Hierarchically Structured Titania Films Prepared by Polymer/Colloidal Templating
2010
Hierarchically structured titania films for application in hybrid solar cells are prepared by combining microsphere templating and sol-gel chemistry with an amphiphilic diblock copolymer as a structure-directing agent. The films have a functional structure on three size scales: (1) on the micrometer scale a holelike structure for reduction of light reflection, (2) on an intermediate scale macropores for surface roughening and improved infiltration of a hole transport material, and (3) on a nanometer scale a mesoporous structure for charge generation. Poly(dimethyl siloxane)-block-methyl methacrylate poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMS-b-MA(PEO)) is used as a structure-directing agent for the prepara…
Critical micellization density: A small-angle-scattering structural study of the monomer-aggregate transition of block copolymers in supercriticalCO2
2000
In this paper we report a small-angle neutron-scattering investigation of micelle formation by the fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon block copolymer, polyvinyl acetate-b-poly (1,1,2,2-tetrahydroperfluoro-octyl acrylate) in supercritical CO{sub 2} (scCO{sub 2}) at 313 K. At high pressure the copolymer is in a monomeric state with a random coil structure, while at low pressure the polymer forms spherical aggregates stable in a wide range of thermodynamic conditions. By profiling pressure, a sharp monomer-micelle transition is obtained due to the tuning of the solvating ability of scCO{sub 2}. We confirm the previous finding that this aggregate-monomer transition is driven by the gradual penetration of…

Fingerprinting white marbles of archaeometric interest by means of combined SANS and USANS
2007
We have performed a series of USANS and SANS measurements on a selected group of marble samples characterized by similar chemical composition but wide range of known metamorphic conditions. With these samples we start the building up of a data base in an attempt to correlate metamorphism and mesoscopic structure of white marbles. Experimental data have been analysed in terms of a hierarchical model. The present data highlight the importance of the structure at meso scale in identifying the provenance of the marble samples. A remarkable simple relation between the model parameters and the metamorphic degree has been found. This curve might represent a master curve to allow fingerprinting of …
MbCo in Saccharide Solid Amorphous Systems: A Combined FTIR and SAXS Study
2011
Saccharides, and in particular trehalose, are known for their efficiency in protecting biostructures against environmental stress [1], although the preservation mechanism is still debated. Experiments and simulations [2,3] on carboxy-myoglobin (MbCO) showed that the protein dynamics is highly inhibited in dry trehalose matrices, the inhibition being dependent on the water content. In these conditions, a mutual protein-matrix structural and dynamic influence is observed. Here we report a combined FTIR and SAXS study on MbCO embedded in dry amorphous matrices of trehalose and sucrose. FTIR measurements were performed at different protein/sugar ratios, focussing on the stretching band of the bo…
Interplay between the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction-diffusion system and biomimetic matrices
2007
Abstract Interactions between reaction–diffusion systems and restricted host environments are a subject of widespread interest. In this work the behaviour of the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction was investigated in lamellar phases formed by phospholipid bilayers with relevance for biological systems. The influence of the reactive medium on the structure of the lipid matrix and, in turn, the influence of the matrix on the dynamical evolution of chemical patterns, were studied by small angle scattering.
