Targeted delivery of hydrogen for the bioremediation of aquifers contaminated by dissolved chlorinated compounds.
2019
Dihydrogen (H2) gas injection is a promising option to enhance the reductive biodehalogenation of contaminants in groundwater. However, it is challenging to ensure its targeted delivery at the right places in plumes, and for the long times required for bioremediation. In this paper, the ability of surfactant foam to retain H2 in the saturated zone and to enhance its release in the dissolved form was compared to traditional biosparging. H2 gas was injected, either alone, or as foam, in a 2D saturated cell packed with glass beads. This cell was continuously flushed with deoxygenated water to mimic aquifer circulation, and H2 was studied both in terms of gas distribution in the cell and dissol…
Anthropogenic lead distribution in soils under arable land and permanent grassland estimated by Pb isotopic compositions
2008
International audience; The role of land use on fate of metals in soils is poorly understood. In this work, we studied the incorporation of lead in two neighboring soils with comparable pedogenesis but under long-term different agricultural management. Distributions of anthropogenic Pb were assessed from concentrations and isotopic compositions determined on bulk horizon samples, systematical 5–10 cm increment samples, and on 24-h EDTA extracts. Minor amounts of anthropogenic lead were detected until 1-m depth under permanent grassland, linked to high earthworm activity. In arable land, exogenous Pb predominantly accumulated at depths <60 cm. Although the proximity between the two sites ens…
ATR–FTIR Spectral Analysis and Soluble Components of PM10 And PM2.5 Particulate Matter over the Urban Area of Palermo (Italy) during Normal Days and …
2019
Several epidemiological studies have shown a close relationship between the mass of particulate matter (PM) and its effects on human health. This study reports the identification of inorganic and organic components by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis in PM10 and PM2.5 filters collected from three air quality monitoring stations in the city of Palermo (Sicily, Italy) during non-Saharan dust events and Saharan events. It also provides information on the abundance and types of water-soluble species. ATR-FTIR analysis identified sulfate, ammonium, nitrate, and carbonate matter characterized by vibrational frequencies at 603, 615, 670, and …
Microbiology and atmospheric processes: biological, physical and chemical characterization of aerosol particles
2008
Abstract. The interest in bioaerosols has traditionally been linked to health hazards for humans, animals and plants. However, several components of bioaerosols exhibit physical properties of great significance for cloud processes, such as ice nucleation and cloud condensation. To gain a better understanding of their influence on climate, it is therefore important to determine the composition, concentration, seasonal fluctuation, regional diversity and evolution of bioaerosols. In this paper, we will review briefly the existing techniques for detection, quantification, physical and chemical analysis of biological particles, attempting to bridge physical, chemical and biological methods for …
High-resolution spectroscopy and analysis of the nu3/2nu4 dyad of CF4
2011
International audience; CF4 is a strong greenhouse gas of both anthropogenic and natural origin [D.R. Worton et al., Environ. Sci. Technol. 41, 2184 (2007)]. However, high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of this molecule has received only a limited interest up to now. Until very recently, the public databases only contained cross-sections for this species, but no detailed line list. We reinvestigate here the strongly absorbing ν3 region around 7.8 μm. New Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra up to a maximal resolution of 0.0025 cm−1 have been recorded: (i) room-temperature spectra in a static cell and (ii) a supersonic expansion jet spectrum at a 23 K estimated temperature. Following …
Applications of a new set of methane line parameters to the modeling of Titan's spectrum in the 1.58 μm window
2012
International audience; In this paper we apply a recently released set of methane line parameters (Wang et al., 2011) to the modeling of Titan spectra in the 1.58 mu m window at both low and high spectral resolution. We first compare the methane absorption based on this new set of methane data to that calculated from the methane absorption coefficients derived in situ from DISR/Huygens (Tomasko et al., 2008a; Karkoschka and Tomasko, 2010) and from the band models of Irwin et al. (2006) and Karkoschka and Tomasko (2010). The Irwin et al. (2006) band model clearly underestimates the absorption in the window at temperature-pressure conditions representative of Titan's troposphere, while the Ka…
Global modeling of the lower three polyads of PH_{3} Preliminary results
2009
International audience; In order to model the high-resolution infrared spectrum of the phosphine molecule in the 3 mu m region, a global approach involving the lower three polyads of the molecule (Dyad, Pentad and Octad) as been applied using an effective hamiltonian in the form of irreducible tensors. This model allowed to describe all the 15 vibrational states involved and to consider explicitly all relevant ro-vibrational interactions that cannot be accounted for by conventional perturbation approaches. 2245 levels (up to J=14) observed through transitions arising from 34 cold and hot bands including all available existing data as well as new experimental data have been fitted simultaneo…
ERA5-Land: A state-of-the-art global reanalysis dataset for land applications
2021
Framed within the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) of the European Commission, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is producing an enhanced global dataset for the land component of the fifth generation of European ReAnalysis (ERA5), hereafter referred to as ERA5-Land. Once completed, the period covered will span from 1950 to the present, with continuous updates to support land monitoring applications. ERA5-Land describes the evolution of the water and energy cycles over land in a consistent manner over the production period, which, among others, could be used to analyse trends and anomalies. This is achieved through global high-resolution numerical integrat…
High spatio- temporal resolution land surface temperature mission - a copernicus candidate mission in support of agricultural monitoring
2018
International audience; Evolution in the Copernicus Space Component (CSC) is foreseen in the mid-2020s to meet priority Copernicus user needs not addressed by the existing infrastructure, and/or to reinforce services by monitoring capability in the thematic domains of CO 2 , polar, and agriculture/forestry. This evolution will be synergetic with the enhanced continuity of services for the next generation of CSC. The “High Spatio-Temporal Resolution Land Surface Temperature Monitoring (LSTM) Mission”, identified as one of the CSC Expansion High Priority Candidate Missions (HPCM), currently undergoes an ESA preparatory phase (phase A/B1) study to establish mission feasibility. The LSTM missio…
Estimating high resolution evapotranspiration from disaggregated thermal images
2016
Abstract Accurate evapotranspiration (ET) estimations based on surface energy balance from remote sensing require information in the thermal infrared (TIR) domain, normally provided with an insufficient spatial resolution. In order to estimate ET in heterogeneous agricultural areas, we inspect in this paper the use of disaggregation techniques applied to two different sensors, such as MODIS (daily revisit cycle and 1 km spatial resolution in the TIR domain) and Spot 5 (5 days revisit cycle and 10 m spatial resolution in the VNIR bands but no TIR band). Spot 5 images were used as a proxy for upcoming Sentinel-2. The Simplified Two-Source Energy Balance (STSEB) model was used for the estimati…
