Development of an aerobic digestion model for the assessment of greenhouse gases production (AeDMG1): Calibration and validation

2015

The increasing interest in greenhouse gas emissions from WWTPs has been leading to new tools for their designing and managing. The activated sludge models have been modified in order to consider on – site emissions from nitrification and denitrification, in particular. The biological nitrogen removal processes have been mainly assessing due to nitrous oxide (N2O) production as intermediate. The IPCC suggests that N2O contributes to climate change because it has a global warming potential 298-fold stronger than carbon dioxide. Even if the mathematical modelling is wide regarding the activated sludge models for greenhouse gases, a model for aerobic digestion is still not available. In this pa…

Biosorption of Cr(III) from Aqueous Solution by Activated Sludge

2016

The biosorption of Cr(III) from aqueous solution using activated sludge (AS) microorganisms was investigated under various experimental conditions regarding pH and temperature. Biosorption equilibrium parameters were determined based on the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model. The kinetic parameters were established using the equations of pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Moreover thermodynamic parameters have been calculated. Langmuir isotherm provided a better fit to the equilibrium data. The maximum experimentally determined sorption capacity 26.95 mg g–1 obtained at 25o C and pH 5.0. The kinetics model of pseudo-second order row has been better describing experimental data.…

Ultrasound assisted method to increase soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) of sewage sludge for digestion

2004

The aim of this study was to clarify the possibilities to increase the amount of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and methane production of sludge using ultrasound technologies with and without oxidising agents. The study was done using multivariate data analyses. The most important factors affected were discovered. Ultrasonically assisted disintegration increased clearly the amount of SCOD of sludge. Also more methane was produced from treated sludge in anaerobic batch assays compared to the sludge with no ultrasonic treatment. Multivariate data analysis showed that ultrasonic power, dry solid content of sludge (DS), sludge temperature and ultrasonic treatment time have the most signi…

Disintegration of Wastewater Activated Sludge (WAS) for Improved Biogas Production

2018

Due to rapid urbanization, the number of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) has increased, and so has the associated waste generated by them. Sustainable management of this waste can lead to the creation of energy-rich biogas via fermentation processes. This review presents recent advances in the anaerobic digestion processes that have led to greater biogas production. Disintegration techniques for enhancing the fermentation of waste activated sludge can be apportioned into biological, physical and chemical means, which are included in this review; they were mainly compared and contrasted in terms of the ensuing biogas yield. It was found that ultrasonic- and microwave-assisted disintegrati…

Environmental assessment of the Sibiu County, Romania: proposal for sewage sludge and OFMSW management

2017

The aim of the work is to assess current solid waste management (SWM) and wastewater treatment (WWT) in the county of Sibiu, Romania. Sibiu is a region where industrialization and tourism are spreading constantly, while pollution monitoring and the introduction of circular economy (CE) principles are still lacking. The environmental issues are mostly due to the absence of reliable sanitation systems, in particular for what concerns sewage sludge treatment. Moreover, Organic fraction from selective collection of municipal solid waste is still missing, since it is disposed of directly to landfill, increasing environmental pollution and contributing considerably to global warming. As a result,…

Aerobic composting and anaerobic digestion of pulp and paper mill sludges

1997

The feasibility of aerobic vessel composting and anaerobic digestion for the treatment of pulp and paper mill sludges were studied. The composting studies made use of primary and secondary sludge from a de-inking and paper mill. In six parallely aerated 500 1 vessels with various carbon : nitrogen (C:N) -ratios, the most optimal performance was obtained with C:N -ratios of c. 22–35, while higher and lower ratios delayed the temperature increase. With the optimal ratios, the thermophilic stage was reached within 36 h, and the stage lasted for about seven days. In the scale-up study (18 m3 compost vessel), the thermophilic stage was reached within 24 h. An effective dehydratation of the mass …

Influence of the Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic (OSA) Process on Methane Production by Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge

2023

The present study evaluated different sludge-reduction mechanisms in the oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process in terms of their effects on methane productivity by anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. Two different layouts were investigated for the sludge return from an anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) to the anoxic (scheme A) or the aerobic (scheme B) reactor of a pre-denitrification plant. Biochemical methane-potential (BMP) assays performed on the excess sludge revealed that scheme A promoted an overall increase of methane production in the OSA (20 mLCH4 gVSS−1d−1, +19%), although compared with a control CAS plant a significant decrease in the excess sludge production (3…

Identification and quantification of microbial populations in activated sludge and anaerobic digestion processes

2014

Eight different phenotypes were studied in an activated sludge process (AeR) and anaerobic digester AnD) in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant by means of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and automated FISH quantification software. The phenotypes were ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAO), glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAO), sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), methanotrophic bacteria and methanogenic archaea. Some findings were unexpected: (a) Presence of PAO, GAO and denitrifiers in the AeR possibly due to unexpected environmental conditions caused by oxygen deficiencies or its ability to survive …
