The Euro Area Crisis; Need for a Supranational Fiscal Risk Sharing Mechanism?

The aim of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of risk sharing mechanisms in the euro area and whether a supranational fiscal risk sharing mechanism could insure countries against very severe downturns. Using an unbalanced panel of 15 euro area countries over the period 1979–2010, the results of the paper show that: (i) the effectiveness of risk sharing mechanisms in the euro area is significantly lower than in existing federations (such as the U.S. and Germany) and (ii) it falls sharply in severe downturns just when it is needed most; (iii) a supranational fiscal stabilization mechanism, financed by a relatively small contribution, would be able to fully insure euro area countries …

High-end colorimetric display characterization using an adaptive training set

A new, accurate, and technology-independent display color-characterization model is introduced. It is based on polyharmonic spline interpolation and on an optimized adaptive training data set. The establishment of this model is fully automatic and requires only a few minutes, making it efficient in a practical situation. The experimental results are very good for both the forward and inverse models. Typically, the proposed model yields an average model prediction error of about 1 ∆Eab* unit or below for several displays. Conjugate times for smooth singular trajectories and bang-bang extremals

Abstract In this paper we discuss the problem of estimating conjugate times along smooth singular or bang-bang extremals. For smooth extremals conjugate times can be defined in the generic case by using the intrinsic second order derivative or the exponential mapping. Current economic downturn and supply chain: The significance of demand and inventory smoothing

The aim of this article is to analyse and quantify the effects of demand and inventory smoothing into supply-chain performance, facing the extreme volatility and impetuous alteration of the market produced by the current economic recession. The current and upcoming generation of Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescopes – collecting unprecedented quantities of neutrino events – can be used to explore subtle effects in oscillation physics, such as (but not restricted to) the neutrino mass ordering. Fast Computation by Subdivision of Multidimensional Splines and Their Applications

We present theory and algorithms for fast explicit computations of uni- and multi-dimensional periodic splines of arbitrary order at triadic rational points and of splines of even order at diadic rational points. The algorithms use the forward and the inverse Fast Fourier transform (FFT). The implementation is as fast as FFT computation. The algorithms are based on binary and ternary subdivision of splines. ON SOME GENERALIZATION OF SMOOTHING PROBLEMS

The paper deals with the generalized smoothing problem in abstract Hilbert spaces. This generalized problem involves particular cases such as the interpolating problem, the smoothing problem with weights, the smoothing problem with obstacles, the problem on splines in convex sets and others. The theorem on the existence and characterization of a solution of the generalized problem is proved.
