Effect of sodium bicarbonate and beta-alanine supplementation on maximal sprint swimming

2013

Background. This study examined the effect of simultaneous supplementation of extracellular buffer sodium bicarbonate (SB) and intracellular buffer beta-alanine (BA) on maximal sprint swimming. Methods. Thirteen competitive male swimmers completed 4 different treatments (placebo [PL], SB, BA + PL, and BA + SB) in a crossover procedure. PL or SB supplementation (0.3 g/kg body weight) was ingested 60 min before two maximal 100-m freestyle swims that were performed with a passive recovery of 12-min between each swim. Because of the known long washout period for carnosine, four weeks of BA supplementation (4.8 g per day) was started after the first week of PL or SB supplementation and performan…

Percutaneous Stone Manipulation

1981

Percutaneous stone manipulation by direct ultrasound disintegration, extraction or chemolysis was done on 34 patients. A total of 15 patients presented with an operatively established nephrostomy, while percutaneous nephrostomy and subsequent dilation of the nephrostomy channel were done in 19. The rate of complete stone clearance was 19 of 20 stones after percutaneous nephrostomy and 8 of 16 stones in the group with an operatively established nephrostomy. The primary goal, to remove obstructing pelvic stones, was achieved in all cases. There were no untoward side effects, such as back pressure damage owing to flushing of the collecting system during ultrasound disintegration, or persistent…

PO-0322 The Effective Dose Of Sodium Bicarbonate In Severe Acute Dehydration And Metabolic Acidosis Due To Acute Diarrhoea In Children

2014

Background Still exist controversies about sodium bicarbonate (SB) effectiveness in metabolic acidosis (MA). The SB dose finally remain at discretion of physician. Aims Proving SB efficiency in severe acute dehydration (SAD) with MA secondary to acute diarrhoea (AD) in children. Methods Retrospective study conducted between May–September 2013, in 0–5 years old patients hospitalised for AD with SAD and MA. We chose the propitious age group and season for acute gastrointestinal pathology. We considered SAD loss >10% of body weight and severe MA pH Results In A Group, at admission, 57,14% presented pH 15; at 4 H, all presented alkalosis. In B Group, at admission, 50% presented severe MA; at 1 …

pH and salivary sodium bicarbonate during the administration protocol for methotrexate in children with leukemia

2007

Objective: To analyze the behavior of pH and sodium bicarbonate (NAHCO3) in the saliva of patients with leukemia during the administration protocol for Methotrexate (Mtx). Materials and Methods: A controlled clinical essay was carried out on 23 patients between 4 and 18 years of age with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Sampling was carried out at To : basal condition; T1 : 12 hours after intravenous administration of sodium bicarbonate, before administering Mtx and T2 : 3 hours after administering Mtx, the time of maximum concentration. Chiron-Diagnostic 378® equipment was used to determine pH and sodium bicarbonate. The data was interpreted using Analysis of Variance at the 5% sign…
