A step forward in the development of superoxide dismutase mimetic nanozymes: the effect of the charge of the surface on antioxidant activity

Two binucleating hezaaza macrocycles containing a pyridinol spacer have been prepared and characterised. Protonation studies indicate the deprotonation of the phenol group at relatively low pH values with the concomitant occurrence of a keto-enolic equilibrium. These ligands readily form binuclear Cu2+ and Zn2+ complexes as denoted by potentiometric and spectroscopic studies. The binding of the metals yields to the ready deprotonation of the phenol with the stabilisation of the keto form that results in complexes of greater stabilities than the analogous ones containing pyridine as spacer instead of pyridine. Synergistic Anticancer Therapy by Ovalbumin Encapsulation-Enabled Tandem Reactive Oxygen Species Generation

Abstract The anticancer efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is limited due to the hypoxic features of solid tumors. We report synergistic PDT/chemotherapy with integrated tandem Fenton reactions mediated by ovalbumin encapsulation for improved in vivo anticancer therapy via an enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation mechanism. O2 .− produced by the PDT is converted to H2O2 by superoxide dismutase, followed by the transformation of H2O2 to the highly toxic .OH via Fenton reactions by Fe2+ originating from the dissolution of co‐loaded Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Globins and hypoxia adaptation in the goldfish, Carassius auratus

Goldfish (Carassius auratus) may survive in aquatic environments with low oxygen partial pressures. We investigated the contribution of respiratory proteins to hypoxia tolerance in C. auratus. We determined the complete coding sequence of hemoglobin α and β and myoglobin, as well as partial cDNAs from neuroglobin and cytoglobin. Like the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), C. auratus possesses two paralogous myoglobin genes that duplicated within the cyprinid lineage. Myoglobin is also expressed in nonmuscle tissues. Detailed spectroscopy of 195Bi

An experiment focused on the study of shape coexistence and new high-spin structures in 195 Bi has been performed. The nucleus is in a transitional region of the bismuth isotope chain. A large number of new states have been found, resulting in a significant extension of the previously known level scheme. Several new collective structures have been identified. A strongly coupled rotational band built upon the 13 / 2 + isomeric state was extended up to I π = ( 49 / 2 + ) and an energy of 5706 keV. The I π = 31 / 2 + member of the π i 13 / 2 band was also found to feed a new long-lived isomeric state with an excitation energy of 2616 keV and a spin and parity of I π = 29 / 2 + . The half-life …
Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes ¹⁹³,¹⁹⁵Bi

Two experiments aiming to study the shape coexistence and competing structures in 193Bi and 195Bi isotopes have been performed at the Accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyv askyl a, Finland (JYFL). Many new states have been found, hugely extending the previously known level schemes for both isotopes. The i13=2 bands were extended up to I = 45/2+ in both the 193;195Bi isotopes. In case of 193Bi, the I = 31/2+ member of the i13=2 band was found to de-excite also to a long-lived isomeric state. This link determines the energy of the isomeric state to be 2350(1) keV and suggests a spin and parity of 29/2+. The half-life of the isomeric state was measured to be 85(3) s. A level structur…

Mechanisms of arachidonic acid induced glial swelling

Accumulation of arachidonic acid (AA) in the brain during ischaemia may contribute to development of brain oedema. In this study we investigated the effect of selected drugs on AA-induced cytotoxic brain oedema in C6 glioma cells. Suspended C6 glioma cells were preincubated with drugs and AA (0.1 mM) was added. When no drug was administered cell volume increased immediately after the addition of AA with a maximum cell swelling of 13.1+/-1.9% at 15 min (mean +/- S.E. M.). Preincubation of cells with BW 755C, a dual inhibitor of cyclo- and lipoxygenases, showed no reduction in cell swelling from AA, whereas superoxide dismutase, amiloride and the protein kinase inhibitor H-9370 led to a signi…

In the left ventricle subjected to pressure overload activity, the antioxidant enzymes increased at the hyperfunctional stage. During the transition to heart failure, these enzymes are down-regulated, oxidative stress increases, and apoptosis progresses. Maladaptative activation of the antioxidant enzymes at an early stage may contribute to the intrinsic vulnerability of right ventricle to pressure overload.
