Functional Thin Films for Glazing Application
2009
Vanadium dioxide is a thermochromic material with great potential for use in intelligent glazing. The thermochromic properties result from a metal to semiconductor transition (MST) where there is an associated structural change from the higher temperature rutile structure to the lower temperature monoclinic structure. This structural transition results in significant changes in optical properties and electrical conductivity. Various chemical vapour deposition (CVD) methodologies have been utilised, to produce thin films of vanadium dioxide. Different strategies are presented for the inclusion of metal dopants and the production of nano-composites. The use of a surfactant molecule, tetraocty…
Energy modelling studies of enhanced glazing.
2009
The research on new “energy materials” is a very interesting field of study in the direction of energy saving control in the building construction sector. Lots of studies have been carrying on to develop new enhanced glazing, new synthesis and analysing procedures but simulating their real behaviour is often very difficult and expensive. The easiest way to test the energy performance of new enhanced glazing, in this work doped vanadium (IV) dioxide thermochromic glazing, is to simulate the way they would respond if they were installed in a building. The software used to perform such simulations is Energy Plus™ which is an energy analysis and thermal load simulation program. The aim of this …
A smart composite-piezoelectric one-dimensional finite element model for vibration damping analysis
2015
A one-dimensional finite element method for generally layered smart beams is presented in this paper. The model implements the first-order shear deformation beam theory and is based on the preliminary analytical condensation of the electric state to the mechanical state. This allows us to establish an effective mechanical beam kinematically equivalent to the original smart beam including the effects of electro-elastic couplings. The contributions of the external electric loads are included in both the equivalent stiffness properties and the equivalent mechanical boundary conditions. Hermite shape functions, which depend on parameters representative of the staking sequence through the equiv…
A one-dimensional model for dynamic analysis of generally layered magneto-electro-elastic beams
2013
Abstract A new one-dimensional model for the dynamic problem of magneto-electro-elastic generally laminated beams is presented. The electric and magnetic fields are assumed to be quasi-static and a first-order shear beam theory is used. The electro-magnetic problem is first solved in terms of the mechanical variables, then the equations of motion are written leading to the problem governing equations. They involve the same terms of the elastic dynamic problem weighted by effective stiffness coefficients, which take the magneto-electro-mechanical couplings into account. Additional terms, which involve the third spatial derivative of the transverse displacement, also occur as a result of the …
Analytical solution for the magneto-electro-elastic bimorph beam forced vibrations problem
2009
Based on the Timoshenko beam theory and on the assumption that the electric and magnetic fields can be treated as steady, since elastic waves propagate very slowly with respect to electromagnetic ones, a general analytical solution for the transient analysis of a magneto-electro-elastic bimorph beam is obtained. General magneto-electric boundary conditions can be applied on the top and bottom surfaces of the beam, allowing us to study the response of the bilayer structure to electromagnetic stimuli. The model reveals that the magneto-electric loads enter the solution as an equivalent external bending moment per unit length and as time-dependent mechanical boundary conditions through the def…

Use of ICT in Smart Cities. A practical case applied to traffic management in the city of Valencia
2015
The whole process of converting a city into the new concept of Smart City implies the improvement of the efficiency and quality of services made available by governments and businesses and a corresponding increase in citizens' quality of life.
Smart parking system - another way of sharing economy provided by private institutions
2018
This paper presents our smart parking solution implemented at “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu (LBUS) Romania, which consists in a hardware / software embedded system for managing the institution’s parking lots, namely sharing the parking places in excess for people who are in traffic in neighbourhood of LBUS and are looking to park. Our solution is flexible, universal, applicable to all faculties that have car parks from Romania and not only, in university cities where the crowd is bigger, but also to other private institutions that own parking spaces inefficiently exploited. The advantages introduced are primarily economic, then social and even environmental. The first benefit is econom…
Smart vs conventional motorways: environmental impact assessment under realistic traffic conditions
2020
Abstract This research aims at assessing the environmental impacts exerted by a smart motorway compared to those of a traditional motorway. The study has global policy implications: it takes into account the impacts due to the construction and maintenance of the infrastructure and the environmental effects produced by the traffic emissions, taking into account smart technologies and truck platooning regulation. Through a classical LCA approach, 1 km-long smart motorway with 2 m-high embankment was assumed as the functional unit for the analysis. A realistic traffic condition has been considered. A comparison between environmental effects produced by the use of virgin material and by Reclaim…
