Tutorial on dynamic analysis of the Costas loop

2016

Abstract Costas loop is a classical phase-locked loop (PLL) based circuit for carrier recovery and signal demodulation. The PLL is an automatic control system that adjusts the phase of a local signal to match the phase of the input reference signal. This tutorial is devoted to the dynamic analysis of the Costas loop. In particular the acquisition process is analyzed. Acquisition is most conveniently described by a number of frequency and time parameters such as lock-in range, lock-in time, pull-in range, pull-in time, and hold-in range. While for the classical PLL equations all these parameters have been derived (many of them are approximations, some even crude approximations), this has not…

Rotation estimation and vanishing point extraction by omnidirectional vision in urban environment

2012

International audience; Rotation estimation is a fundamental step for various robotic applications such as automatic control of ground/aerial vehicles, motion estimation and 3D reconstruction. However it is now well established that traditional navigation equipments, such as global positioning systems (GPSs) or inertial measurement units (IMUs), suffer from several disadvantages. Hence, some vision-based works have been proposed recently. Whereas interesting results can be obtained, the existing methods have non-negligible limitations such as a difficult feature matching (e.g. repeated textures, blur or illumination changes) and a high computational cost (e.g. analyze in the frequency domai…

Ant Colony Optimisation-Based Classification Using Two-Dimensional Polygons

2016

The application of Ant Colony Optimization to the field of classification has mostly been limited to hybrid approaches which attempt at boosting the performance of existing classifiers (such as Decision Trees and Support Vector Machines (SVM)) — often through guided feature reductions or parameter optimizations.

Advanced teleoperation and control system for industrial robots based on augmented virtuality and haptic feedback

2021

[EN] There are some industrial tasks that are still mainly performed manually by human workers due to their complexity, which is the case of surface treatment operations (such as sanding, deburring, finishing, grinding, polishing, etc.) used to repair defects. This work develops an advanced teleoperation and control system for industrial robots in order to assist the human operator to perform the mentioned tasks. On the one hand, the controlled robotic system provides strength and accuracy, holding the tool, keeping the right tool orientation and guaranteeing a smooth approach to the workpiece. On the other hand, the advanced teleoperation provides security and comfort to the user when perf…

Teleoperation of industrial robot manipulators based on augmented reality

2020

[EN] This research develops a novel teleoperation for robot manipulators based on augmented reality. The proposed interface is equipped with full capabilities in order to replace the classical teach pendant of the robot for carrying out teleoperation tasks. The proposed interface is based on an augmented reality headset for projecting computer-generated graphics onto the real environment and a gamepad to interact with the computer-generated graphics and provide robot commands. In order to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed method, several usability tests were conducted using a 6R industrial robot manipulator in order to compare the proposed interface and the conventional teach pendant…

Geometrical deviation of end-of-life parts as a consequence of reshaping by single point incremental forming

2021

AbstractPutting in place circular economy strategies is an urgent challenge to face. In this scenario, manufacturing processes play a relevant role as efficient material reuse enabler. Scientists have to make an effort either to find new process or to rethink old process to reprocess end-of-life (EoL) component to recover both material and functions. In this paper, single point incremental forming (SPIF) process is used for reshaping sheet metal EoL components. The entire process chain was replicated including both deep drawing process (to imitate the end-of-life component) as well as SPIF operations (to obtain the reshaped components). The geometrical deviation as a consequence of SPIF ope…

Intelligent virtual manufacturing cell formation in cloud-based design and manufacturing

2018

Abstract Cloud-based design and manufacturing (CBDM) can presumably stimulate greater intelligence in cloud-based models. This paper assumes that cloud-based design for cellular manufacturing can be referred to as a multiscale, uncertain, and dynamic service-oriented network where a set of CAD parts, modelled by set of features, can be manufactured in intelligent virtual manufacturing cells under certain constraints. Using the concepts of the holon and the attractor, integrating the uncertainty in the modelling of part design and part–manufacturing network, an approach to address intelligent virtual manufacturing cell formation in CBDM is proposed. The powerful role of the CAD features is e…

Advancing manufacturing systems research at NAMRC 46

2018

Research on manufacturing systems is further enriched and becomes stronger at the 46th North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC 46) at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA. Advancing manufacturing systems is more prevalent than before due to recent industrial revolution (or Industry 4.0), continuous business decentralisation and needs for better overall resource efficiency and effectiveness. Manufacturers are competing in a global, dynamic marketplace that demands excellence in quality and service, throughput, innovativeness, agility in production, short response time to changing markets, and tight profitable margins. In the 21st century, manufacturing will be g…

Summarizing Large Scale 3D Mesh

2018

International audience; Recent progress in 3D sensor devices and in semantic mapping allows to build very rich HD 3D maps very useful for autonomous navigation and localization. However , these maps are particularly huge and require important memory capabilities as well computational resources. In this paper, we propose a new method for summarizing a 3D map (Mesh) as a set of compact spheres in order to facilitate its use by systems with limited resources (smartphones, robots, UAVs, ...). This vision-based summarizing process is applied in a fully automatic way using jointly photometric, geometric and semantic information of the studied environment. The main contribution of this research is…

Machine Learning Approaches for Activity Recognition and/or Activity Prediction in Locomotion Assistive Devices—A Systematic Review

2020

Locomotion assistive devices equipped with a microprocessor can potentially automatically adapt their behavior when the user is transitioning from one locomotion mode to another. Many developments in the field have come from machine learning driven controllers on locomotion assistive devices that recognize/predict the current locomotion mode or the upcoming one. This review synthesizes the machine learning algorithms designed to recognize or to predict a locomotion mode in order to automatically adapt the behavior of a locomotion assistive device. A systematic review was conducted on the Web of Science and MEDLINE databases (as well as in the retrieved papers) to identify articles published…
