The Sustainable Energy Action Plan. A Sicilian case study
2012
The European Union, to reach the objective of the emission reduction, has introduced several projects, including the “Convenant of Mayors”, vo-luntary action aimed to involve the cities of the European Community in the process towards environmental and enrgetic sustainability. Over 2100 muni-cipalities in Europe have joined or are in the process of ratification, but for the 954 italians signatories, only four have drawn up the required tools. The case study "Lampedusa" (presented by the writer as a master's thesis CasaClima - speaker arch. Fattor S., Co-prof. Trombino) comes from the de-sire to measure, in a Sicilian reality, multidisci-disciplinary approaches to de-fine strategic planning …
Scheduling Domestic Shiftable Loads in Smart Grids: A Learning Automata-Based Scheme
2017
In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling shiftable loads, over multiple users, in smart grids. We approach the problem, which is becoming increasingly pertinent in our present energy-thirsty society, using a novel distributed game-theoretic framework. From a modeling perspective, the distributed scheduling problem is formulated as a game, and in particular, a so-called “Potential” game. This game has at least one pure strategy Nash Equilibrium (NE), and we demonstrate that the NE point is a global optimal point. The solution that we propose, which is the pioneering solution that incorporates the theory of Learning Automata (LA), permits the total supplied loads to approach the p…

PRIVACY-PRESERVING METERING AND LOAD CONTROL IN SMART GRID
In the last decade, electrical grids have experienced an impressive evolution towards the so called Smart Grids, inspired by the Internet model. Indeed, the main driver for this evolution is the exploitation of communication networks for enabling the integration of renewable energy sources and making the energy demand closer to the time-varying production. While witnessing to the incremental deployment of Smart Grids and novel services for Smart Grids, we note a growing awareness on the risks associated to the collection of many sensitive users data. For example, monitoring the temporal trace of the energy consumption data of a given residential customer, may reveal a lot of information on …
A Coexistence Analysis of Blockchain, SCADA Systems, and OpenADR for Energy Services Provision
2022
The advent of blockchain technology allows the raise of new business models for the electricity market, opening the way also to end-users and letting them offer regulation services to the power grid. Thanks to the characteristic of being distributed, the blockchain technology could be a solution to balancing problems caused by the penetration of renewable sources, implementing a platform for Demand-Response programs delivery. Demand-Response allows consumers to respond to market signals by increasing or reducing their energy consumption, contributing to greater flexibility and stability of the grid and to a more efficient use of infrastructures and energy resources. Currently, Demand-Respon…
High frequency modeling technique for three phase power electronics module
2015
Nowadays, the high integrated power electronics modules (PMs), characterized by high speed, low loss and hard ware miniaturization, represent a new technology that meets the emerging demands of many applications, such us vehicle and home appliance, renewable energy sources in smart grid. The integration process and the high switching speeds increase the PM electromagnetic emissions that can create electromagnetic interference (EMI) with electric/electronic devices near the PMs. For this reason, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) have to be carefully considered, yet in the design phase, to guarantee the reliability of PM systems. In this paper a method to develop a high frequency (HF) model…
Incremental heuristic approach for meter placement in radial distribution systems
2019
The evolution of modern power distribution systems into smart grids requires the development of dedicated state estimation (SE) algorithms for real-time identification of the overall system state variables. This paper proposes a strategy to evaluate the minimum number and best position of power injection meters in radial distribution systems for SE purposes. Measurement points are identified with the aim of reducing uncertainty in branch power flow estimations. An incremental heuristic meter placement (IHMP) approach is proposed to select the locations and total number of power measurements. The meter placement procedure was implemented for a backward/forward load flow algorithm proposed by…
A novel heuristics-based energy management system for a multi-carrier hub enriched with solid hydrogen storage
2014
In this paper, an efficient optimization algorithm for the energy management of a grid-connected energy hub plant is proposed. The Simulated Annealing algorithm is adopted for the solution of the energy management problem aiming at the profit maximization for the owner of the energy hub plant. The use of a heuristic algorithm was required by the non-linearity of the efficiencies of each component in the energy transformation stages. The proposed heuristics is applied to a large energy hub, corresponding to the simulation of the test-bed that is being designed and developed inside the ongoing INGRID European research project.
