Resonance properties of different neuronal populations in the immature mouse neocortex

In vivo recordings in the immature neocortex revealed spontaneous and sensory-driven oscillatory activity from delta (0.5-4 Hz) to gamma (30-100 Hz) frequencies. In order to investigate whether the resonance properties of distinct neuronal populations in the immature neocortex contribute to these network oscillations, we performed whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from visually identified neurons in tangential and coronal neocortical slices from postnatal day (P)0-P7 C57Bl/6 mice. A time-frequency representation of sound is commonly obtained through the Short-Time Fourier Transform. Identifying and extracting the prominent frequency components of the spectrogram is important for sinusoidal modeling and sound processing. Borrowing a known image processing technique, known as seam carving, we propose an algorithm to track and extract the sinusoidal components from the sound spectrogram. Experiments show how this technique is well suited for sound whose prominent frequency components vary both in amplitude and in frequency. Cultured Ito cells of rat liver express the alpha 2-macroglobulin gene.

Ito cells were isolated from rat liver and kept in culture for up to 13 days. The capability of the Ito cells to synthesize a2-macroglobulin was analyzed at different times after isolation and by pulse-chase experiments. Newly synthesized a2-macroglobulin was determined by immunoprecipitation followed by sodium dodecyl sulfate/ polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and fluorography. a2-Macroglobulin synthesis was hardly detectable in Ito cells and their media 3 days after plating. However, 5 - 11 days after the isolation of the cells, increasing amounts of a2-macroglobulin were synthesized. Wavelength conversion and temporal compression of a pulse train using a dispersion oscillating fiber

International audience; We demonstrate the generation of a picosecond pulse train taking advantage of the cross gain occurring in a dispersion oscillating fibre. The resulting frequency-converted signal is detuned by more than 20 nm from the pump and can be temporally compressed by a factor 2 compared to the input sinusoidal pump wave.

Taxonomy and palaeobiogeography of the Cenozoic Euro-Mediterranean rissoid gastropod Galeodinopsis and its relationship with close genera

The investigation of the Late Paleogene to Late Neogene species of rissoid gastropod Galeodinopsis in the Euro-Mediterranean area has supported the hypothesis that this genus is an intermediate form between two well-known rissoids, Alvinia and Manzonia. We recognized four species of Galeodinopsis: G. biangulata, G. germanica sp. nov., G. semperi (new name for Rissoa duboisii), and G. tiberiana. The oldest (very Late Eocene/Oligocene) representatives of Galeodinopsis, G. biangulata, and G. semperi, share similar shell shape and microsculpture with Alvinia.
