Transnational monasteries: The economic performance of cloistered women
2015
Monastery research not only throws light on little-known aspects of Christianity in Africa, but also can make an important contribution to the understanding of the processes of social change and debates on globalization in African societies. The contemplative orders develop alternative economic forms, interact with their local environment, and build transnational networks or integrate into them. They emerge as local and transnational actors, change in the course of these processes, and contribute to the social change in the societies in which they participate. This interaction is the focus of the article, which is based on the analysis of a case study, a Benedictine abbey in Koubri, near t…
Social Inequalities in French Secondary Schools : From Figures to Theories
1996
In spite of the unified type of junior secondary school (the "college") implemented in France since 1975, significant social inequalities of school careers can be observed today. A specific longitudinal study sheds some light on the variety of mechanisms which generate these social inequalities. Difference in academic progress is one mechanism, but parents' strategies are also important. Finally, another aspect of social inequality arises from the school attended, some schools being more selective at the streaming points, these "school effects' being related to the social characteristics of the pupils of the catchment area. All these facts and figures have some relevance with regard to diff…

Uses and Abuses of Creativity. Sociology of creative processes, transitions to digital and creative policies
2017
Creativity is a notion awakening growing interest in the social sciences. This attention mirrors the debate on the potential economic and social development of creativity as a skill, profession or industry. However, there is also rising critical interpretation of the abuse of this concept, exploited to legitimize the hasty digitization of the cultural field, and of the instrumentalization of culture in pursuit of economic interests. This article is grounded on the contributions of numerous sociologists (Bourdieu, Collins and Menger) in an attempt to reconsider the conditions under which creativity develops, and examine how the framework of digitalization and instrumentalization is shifting …

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPEMNT CONCEPT
2017
Sustainable development constitutes a paradigm which is to respond to the risks of our times (environmental, social and economic ones). It is based on the necessity to use resources in a way which will not deprive future generations of them. Such a development seeks to improve the quality of life of the community while maintaining social equality, diversity and the wealth of natural resources. It can be perceived as a broader social change which Jeremy Rifkin called “the third industrial revolution”, and whose symptoms can be seen today. Within the scope of this concept, there is the social entrepreneurship that, through the market activities, focuses on the social mission. Such a mission m…

Degrowth, the past, the future, and the human nature
2012
Abstract In the last years, different sources point to a same message: industrial civilization has entered an overshoot mode, the natural limits to growth have been already surpassed. This frontier does not wait for us in the future; it already belongs to our past. If population and the economy are truly beyond the limits, then current visions and theories of social change would be deeply perturbed. If the development era is approaching its end, then many sociological theories on current societies will share the same destiny, sustainable development doctrines between them. It is worth to examine theories that explicitly look at the social world this way or that – at least – are not incompat…
