The role of utility models in patent filing strategies: evidence from European countries

We examine the role of utility models (UM) in patent filing strategies. With an extensive patent family data from European countries, we explore the structures and characteristics of patent families, which include UMs. A simple typology of patent families with UM members is introduced. We document that the geographical scope of most patent families with UM members is purely national, which is in line with the conventional view that the UM mechanism covers technologically and economically marginal inventions. In the medieval cemetery of the Historic Site of San Juan del Hospital of Valencia is housed a small funeral chapel founded in the late thirteenth century by the knight Arnau de Romaní. Along its cornice there are a series of heads of animals and humans that are one of the few sculptural vestiges inserted into the Romanesque iconographic tradition that are preserved in the city. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a frequently utilized polymer for the fabrication of synthetic vascular grafts, was surface-modified by means of a wet-chemical process. The inherently non-cell-adhesive polymer does not support cellular attachment, a prerequisite for the endothelialization of luminal surface grafts in small diameter applications. To impart the material with cell-adhesive properties a treatment with sodium-naphthalene provided a basis for the subsequent immobilization of the adhesion promoting RGD-peptide using a hydroxy- and amine-reactive crosslinker. NADPH oxidases are major sources of superoxide in the vascular wall. This study investigates the role of protein kinase C (PKC) in regulating gene expression of NADPH oxidases. Treatment of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and HUVEC-derived EA.hy 926 endothelial cells with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) or phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate led to a PKC-dependent biphasic expression of the gp91phox homolog Nox4. A downregulation of Nox4 was observed at 6 h and an upregulation at 48 h after phorbol ester treatment. We present an equivalent midpoint locally uniformly rotund (MLUR) renorming $X$ of $C[0,1]$ on which every weakly compact projection $P$ satisfies the equation $\|I-P\| = 1+\|P\|$ ($I$ is the identity operator on $X$). As a consequence we obtain an MLUR space $X$ with the properties D2P, that every non-empty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball $B_X$ has diameter 2, and the LD2P+, that for every slice of $B_X$ and every norm 1 element $x$ inside the slice there is another element $y$ inside the slice of distance as close to 2 from $x$ as desired. An example of an MLUR space with the D2P, the LD2P+, and with convex combinations of slices of arbitrary small diameter is also given.

Affinity purification using the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of the human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA identified the cytosolic poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) as a protein interacting with the human iNOS 3'-UTR. Downregulation of PABP expression by RNA interference resulted in a marked reduction of cytokine-induced iNOS mRNA expression without changes in the expression of mRNAs coding for the major subunit of the RNA polymerase II (Pol 2A) or β2-microglobuline (β2M). Along with the mRNA also iNOS protein expression was reduced by siPABP-treatment, whereas in the same cells protein expression of STAT-1α, NF-κB p65, or GAPDH was not altered. W artykule przedstawiono proces kształtowania się ustroju II Rzeczpo-spolitej i pokładanych nadziei na zrównoważony rozwój kraju. Zarysowano tradycjępolskiego parlamentaryzmu i wskazano na jego odrębność względem parlamentary-zmów innych krajów europejskich. Do tradycji tej usiłowało nawiązać odradzające siępo zaborach państwo polskie, przystosowując ją do struktury prawnej nowożytnego państwa liberalno-demokratycznego. Wejście II Rzeczpospolitej do grona państw po-siadających liberalno-demokratyczną konstytucję nie oznaczało, automatycznego za warstwą prawną, przeniesienia struktury społecznej, ekonomicznej i mentalnej.
