Gold nanoparticles induce cytotoxicity in the alveolar type-II cell lines A549 and NCIH441.

2009

Abstract Background During the last years engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have been extensively used in different technologies and consequently many questions have arisen about the risk and the impact on human health following exposure to nanoparticles. Nevertheless, at present knowledge about the cytotoxicity induced by NPs is still largely incomplete. In this context, we have investigated the cytotoxicity induced by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which differed in size and purification grade (presence or absence of sodium citrate residues on the particle surface) in vitro, in the human alveolar type-II (ATII)-like cell lines A549 and NCIH441. Results We found that the presence of sodium citra…

Long-term follow-up and novel genotype-phenotype analysis of monozygotic twins with ATP1A3 mutation in Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood-2

2020

Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) is a rare disorder characterized by frequent, transient attacks of hemiplegia involving either side of the body or both in association to several other disturbances including dystonic spells, abnormal ocular movements, autonomic manifestations, epileptic seizures and cognitive impairment. The clinical manifestations usually start before the age of 18 months. Two forms of the disorder known as AHC-1 (MIM#104290) and AHC-2 (MIM#614820) depends on mutations in ATP1A2 and ATP1A3 genes respectively, with over 75% of AHC caused by a mutation in the ATP1A3 gene. Herewith, we report serial clinical follow-up data of monozygotic (MZ) twin sisters, who presen…

Metabolic aspects of the rhythmogenesis inAplysia pacemaker neurons

1973

Completely isolatedAplysia pacemaker neurons were used to investigate mechanisms of endogenous electrical rhythmicity. This preparation allows the study of pure pacemaker activity free from synaptic, ephaptic and/or humoral influences from the surrounding cells. The effect of some substances quite different in their mode of biochemical action were tested: sodium iodoacetate, phloridzin, dinitrophenol, heavy water, and ouabain. Each of these substances suppressed the spontaneous spike activity without any marked depolarizing or hyperpolarizing effect. Spontaneous spike activity of the neurons silenced after addition of one of these substances reappeared after addition of glucose. The restori…

The efficacy of 8% Arginine-CaCO3 applications on dentine hypersensitivity following periodontal therapy: a clinical and scanning electron microscopi…

2013

Objectives: Periodontal therapy is one of the etiological factors of dentine hypersensitivity (DH). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of %8Arginine-CaCO3 on DH that affects patients after periodontal treatment. Study design: Seventy-one teeth from the volunteers (n=36) with history of DH caused by periodontal therapy were included in this study, and randomly divided into two groups: group-1, who received 8%Arginine-CaCO3 and group-2, who received 1.23%NaF-gel. The clinical indices were recorded at first visit.DH was evaluated by using tactile, air-blast, and thermal stimuli. The subject’s response was recorded at baseline, immediately (Day-0) and one month after the application. Res…

Root canal disinfection of immature dog teeth with apical periodontitis: Comparison of three different protocols.

2014

Objectives: The present in vivo study was designed to assess the efficacy of 3 root canal disinfection protocols in immature dog teeth with apical periodontitis (AP). Material and Methods: Forty immature premolars with pulp necrosis and AP of five Beagle dogs were used. Three experimental disinfection protocols were established. After irrigation with 40 ml 5.25% sodium hypochlorite using the Endovac system, in Group 1 canals were flushed with QMix solution; in Group 2, canals were flushed with QMix solution and 2% chlorhexidine gel dressing was placed for two weeks; and in Group 3, triantibiotic paste dressing was placed for two weeks. Canals were sampled after periapical lesions were radio…

Functional Magnetic Mesoporous Silica Microparticles Capped with an Azo-Derivative: A Promising Colon Drug Delivery Device

2018

[EN] Magnetic micro-sized mesoporous silica particles were used for the preparation of a gated material able to release an entrapped cargo in the presence of an azo-reducing agent and, to some extent, at acidic pH. The magnetic mesoporous microparticles were loaded with safranin O and the external surface was functionalized with an azo derivative 1 (bearing a carbamate linkage) yielding solid S1. Aqueous suspensions of S1 at pH 7.4 showed negligible safranin O release due to the presence of the bulky azo derivative attached onto the external surface of the inorganic scaffold. However, in the presence of sodium dithionite (azoreductive agent), a remarkable safranin O delivery was observed. A…

Aceclofenac versus naproxen in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis: A double-blind, controlled study

1994

Abstract The efficacy and tolerability of aceclofenac and naproxen sodium in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) were evaluated and compared in this double-blind, multicenter, controlled study. Of the 130 patients who entered the study, 126 patients met the inclusion criteria. Efficacy was evaluated at baseline, 15 days, and 1, 2, and 3 months using a visual analog scale for spontaneous pain, a zero to three-point scale for pain on movement and pain at rest, and measurements of chest expansion, hand-to-floor distance, Schober's test, and normal daily activities. No significant between-group differences were seen for any of the variables at baseline, except hand-to-floor distance. B…
