Smart grid for offshore wind farms: Towards an information model based on the IEC 61400-25 standard

2012

Nowadays, wind energy is one of the most recognized renewable energy sources. Onshore wind farms have been built in many countries, such as Denmark, Norway, UK, Italy, Brazil and the US. To utilize the more stable wind resources, wind farms have moved off the shore, first to shallow waters near shore and now extending to deeper waters and far off the shore. Deep-water offshore solutions will give access to large areas with high wind, and less sensitivity to noise, visual impacts and size. However, the cost of developing and operating an offshore wind farm is many times larger than onshore due to large water depths and harsh offshore environments. Hence, the needs for fast and automatic data…

Simultaneous harvest-and-transmit ambient backscatter communications under Rayleigh fading

2019

Ambient backscatter communications is an emerging paradigm and a key enabler for pervasive connectivity of low-powered wireless devices. It is primarily beneficial in the Internet of things (IoT) and the situations where computing and connectivity capabilities expand to sensors and miniature devices that exchange data on a low power budget. The premise of the ambient backscatter communication is to build a network of devices capable of operating in a battery-free manner by means of smart networking, radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting and power management at the granularity of individual bits and instructions. Due to this innovation in communication methods, it is essential to investigat…

Real-time High Dynamic Range based on Multiple Non Destructive ReadOut during a Single Exposure

2017

This paper presents a new method based on Non Destructive Readout (NDRO) to improve multi-exposure High Dynamic Range (HDR) Imaging. A sequence of Low-Dynamic Range (LDR) images can then be acquired during a single exposure. The concept enables the latency between LDR images to be removed as well as the intrinsic ghost artifacts observed using state-of-art HDR systems based on multi-exposures. The method has been applied to improve the performances of HDR sensor based on logarithmic pixels. Using the NDRO method, a Short Wave InfraRed (SWIR) camera has been designed to produce HDR IR videos. A real-time HDR video stream generation is achieved based on GPU implantation.

OPENSIRACUSA.

Accuracy of an Affordable Smartphone-Based Teledermoscopy System for Color Measurements in Canine Skin

2020

Quality smartphone cameras and affordable dermatoscopes have enabled teledermoscopy to become a popular medical and veterinary tool for analyzing skin lesions such as melanoma and erythema. However, smartphones acquire images in an unknown RGB color space, which prevents a standardized colorimetric skin analysis. In this work, we supplemented a typical veterinary teledermoscopy system with a conventional color calibration procedure, and we studied two mid-priced smartphones in evaluating native and erythematous canine skin color. In a laboratory setting with the ColorChecker, the teledermoscopy system reached CIELAB-based color differences &Delta

Media use during adolescence: the recommendations of the Italian Pediatric Society

2019

Abstract Background The use of media device, such as smartphone and tablet, is currently increasing, especially among the youngest. Adolescents spend more and more time with their smartphones consulting social media, mainly Facebook, Instagram and Twitter because. Adolescents often feel the necessity to use a media device as a means to construct a social identity and express themselves. For some children, smartphone ownership starts even sooner as young as 7 yrs, according to internet safety experts. Material and methods We analyzed the evidence on media use and its consequences in adolescence. Results In literature, smartphones and tablets use may negatively influences the psychophysical d…

Small Wind Turbines: Specification, Design, and Economic Evaluation

2016

In this work, we consider various aspects of small wind turbines' (SWTs) design and operation. First, an extensive literature study is presented by considering SWTs specification, market statistics, the smart grid, and the prosumer concepts as well as the most important parameters affecting the efficiency of wind turbines. Then, both the literature review and series of coupled numerical simulations investigating impact of the chosen design solutions on small wind turbine operation are performed. It allowed objective evaluation of different design approaches, which in turn enabled the systematic identification of actual limitations as well as the opportunities for specific design solutions o…

A FEM piezoelectric beam model for damping circuit analysis

2013

A finite element, developed for straight generally layered smart beam, is used to investigate vibration damping capability of circuit elements. First, the electric state is analytically condensed to kinematical quantities and the mechanical model is then written for shear deformable Timoshenko’s beam including the effects of electro-elastic couplings stacking sequence. The contributions of the external electric loads on both the equivalent stiffness properties and the equivalent mechanical boundary conditions are also taken into account. The finite element is formulated by using Hermite shape functions, which depend on parameters representative of the staking sequence through the equivalent…

Designing Cognitive Cities

2019

The following text intends to give an introduction into some of the basic ideas which determined the conception of this book. Thus, the first part of this article introduces the terms “City”, “Smart City” and “Cognitive City”. The second part gives an overview of design theories and approaches such as Action Design Research and Ontological Design (a concept in-the-making), in order to deduce from a theoretical point of view some of the principles that needs to be taken into account when designing the Cognitive City. The third part highlights some concrete techniques that can be usefully applied to the problem of citizen communication for Cognitive Cities (namely Metaheuristics, Fuzzy Sets a…
