density fitting approach are managed by using a recently proposed class of auxi…

Messungen der Himmelsstrahlung und deren Polarisationsgrad während der Sonnenfinsternis am 15.2.1961 in Viareggio (Italien)

1961

On the occasion of the total solar eclipse in Viareggio (Italy) measurements of intensity of sky radiation and polarization have been carried out at 90 degrees vertical distance from the sun. UV-, green- and red-filters have been used. The results showed a diminution of the intensity during the eclipse of about 3 powers of ten. The sky brightness in the point 90 degrees distant during the total eclipse was similar to the brightness when sun is 7 degrees below the horizon. About one minute before the total eclipse the degree of polarization diminuished to zero. — Furthermore photos of nearly the total sky were made using two cameras with wide angle lenses.

The MEGA Project for Medium Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy

2006

The Medium Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy (MEGA) telescope concept will soon be proposed as a MIDEX mission. This mission would enable a sensitive all-sky survey of the medium-energy gamma-ray sky (0.4–50 MeV) and bridge the huge sensitivity gap between the COMPTEL and OSSE experiments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and the visionary Advanced Compton Telescope (ACT) mission. The scientific goals include compiling a much larger catalog of sources in this energy range, performing far deeper searches for supernovae, better measuring the galactic continuum and line emissions, and identifying the components of the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray emission. MEGA records and images gamma rays by complet…
