A CUDA-based implementation of an improved SPH method on GPU

2021

We present a CUDA-based parallel implementation on GPU architecture of a modified version of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. This modified formulation exploits a strategy based on the Taylor series expansion, which simultaneously improves the approximation of a function and its derivatives with respect to the standard formulation. The improvement in accuracy comes at the cost of an additional computational effort. The computational demand becomes increasingly crucial as problem size increases but can be addressed by employing fast summations in a parallel computational scheme. The experimental analysis showed that our parallel implementation significantly reduces the runti…

Finite element approximation for a div-rot system with mixed boundary conditions in non-smooth plane domains

1984

The authors examine a finite element method for the numerical approximation of the solution to a div-rot system with mixed boundary conditions in bounded plane domains with piecewise smooth boundary. The solvability of the system both in an infinite and finite dimensional formulation is proved. Piecewise linear element fields with pointwise boundary conditions are used and their approximation properties are studied. Numerical examples indicating the accuracy of the method are given. peerReviewed

Biomimetic strategy towards gelatin coatings on PET. Effect of protocol on coating stability and cell-interactive properties

2019

Gelatin-modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) surfaces have been previously realized via an intermediate dopamine coating procedure that resulted in surfaces with superior haemocompatibility compared to unfunctionalized PET. The present study addresses the biocompatibility assessment of these coated PET surfaces. In this context, the stability of the gelatin coating upon exposure to physiological conditions and its cell-interactive properties were investigated. The proposed gelatin–dopamine-PET surfaces showed an increased protein coating stability up to 24 days and promoted the attachment and spreading of both endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs). In parallel, physi…

Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters: X-ray scaling relations and their evolution

2018

We analyse cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters to study the X-ray scaling relations between total masses and observable quantities such as X-ray luminosity, gas mass, X-ray temperature, and $Y_{X}$. Three sets of simulations are performed with an improved version of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics GADGET-3 code. These consider the following: non-radiative gas, star formation and stellar feedback, and the addition of feedback by active galactic nuclei (AGN). We select clusters with $M_{500} > 10^{14} M_{\odot} E(z)^{-1}$, mimicking the typical selection of Sunyaev-Zeldovich samples. This permits to have a mass range large enough to enable robust fitting of the r…

In this paper a comprehensive system-level computational model of oculomotor pathways is presented. This model shows the necessity of embedding internal models of muscles biomechanics in the cerebellar Vermis to realize fast saccadic eye movements based on predicting the changes in muscles lengths. First, the eye biomechanics are described by nonlinear equations during “slow” and “fast” movements. Afterward, by analyzing these equations, a computational model, is deduced. Furthermore, each part of this model is interpreted as a possible function of an element in the oculomotor pathways based on physiological and anatomical pieces of evidence. In this model, two internal feedback loops compe…

NG-monomethyl-L-arginine and NG-nitro-L-arginine inhibit endothelium-dependent relaxations in human isolated omental arteries.

1991

Abstract The L-arginine analogues NG-monomethyl-l-arginine (l-NMMA, 10−4  m) and NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME, 10−4  m), which specifically inhibit the synthesis of nitric oxide from l-arginine, significantly reduced acetylcholine-induced endothelium-dependent relaxations in rings of human omental arteries. The inhibitory potency of l-NMMA and l-NAME was similar. Addition of l-NMMA or l-NAME to the organ bath did not induce any significant changes in the resting tension of the tissues. The effects of l-NMMA were reversed by l-arginine (3 × 10−4  m). The l-NMMA enantiomer, d-NMMA (10−4  m), did not influence either the basal tone of the preparation or the relaxing effects of acet…

Fast Computation by Subdivision of Multidimensional Splines and Their Applications

2016

We present theory and algorithms for fast explicit computations of uni- and multi-dimensional periodic splines of arbitrary order at triadic rational points and of splines of even order at diadic rational points. The algorithms use the forward and the inverse Fast Fourier transform (FFT). The implementation is as fast as FFT computation. The algorithms are based on binary and ternary subdivision of splines. Interpolating and smoothing splines are used for a sample rate convertor such as resolution upsampling of discrete-time signals and digital images and restoration of decimated images that were contaminated by noise. The performance of the rate conversion based spline is compared with the…

ON SOME GENERALIZATION OF SMOOTHING PROBLEMS

2015

The paper deals with the generalized smoothing problem in abstract Hilbert spaces. This generalized problem involves particular cases such as the interpolating problem, the smoothing problem with weights, the smoothing problem with obstacles, the problem on splines in convex sets and others. The theorem on the existence and characterization of a solution of the generalized problem is proved. It is shown how the theorem gives already known theorems in special cases as well as some new results.

The Socio-Material Value of Language Choices in Mozambique and Finland

2022

AbstractThis chapter explores parental choice of language programs from a socio-material standpoint. It uses a DeleuzoGuattarian framework of smooth and striated spaces to understand how parents in Mozambique and Finland position themselves when making choices concerning their children’s language education. We analyzed interviews from Finland and focus groups and policy documents from Mozambique to understand the materialities and social discourses that constitute parental choice. We found that in Finland, materiality as a physical space (e.g., school location) factored into caregivers’ decision making when selecting schools for their children. In Mozambique, in turn, materiality as socioec…

LASSO regression via smooth L1-norm approximation

2010

This paper discusses estimation of regression model with LASSO penalty when the L1-norm is replaced with its parametric smooth approximation. The resulting parameter estimators are more manageable than those from standard LASSO, standard errors are easy computed via a sandwich formula, and the model degrees of freedom may be computed straightforwardly. Moreover the resulting objective function may be minimized using usual optimization algorithms for regular models, for instance Newton-Raphson or iterative least squares.
