Visual data mining with self-organising maps for ventricular fibrillation analysis

2012

Detection of ventricular fibrillation (VF) at an early stage is being deeply studied in order to lower the risk of sudden death and allows the specialist to have greater reaction time to give the patient a good recovering therapy. Some works are focusing on detecting VF based on numerical analysis of time-frequency distributions, but in general the methods used do not provide insight into the problem. However, this study proposes a new methodology in order to obtain information about this problem. This work uses a supervised self-organising map (SOM) to obtain visually information among four important groups of patients: VF (ventricular fibrillation), VT (ventricular tachycardia), HP (healt…

Subtle Increases in Interletter Spacing Facilitate the Encoding of Words during Normal Reading

2012

BackgroundSeveral recent studies have revealed that words presented with a small increase in interletter spacing are identified faster than words presented with the default interletter spacing (i.e., w a t e r faster than water). Modeling work has shown that this advantage occurs at an early encoding level. Given the implications of this finding for the ease of reading in the new digital era, here we examined whether the beneficial effect of small increases in interletter spacing can be generalized to a normal reading situation.MethodologyWe conducted an experiment in which the participant's eyes were monitored when reading sentences varying in interletter spacing: i) sentences were present…

A multilevel statistical toolkit to study animal social networks: the Animal Network Toolkit Software (ANTs) R package

2020

Abstract The possible role played by individual attributes, sociodemographic characteristics and/or ecological pressures in the interaction between animals and the development of social relationships between them is of great interest in animal ecology and evolutionary biology. Social Network Analysis is an ideal tool to study these types of questions. The Animal Network Toolkit Software (ANTs) R package was specifically developed to provide all the different social network analysis techniques currently used in the study of animal social networks. This global package enables users to (1) compute global, polyadic and nodal network measures; (2) perform data randomisation: data stream and netw…

Comparison of basis functions for 3D PET reconstruction using a Monte Carlo system matrix.

2012

In emission tomography, iterative statistical methods are accepted as the reconstruction algorithms that achieve the best image quality. The accuracy of these methods relies partly on the quality of the system response matrix (SRM) that characterizes the scanner. The more physical phenomena included in the SRM, the higher the SRM quality, and therefore higher image quality is obtained from the reconstruction process. High-resolution small animal scanners contain as many as 103?104 small crystal pairs, while the field of view (FOV) is divided into hundreds of thousands of small voxels. These two characteristics have a significant impact on the number of elements to be calculated in the SRM. …

Notice of Violation of IEEE Publication Principles: New Delay-Dependent Exponential $H_{\infty}$ Synchronization for Uncertain Neural Networks With M…

2010

This paper establishes an exponential H infin synchronization method for a class of uncertain master and slave neural networks (MSNNs) with mixed time delays, where the mixed delays comprise different neutral, discrete, and distributed time delays. The polytopic and the norm-bounded uncertainties are separately taken into consideration. An appropriate discretized Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and some free-weighting matrices are utilized to establish some delay-dependent sufficient conditions for designing delayed state-feedback control as a synchronization law in terms of linear matrix inequalities under less restrictive conditions. The controller guarantees the exponential H infin synchr…

Asynchronously switched control of discrete impulsive switched systems with time delays

2013

This paper is concerned with the stabilization problem for a class of uncertain discrete impulsive switched delay systems under asynchronous switching. The so-called asynchronous switching means that the switches between the candidate controllers and system modes are asynchronous. By using the average dwell time (ADT) approach, sufficient conditions for the existence of an asynchronously switched controller is derived such that the resulting closed-loop system is exponentially stable. The desired controller gains and the admissible switching signals are obtained in terms of a set of matrix inequalities. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Digitizing data acquisition and time-of-flight pulse processing for ToF-ERDA

2016

A versatile system to capture and analyze signals from multi channel plate (MCP) based time-of-flight detectors and ionization based energy detectors such as silicon diodes and gas ionization chambers (GIC) is introduced. The system is based on commercial digitizers and custom software. It forms a part of a ToF-ERDA spectrometer, which has to be able to detect recoil atoms of many different species and energies. Compared to the currently used analogue electronics the digitizing system provides comparable time-of-flight resolution and improved hydrogen detection efficiency, while allowing the operation of the spectrometer be studied and optimized after the measurement. The hardware, data acq…

A simple timestamping data acquisition system for ToF-ERDA

2015

A new data acquisition system, ToF-DAQ, has been developed for a ToF-ERDA telescope and other ToF-E and ToF-ToF measurement systems. ToF-DAQ combines an analogue electronics front-end to asynchronous time stamped data acquisition by means of a FPGA device. Coincidences are sought solely in software based on the timestamps. Timestamping offers more options for data analysis as coincidence events can be built also in offline analysis. The system utilises a National Instruments R-series FPGA device and a Windows PC as a host computer. Both the FPGA code and the host software were developed using the National Instruments LabVIEW graphical programming environment. Up to eight NIM ADCs can be han…

Multi-label Classification Using Stacked Hierarchical Dirichlet Processes with Reduced Sampling Complexity

2018

Nonparametric topic models based on hierarchical Dirichlet processes (HDPs) allow for the number of topics to be automatically discovered from the data. The computational complexity of standard Gibbs sampling techniques for model training is linear in the number of topics. Recently, it was reduced to be linear in the number of topics per word using a technique called alias sampling combined with Metropolis Hastings (MH) sampling. We propose a different proposal distribution for the MH step based on the observation that distributions on the upper hierarchy level change slower than the document-specific distributions at the lower level. This reduces the sampling complexity, making it linear i…
