Burden of Comorbidities in Patients with OSAS and COPD-OSAS Overlap Syndrome
2021
Background and Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are usually associated with multi-morbidity. The aim of this study was to retrospectively investigate the prevalence of comorbidities in a cohort of patients with OSAS and COPD-OSAS overlap syndrome (OS) patients and to explore differences between these two groups. Materials and Methods: Included were consecutive OS patients and OSAS patients who had been referred to our sleep laboratory, and were matched in terms of sex, age, BMI, and smoking history. Presence of comorbidities was recorded based on their medical history and after clinical and laboratory examination. Results: …
LightSleepNet: A Lightweight Deep Model for Rapid Sleep Stage Classification with Spectrograms.
2021
Deep learning has achieved unprecedented success in sleep stage classification tasks, which starts to pave the way for potential real-world applications. However, due to its enormous size, deployment of deep neural networks is hindered by high cost at various aspects, such as computation power, storage, network bandwidth, power consumption, and hardware complexity. For further practical applications (e.g., wearable sleep monitoring devices), there is a need for simple and compact models. In this paper, we propose a lightweight model, namely LightSleepNet, for rapid sleep stage classification based on spectrograms. Our model is assembled by a much fewer number of model parameters compared to…
Sporadic and Familial Variants in NF1: An Explanation of the Wide Variability in Neurocognitive Phenotype?
2020
Background: Cognitive impairment is the most common neurological manifestation in NF1 and occurs in 30-70% of NF1 cases. The onset and severity of each specific cognitive deficit varies greatly from child to child, with no apparent external causes. The wide variability of phenotype is the most complex aspect in terms of management and care. Despite multiple research, the mechanism underlying the high heterogeneity in NF1 has not yet been elucidated. While many studies have focused on the effects of specific and precise genetic mutations on the NF1 phenotype, little has been done on the impact of NF1 transmission (sporadic vs. familial cases). We used a complete neuropsychological evaluation…
Dreams and Trauma Changes in the Manifest Dreams in Psychoanalytic Treatments - A Psychoanalytic Outcome Measure.
2021
Although psychoanalysts are interested in symptom reduction as an outcome, they are looking for instruments to measure sustaining changes in the unconscious mental functioning. In this article it is discussed that conceptually well-founded transformation of manifest dreams analyzed with precise empirical methods could be considered as a promising indicator for such therapeutic changes. We are summarizing a dream generation model by Moser and von Zeppelin which has integrated a large interdisciplinary knowledge base of contemporary dream and sleep research. Based on this model the authors have developed a valid and reliable coding system for analyzing manifest dreams, the Zurich Dream Proces…
The role of expert evaluation for microsleep detection
2015
Abstract Recently, it has been shown by overnight driving simulation studies that microsleep density is the only known sleepiness indicator which rapidly increases within a few seconds immediately before sleepiness related crashes. This indicator is based solely on EEG and EOG and subsequent adaptive pattern recognition. Accurate microsleep recognition is very important for the performance of this sleepiness indicator. The question is whether expensive evaluations of microsleep events by a) experts are necessary or b) non-experts provide sufficient evaluations. Based on 11,114 microsleep events in case a) and 12,787 in case b) recognition accuracies were investigated utilizing (i) artificia…
Sleep Induction by Intranasal Application of Melatonin
1981
The sleep inducing potency of melatonin was tested in a double-blind study against placebo. The application form was a nasal spray with a 0.85% solution of melatonin in ethanol. 70% of the subjects fell asleep after treatment with the hormone.
Prevalence and associations of injury and illness among high school elite sport-students in the south of Norway
2018
Master's thesis Sports Science ME517 - University of Agder 2018 Introduction Youth participating in sports are often associated with a healthy lifestyle, however illness and injuries are frequently reported in sports. The aims for this master thesis were; (1) to examine the prevalence of sport injuries and illnesses among elite sport students at high school with regard to sport group and (2) to examine anthropometry, bone health, performance variables, energy availability and sleep time with associations to sport injuries and illness prevalence in the same sample. Methods Thirty-six high school elite sport students, endurance athletes (n=24) and ball game athletes (n=12) [age: 16.3±0.2 year…
