Outdoor, indoor and personal distribution of BTEX in pregnant women from two areas in Spain - Preliminary results from the INMA project
2010
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are habitually found in both outdoor and indoor environments, may represent a significant health risk. In this context, pregnancy is a critical period since foetuses are more vulnerable than adults to exposure to toxic compounds. The objective of this study is to present the preliminary results of a series of measurements of outdoor (O), indoor (I) and personal exposure (P) to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene and m,p-xylene (BTEX) in 107 pregnant women from two areas in Spain, namely Valencia and Sabadell. BTEX samplers were installed for 48 hours both inside and outside of the women’s homes, along with personal samplers. In addition, the tes…
Effects of Atropine on Acetylcholine Overflow from Perfused Chicken Hearts
1978
Isolated chicken hearts were perfused (20 ml/min) with Tyrode’s solution. Release of acetylcholine (ACh) was evoked either by electrical stimulation (1 ms; 15 mA) of both preganglionic vagus nerves or by perfusion with dimethylphenylpiperazinium (DMPP). ACh was extracted from the perfusates by ion-pair extraction and determined by gas chromatography.
The role of Aurora-A inhibitors in cancer therapy
2007
Recently, new chemotherapy agents which target the non-structural components of mitosis have been developed. An important protein involved in several mitotic phases is the Aurora-A protein. By means of the phosphorylation of different substrates, Aurora-A regulates the correct development of the various phases of mitosis. The kinase activity of this protein makes Aurora-A an excellent candidate as an oncogene. The first data of Aurora-A involvement in cancer regarded the identification of Aurora-A overexpression in primary breast and colon tumour samples. With regard to the predictive role of Aurora-A, it has been shown that its overexpression disrupts the spindle checkpoint activated by pa…
Involvement of PAR-4 in Cannabinoid-Dependent Sensitization of Osteosarcoma Cells to TRAIL-Induced Apoptosis
2014
The synthetic cannabinoid WIN 55,212-2 is a potent cannabinoid receptor agonist with anticancer potential. Experiments were performed to determine the effects of WIN on proliferation, cell cycle distribution, and programmed cell death in human osteosarcoma MG63 and Saos-2 cells. Results show that WIN induced G2/M cell cycle arrest, which was associated with the induction of the main markers of ER stress (GRP78, CHOP and TRB3). In treated cells we also observed the conversion of the cytosolic form of the autophagosome marker LC3-I into LC3-II (the lipidated form located on the autophagosome membrane) and the enhanced incorporation of monodansylcadaverine and acridine orange, two markers of t…
A Comprehensive Spatiotemporal Framework for Hedonic Pricing: Integrating the Comparable Sales Approach and Minimizing Spatial Omitted Variable Bias
2019
This paper develops a theoretical and methodological framework that integrates Hedonic Pricing (HP), grid comparable sales approach (CSA), and nearest neighbors into a general spatiotemporal specification. By explicitly providing a theoretical justification for introducing spatial (or spatiotemporal) econometrics to HP, this approach is not only relevant to house price forecasting and automated valuation models (AVM) but also to valuing environmental goods capitalized in housing and to all other fields employing house pricing models. The resulting econometric CSA and spatiotemporal Durbin models provide higher prediction accuracy and reliability to alternatives by reducing the spatially-del…
Solution versus Fluorous versus Solid-Phase Synthesis of 2,5-Disubstituted 1,3-Azoles. Preliminary Antibacterial Activity Studies
2009
A small library of compounds with an oxa(thia)zole scaffold and structural diversity in both positions 2 and 5 has been synthesized. Double acylation of a protected glycine affords intermediate α-amido-β-ketoesters, which in turn can be dehydrated to afford 1,3-oxazoles or reacted with Lawesson’s reagent to furnish 1,3-thiazoles. This procedure was designed with its adaptation to fluorous techniques in mind. Thus, when a protected glycine with a fluorous tag in the ester moiety is used as a starting material, the synthesis can be easily completed without column chromatography purification of intermediate compounds with good to excellent yields, thus affording a suitable entry to the prepara…
Palvelukeskeisen arkkitehtuurin suunnittelumenetelmät
2009
Are Spanish SMEs good places to work?
2012
PurposeThis paper aims to perform a descriptive analysis of the current degree of development and application of work‐life balance policies in Spanish SMEs, examining the differences that arise due to ownership structure (family owned business versus non‐family owned business) and presenting an in‐depth analysis of the variables that influence managers' attitudes towards work‐life balance policies.Design/methodology/approachStructured interviews with SME managers were performed.FindingsThe presence of those polices is small, although the situation differs depending on the type of policy. Differences in ownership structure do not imply significantly different behavior with regard to the intr…
Structural and Static Prerequisites for the Internationalization of Small and Medium – Sized Enterprises in the Baltic States
2014
Abstract The pace and extent of internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is the result of the interaction of various factors and preconditions. This article examines one of these prerequisites - the currently established structure of SMEs in the Baltic States. The relationship between the different components of SMEs or the SMEs structure is the slowly varying parameters of the functioning of the economy. However, as an integral element of the economic system, the SME structure affects its development, including internationalization of business. Based on statistical data, the opportunities for small firms to outsource business activities as a perspective form of int…
Efficient Benzodithiophene/Benzothiadiazole-Based n-Channel Charge Transporters
2017
A series of donor–acceptor (D-A) small molecules based on electron-deficient benzothiadiazole (BTD) and electron-rich benzodithiophene (BDT) featuring an A-D-A structure is presented. Exhaustive spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational studies evidence their electroactive nature and their ability to form well-ordered thin films with broad visible absorptions and low band gaps (ca. 2 eV). Time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) studies unveil unexpected n-type charge transport displaying high electron mobilities around 0.1 cm2 V−1 s−1. Efficient electron transport properties are consistent with the low electron reorganization energies (0.11–0.17 eV) theoretically predicted.
