Sociology of Education and Construction of Educational Policies : From the Theory to the Practice
2020
Darwinism and the Origin of Life
2012
Abstract Historically, ideas on the origins of life have been mingled with evolutionary explanations. Darwin avoided discussing the origin of the very first species in public although he acknowledged the possibility that life originated by natural causes. Some of his followers adopted this materialistic position and advocated some sort of spontaneous generation in the distant past. Nevertheless, Pasteur’s experiments were a major obstacle for scientific acceptance of the sudden emergence of life. The scientific study of the origin of life, established in the 1920s, required abandoning the idea of a unique chance event and considering a view of life emerging as the result of a long evolution…
POWERFUL KNOWLEDGE AS THE FUTURE OF SCHOOL CURRICULUM
2020
The global, social, economic and technological conditions of the 21st century are drastically changing the way societies and education policymakers understand the goals of education. Pedagogy has always been about how to pass on the knowledge, skills, values, and development of one's personality to the next generation, to create the conditions for growth that meet everyone’s needs and provide equal opportunities. However, today this issue has become more relevant than ever as the world is changing very rapidly, society, its values, and needs are changing, as confirmed by the UNESCO goals for 2030.Young, pointing out that in many countries education policy neglects what knowledge a student n…
Children’s Voices on Bullying in Kindergarten
2016
Research suggests that bullying does occur in kindergarten. The extent of bullying in Norway and other Scandinavian countries is estimated to be about 12 %. The purpose of this study is to investigate children’s understanding and experiences of bullying. We use a qualitative approach and have conducted individual interviews and focus group interviews with a total of 31 children, 5 year-olds, in 4 different kindergartens. Additionally, observations were made of 4–5 year-olds in the same kindergartens, 142 children in total. The results show that the children describe bullying as doing or saying “something mean”. Exclusion from play is what all the children fear the most. This study shows tha…
Education in a crisis. Italy within southern Europe: Trends and the way forward
2016
Access to Higher Education: An Instrument for Fair Societies?
2019
Access to higher education (HE) has a long history. To offer a view on the current debates and worldwide issues regarding access to HE, this editorial depicts how the control of educational access has historically been used as an instrument of governance at the interface of two processes: social stratification and the territorialisation of politics. Access to HE has remained embedded in these large structural processes even though HE has expanded from a highly elitist institution into mass education systems with equity of educational opportunities having become a desirable goal across societies. Analysing these processes helps understand the complex mechanisms producing inequalities in HE t…
Institutional Functions as a Theoretical Nexus and Measurement Target in Sociology of Education
2017
The paper is devoted to methodological aspects of the study of institutional functions of education as one of the basic theoretical constructs of contemporary sociology of education. The author argues that the elaboration into the function problem also provides a direction for social-practical outputs of this branch of sociology, conceptual ground for its own theoretical, revitalizing its connection with general sociology. Without such elaboration, the author assumes, most of theoretical and empirical studies and measurements conducted by sociologists are doomed to thematic fragmentation, have slim chances to contribute to a shared sociological vision of education, delineate the area of ins…
