Primary cilia are required for cerebellar development and Shh-dependent expansion of progenitor pool

2008

Cerebellar granule cell precursors (GCPs), which give rise to the most abundant neuronal type in the mammalian brain, arise from a restricted pool of primary progenitors in the rhombic lip (RL). Sonic hedgehog (Shh) secreted by developing Purkinje cells is essential for the expansion of GCPs and for cerebellar morphogenesis. Recent studies have shown that the primary cilium concentrates components of Shh signaling and that this structure is required for Shh signaling. GCPs have a primary cilium on their surface [Del Cerro, M.P., Snider, R.S. (1972). Studies on the developing cerebellum. II. The ultrastructure of the external granular layer. J Comp Neurol 144, 131-64.]. Here, we show that 1)…

Global treatment of chromatographic data with MICHROM

1997

Abstract The program MICHROM for the general treatment of chromatographic data is presented. MICHROM takes part in all the stages of the analytical process. It allows determination of dead time, smoothing of chromatograms, measurement of peak parameters, fitting of skewed peaks, and deconvolution of overlapped peaks. Tools for the experimental design, optimization of the mobile phase composition to resolve a mixture of analytes, and simulation of chromatograms in several experimental conditions, are implemented. Routines for the graphical representation of chromatograms, resolution surfaces, contour maps, management of data series, optimization and regression analysis, are also included. Th…

Robustified smoothing for enhancement of thermal image sequences affected by clouds

2015

Obtaining radiometric surface temperature information with both high acquisition rate and high spatial resolution is still not possible through a single sensor. However, in several earth observation applications, the fusion of data acquired by different sensors is a viable solution for so called image sharpening. A related issue is the presence of clouds, which may impair the performance of the data fusion algorithms. In this paper we propose a robustified setup for the sharpening of thermal images in a non real-time scenario, capable to deal with missing thermal data due to cloudy pixels, and robust with respect to cloud mask misclassifications. The effectiveness of the presented technique…

Mathematical Morphology for Color Images: An Image-Dependent Approach

2012

This paper proposes one possibility to generalize the morphological operations (particularly, dilation, erosion, opening, and closing) to color images. First, properties of a desirable generalization are stated and a brief review is done on former approaches. Then, the method is explained, which is based on a total ordering of the colors in an image induced by its color histogram; this is valid for just one image and may present problems in smoothly coloured images. To solve these drawbacks a refinement consisting of smoothing the histogram and using a joint histogram of several images is presented. Results of applying the so-defined morphological operations on several sets of images are sh…

Simplified analytical model for flexural response of external R.C. frames with smooth rebars

2018

In this paper an analytical model in a closed form able to reproduce the monotonic flexural response of external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars is presented. The column is subjected to a constant vertical load and the beam to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip. The model is based on the flexural behavior of the beam and the column determined adopting a concentrated plasticity hinge model including slippage of the main reinforcing bars of the beam. A simplified bilinear moment-axial force domain is assumed to derive the ultimate moment associated with the design axial force. For the joint, a simple truss model is adopted to predict shear strength and panel …

Error Bounds for the Numerical Evaluation of Integrals with Weights

1988

This paper is concerned with a procedure of obtaining error bounds for numerically evaluated integrals with weights. If \( - \infty \mathop < \limits_ = a < b\mathop < \limits_ = \infty \), w integrable over [a,b] and positive almost everywhere, then an approximation of \({I_W}f: = \int\limits_a^b {w\left( t \right)f\left( t \right)dt} \) by a quadrature rule \({Q_n}f: = \sum\limits_{i = 0}^n {{\alpha _i}f\left( {{t_i}} \right)} \) is leading to the error Enf ≔ Iwf ‒ Qnf. An algorithm is derived for the computation of bounds for |Enf| depending on the smoothness of the integrand f and on the degree of exactness of Q. As initial values this algorithm needs moments of the weighting function w…

EP 34. Functional hierarchy within the neural network for optokinetic ‘look’ nystagmus

2016

Item does not contain fulltext Key nodes of neural networks for ocular motor control and visual motion processing have been localized using saccades, smooth pursuit, and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). Within the context of an independent fMRI study using OKN, 9 bilateral network nodes were localized comprising cortical eye fields in frontal (FEF), supplementary motor (SEF), cingulate (CEF) and parietal cortex (PEF), visual motion centers MT+ and V6, the superior colliculus (SC), the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and the globus pallidus (GP). Here, we examined the network's functional hierarchy as present in the structural co-variation (SCoV) and resting-state (RS) fMRI, and the effect of R…

Asynchronous sensor fusion of GPS, IMU and CAN-based odometry for heavy-duty vehicles

2021

[EN] In heavy-duty vehicles, multiple signals are available to estimate the vehicle's kinematics, such as Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), Global Positioning System (GPS) and linear and angular speed readings from wheel tachometers on the internal Controller Area Network (CAN). These signals have different noise variance, bandwidth and sampling rate (being the latter, possibly, irregular). In this paper we present a non-linear sensor fusion algorithm allowing asynchronous sampling and non-causal smoothing. It is applied to achieve accuracy improvements when incorporating odometry measurements from CAN bus to standard GPS+IMU kinematic estimation, as well as the robustness against missing da…

Highlighting numerical insights of an efficient SPH method

2018

Abstract In this paper we focus on two sources of enhancement in accuracy and computational demanding in approximating a function and its derivatives by means of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method. The approximating power of the standard method is perceived to be poor and improvements can be gained making use of the Taylor series expansion of the kernel approximation of the function and its derivatives. The modified formulation is appealing providing more accurate results of the function and its derivatives simultaneously without changing the kernel function adopted in the computation. The request for greater accuracy needs kernel function derivatives with order up to the desidered …
