Low-Temperature Optical Spectroscopy of Native and Azide-Reacted Bovine Cu,Zn Superoxide Dismutase. A Structural Dynamics Study

The optical absorption spectra of native and N(3-)-reacted Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) has been studied in the temperature range 300-10 K. The broad d-d bands observed in the room temperature spectrum, centered at 14,700 cm-1 (native enzyme) and at 15,550 cm-1 (N(3-)-reacted enzyme), are clearly split at low temperature into two bands each, centered at 12,835 and 14,844 cm-1 and at 14,418 and 16,300 cm-1, respectively. The thermal behavior of the 23,720 cm-1 band present in the spectrum of the native enzyme indicates that this band belongs to the His61-->Cu(II) ligand to metal charge transfer transition. Abstract The compounds [quinolinium]4[Bi2Cl10] (1), [isoquinolinium]4[Bi2Cl10].2H2O (2) and [8-hydroxyquinolinium]4[BiCl6]·Cl·2H2O (3) have been obtained by reacting bismuthate oxide and the appropriate base in HCl acid medium. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 consist of quinolinium and isoquinolinium cations, respectively, interacting through hydrogen bonding with [Bi2Cl10]4− dimers. The different degree of interactions in the two derivatives causes significant differences in the bond distances of the anions. Complexes of organometallic compounds

Abstract The novel organobismuth(V) derivatives Ph 3 BiCl(Ox) and Ph 3 BiBr(Ox) (Ox − = 8-quinolinate) have been synthesized, and their configuration investigated in the solid state and in solution. The complexes are assumed to be octahedral in the solid, with Ox − acting as a chelating base and the halide atoms coordinating to bismuth. Tentative assignments of infrared bands in the 300–80 cm −1 region to BiHal and other skeletal modes are proposed. The main effect of solvents appears to be the weakening and breaking of BiN-bonds.

Effect of iron and aeration on superoxide dismutase and catalase activity of PHB-producing Azotobacter chroococcum

Abstract The effect of aeration level and iron concentration on Azotobacter chroococcum 23 growth, PHB accumulation and antioxidative enzyme activities was investigated in shake flask experiments. Biomass yield and carbon source conversation coefficients increased in the presence of iron in the growth medium and under decreased aeration. The highest biomass production was observed for the culture grown in a medium with 36 μM of initial iron concentration and moderate aeration level. The highest PHB accumulation level (70–72% from cell dry weight) under our experimental conditions was observed at decreased aeration in the growth medium with 180 μM of initial iron concentration. Antioxidant compound supplementation prevents oxidative damage in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

Loss-of-function mutations in the DJ-1 gene are linked to rare autosomal recessive forms of parkinsonism. In Drosophila, two DJ-1 orthologs have been identified, DJ-1α and DJ-1β. Several studies have shown that DJ-1β mutant flies are viable and fertile but exhibit age-dependent locomotor defects, shortened life span, and enhanced sensitivity to toxins that induce oxidative stress response compared to control flies. We also demonstrated that long-term dietary supplementation with antioxidant compounds was effective at increasing life-span values of DJ-1β mutants. Reactive oxygen species mediate angiotensin II-induced leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions in vivo

Abstract Chronically elevated angiotensin II (Ang-II)-induced hypertension is partly mediated by superoxide production. In this study, we have investigated whether the leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions elicited by Ang-II involve reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Intravital microscopy within the rat mesenteric microvessels was used. Superfusion (60 min) with Ang-II (1 nM) induced significant increases in leukocyte rolling flux, adhesion, and emigration, which were inhibited by pretreatment with superoxide dismutase or catalase. Long term p38-a deficiency up-regulates antioxidant enzymes through compensatory NF-?B activation

p38a MAPK may function as a mediator of reactive oxygen species signaling and thus p38a is considered a sensor of oxidative stress. In liver-specific p38a knock-out (KO) adult mice we previously found glutathione depletion and down-regulation of antioxidant enzymes.
