Nutritional supplements for neuropsychiatric symptoms in people with dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2020

The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of nutritional supplementation on neuropsychiatric symptoms among people with dementia. Methods/Design: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched in the Databases PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Clinicaltrials.gov from inception until January 31, 2020. Studies of RCTs carried out on people with any type of dementia who were taking nutritional supplements and had neuropsychiatric symptoms were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Neuropsychiatric symptoms were assessed with the validated Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Effect sizes were calculated with standardized mea…

The 1.4 mm core of Centaurus A: First VLBI results with the South Pole Telescope

2018

Centaurus A (Cen A) is a bright radio source associated with the nearby galaxy NGC 5128 where high-resolution radio observations can probe the jet at scales of less than a light-day. The South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) performed a single-baseline very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observation of Cen A in January 2015 as part of VLBI receiver deployment for the SPT. We measure the correlated flux density of Cen A at a wavelength of 1.4 mm on a $\sim$7000 km (5 G$\lambda$) baseline. Ascribing this correlated flux density to the core, and with the use of a contemporaneous short-baseline flux density from a Submillimeter Array observation, we infer …

Heavy fermion spin liquid in herbertsmithite

2015

We analyze recent heat capacity measurements in herbertsmithite $\rm ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2$ single crystal samples subjected to strong magnetic fields. We show that the temperature dependence of specific heat $C_{mag}$ formed by quantum spin liquid at different magnetic fields $B$ resembles the electronic heat capacity $C_{el}$ of the HF metal $\rm YbRh_2Si_2$. We demonstrate that the spinon effective mass $M^*_{mag}\propto C_{mag}/T$ exhibits a scaling behavior like that of $C_{el}/T$. We also show that the recent measurements of $C_{mag}$ are compatible with those obtained on powder samples. These observations allow us to conclude that $\rm ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2$ holds a stable strongly correlated …

The ins and outs of cholesterol in the vertebrate retina

2010

Thematic Review Series: Lipids and Lipid Metabolism in the Eye; International audience; The vertebrate retina has multiple demands for utilization of cholesterol and must meet those demands either by synthesizing its own supply of cholesterol or by importing cholesterol from extraretinal sources, or both. Unlike the blood-brain barrier, the blood-retina barrier allows uptake of cholesterol from the circulation via a lipoprotein-based/receptor-mediated mechanism. Under normal conditions, cholesterol homeostasis is tightly regulated; also, cholesterol exists in the neural retina overwhelmingly in unesterified form, and sterol intermediates are present in minimal to negligible quantities. Howe…

Thermodynamic, dynamic and transport properties of quantum spin liquid in herbertsmithite from experimental and theoretical point of view

2019

In our review we focus on the quantum spin liquid, defining the thermodynamic, transport and relaxation properties of geometrically frustrated magnets (insulators) represented by herbertsmithite $\rm ZnCu_{3}(OH)_6Cl_2$.

Universal Behavior of Quantum Spin Liquid and Optical Conductivity in the Insulator Herbertsmithite

2018

We analyze optical conductivity with the goal to demonstrate experimental manifestation of a new state of matter, the so-called fermion condensate. Fermion condensates are realized in quantum spin liquids, exhibiting typical behavior of heavy fermion metals. Measurements of the low-frequency optical conductivity collected on the geometrically frustrated insulator herbertsmithite provide important experimental evidence of the nature of its quantum spin liquid composed of spinons. To analyze recent measurements of the herbertsmithite optical conductivity at different temperatures, we employ a model of strongly correlated quantum spin liquid located near the fermion condensation phase transiti…

La Kasbah organizzata

2013
