Religious Organizations and Local Self-government Units as Entities Cooperating in The Enforcement of Criminal Judgements

2019

Związki wyznaniowe oraz jednostki samorządu terytorialnego to podmioty współdziałające w wykonywaniu kar, środków karnych, kompensacyjnych, zabezpieczających, zapobiegawczych oraz przepadku. Można je również traktować w kategoriach organów społecznej kontroli nad wykonywaniem tych orzeczeń. Współdziałanie takich podmiotów uzyskało rangę dyrektywy ustawowej i służyć ma readaptacji społecznej skazanych i zapobieganiu przestępczości. W przypadku przedstawicieli związków wyznaniowych współdziałanie posiada także charakter wychowawczy i poprawczy. Galileo, God and Mathematics

2005

This chapter explores the relationship between God and the mathematics of Galileo. In the early modern era, the mathematical sciences began to produce potential instruments of power and to supply technically and socially valuable knowledge—for use in engineering, administration, and social control. This ability to produce useful knowledge and potential instruments of power became the critical basis for the existence of the mathematical sciences. In discussing Galileo's thoughts about mathematics and the mathematical sciences, it is necessary to keep in mind that he did not codify them and that he worked—as did many early modern scholars—with conflicting epistemologies. Furthermore, there is…

The Willingness to Intervene in Cases of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women (WI-IPVAW) Scale: Development and Validation of the Long and Short V…

2018

Willingness to intervene when one becomes aware of a case of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) reflects the level of tolerance and acceptance of this type of violence in society. Increasing the likelihood of intervention to help victims of IPVAW is also a target for prevention strategies aiming to increase informal social control of IPVAW. In this study, we present the development and validation of the Willingness to Intervene in Cases of Intimate Partner Violence (WI-IPVAW) scale. We report data for both the long and short versions of the scale. We analyzed the latent structure, the reliability and validity of the WI-IPVAW across four samples (N = 1648). Factor analyses suppo…

Research in disaster settings: a systematic qualitative review of ethical guidelines

2016

Background Conducting research during or in the aftermath of disasters poses many specific practical and ethical challenges. This is particularly the case with research involving human subjects. The extraordinary circumstances of research conducted in disaster settings require appropriate regulations to ensure the protection of human participants. The goal of this study is to systematically and qualitatively review the existing ethical guidelines for disaster research by using the constant comparative method (CCM). Methods We performed a systematic qualitative review of disaster research ethics guidelines to collect and compare existing regulations. Guidelines were identified by a three-tie…

Personalizzazione dell’intervento e universalismo delle prestazioni: una declinazione agency struttura nella riflessione sul welfare state di Achille…

2021

This paper highlights how the historical-sociological reconstruction of the birth and diffusion of the welfare state in industrialized countries carried out by Achille Ardigò in his essay Introduction to the Sociological Analysis of the Welfare State and its Transformations constitutes a milestone for the sociology of welfare. The analysis of the Italian sociologist’s considerations deepens the debate inherent in the functions of care and control of the system whose phenomenology outlines universalization of services and personalization of intervention. We argue that Ardigò sees the welfare state as a necessary modality for the life of developed societies. It is a social technology that con…

From arsenic to DDT: Pesticides, Fascism and the invisibility of toxic risks in the early years of Francoist Spain (1939-1953)

2021

This paper reviews the way in which Spanish agriculture climbed onto the pesticide treadmill. We claim that Fascist policies and expert advice assembled in the early 1940s accelerated the introduction of pesticides into Spanish agriculture and promoted the emergence of the Spanish pesticide industry in the times of autarky. Agricultural engineers were the key protagonists in this process, but other human and non-human actors also played a pivotal role: a new pest (the Colorado beetle), Francoist politicians, farmers, landowners and industry managers. Our focus is on the use of pesticides against the Colorado beetle (the main threat to the potato crop), and the transition from arsenical pest…

Sport and physical activity in a high security Spanish prison: an ethnographic study of multiple meanings

2009

Drawing on data generated by a two-year ethnographic study in a high security Spanish prison, this article explores the multiple meanings given to the social practices of sport and physical activity. We provide details of the following key themes that emerged from the analysis: (a) escaping time; (b) perceived therapeutic benefits; (c) social control; (d) gendered dimensions; and (e) performing masculinity. The findings suggest that a diverse and contradictory set of meanings are associated with sport and physical activity within this particular prison culture, and that the performance of specific kinds of masculinity is both a process and product that shapes the construction of experience …
