Abstract The influence of sodium chloride on the water holding capacity of meat is well known and described in literature. An increase in water holding capacity is associated with an increase in the swelling pressure in the protein matrix. A novel device was used to measure the swelling pressure during brine salting of muscle cylinders (40 × 50 mm), in different NaCl brine concentrations (2.5 to 25%) over 6 days at 4 °C. Two procedures based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) and stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) in combination with micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC)--diode array detection (DAD) were compared for the simultaneous extraction of acrinathrin, bitertanol, cyproconazole, fludioxonil, flutriafol, myclobutanil, pyriproxyfen, and tebuconazole in lettuce, tomato, grape, and strawberry. Isolation and partial characterization of uronic acid-containing glycoproteins from Mucor rouxii.

Five different fractions containing uronic acids associated with protein were isolated from the cytoplasm of the filamentous form of Mucor rouxii. A signle fraction was isolated from the cell wall by hot sodium dodecyl sulfate followed by ion exchange column chromatography. Two cytoplasmic entities (peaks I and II) were not adsorbed to DEAE Bio-Gel A. The molecular mass of peaks I to V ranged from 16.5 to 210 kDa. The protein-uronic acid ratios were different for each fraction. The cell wall fraction showed a molecular mass of 16.5 kDa, similar to that of peak II but with differences in chromatographic behavior and protein-uronic acid ratio. Vacuum-assisted impregnation of pectinmethylesterase (PME) solution has been recognized as an efficient pretreatment to improve the firmness of heat-treated fruit. An extracellular alkaline protease from an alkalophilic bacterium, Bacillus cereus, was produced in a large amount by the method of extractive fermentation. The protease is thermostable, pH tolerant, and compatible with commercial laundry detergents. The protease purified and characterized in this study was found to be superior to endogenous protease already present in commercial laundry detergents. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity by ammonium sulfate precipitation, concentration by ultrafiltration, anion-exchange chromatography, and gel filtration. Abstract The influence of the co-surfactant on physicochemical properties of w/o soybean oil microemulsions (MEs) has been studied. In spite of the similarity in phase diagrams, the MEs display remarkable differences when examined by electrical conductivity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and linear voltammetry. When different short-chain alcohols were employed as co-surfactants, together with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant, the DLS results indicated the systems to be monodisperse. Abstract A partial least squares (PLS) Fourier transform Raman spectrometry procedure based on the measurement of solid samples contained inside standard glass vials, has been developed for direct and reagent-free determination of sodium saccharin and sodium cyclamate in table top sweeteners. Abstract The use of a micellar solution as a means for improving the colorimetric determination of arylamines by diazotization and coupling is studied. Sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), Triton X-100 (TX-100) and N -cetylpyridinium chloride (NCPC), together with the diazotizable substances aniline and sulphanilic acid and the coupling agents 1-naphthylamine and N -(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine are used as model compounds. The protonation constants of the dyes follow the order SDS>H 2 O>TX-100>NCPC. Use of an enzyme-assisted method to improve protein extraction from olive leaves.

The improvement of protein extraction from olive leaves using an enzyme-assisted protocol has been investigated. Using a cellulase enzyme (Celluclast® 1.5L), different parameters that affect the extraction process, such as the influence and amount of organic solvent, enzyme amount, pH and extraction temperature and time, were optimised. The influence of these factors was examined using the standard Bradford assay and the extracted proteins were characterised by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE).
