Pseudomembranous invasive tracheobronchial aspergillosis.

2004

Invasive aspergillus tracheobronchitis is a rare infectious complication in severely immunocompromised patients who are generally neutropenic with haematological diseases, AIDS, or after solid organ transplantation. However, a few cases have been reported with no apparent severe compromise in the host defences.1 Aspergillus tracheobronchitis varies from localised tracheobronchitis …

A rare case of pedunculated bronchial hemangioma

2009

We describe a rare case of pedunculated endobronchial hemangioma observed in a 60 years old patient complaining of chronic productive cough and accessional dyspnea which had been progressively worsening over 20 years. The lesion was first noticed at fiberoptic bronchoscopy; then computed tomography scan was performed and integrated with tridimensional reconstruction techniques. Pathology showed the picture of a vascular neoplasm, compatible with capillary hemangioma. The lesion was submitted to laser-assisted endoscopic removal in order to relieve the obstruction, leading to remission of symptoms.

Measuring intrinsic thickness of rough membranes: application to nanofibrillated cellulose films

2015

Adequate measurement of thickness of sheet-like materials or membranes is most important for quantifying their properties such as density, barrier properties and mechanical strength. Depending on the surface roughness of the membrane, the thickness measured by standard micrometre devices (apparent thickness) may considerably overestimate the actual geometrical mean thickness (intrinsic thickness) required for such purposes. In this work, we present a method for correcting the measured apparent thickness value of thin membranes for their surface roughness, thereby obtaining an improved estimate of the intrinsic thickness. The surface roughness data required for the correction can be obtained…

The impact of effluents of Pitkäranta pulp mill on the water quality of Lake Ladoga: a model study

1996

The aim of this study is to show the effects of the Pitkaranta pulp mill on the water quality of Northern Ladoga by using water quality models. The effluent loading of the pulp mill with its full production capacity is as follows: Water flow 85 000 m3 d−1 BOD5 2.4 t d−1 Suspended solids 4.1 t d−1 tot-N 330 kg d−1 tot-P 68 kg d−1 COD(Cr) 14.4 t d−1 Org. C 6 t d−1 Lignosulphonates 9.4 t d−1 Loadings of lignosulphonates and organic C are estimations. Lignosulphonate concentrations of 10.5 mg 1−1 have been reported in the region of Pitkaranta. The study area of northern Ladoga near the pulp mill was divided into three zones (I, II and III). The mean depth of each of them is considered as 10 m, …

KNOTS AND LINKS IN INTEGRABLE HAMILTONIAN SYSTEMS

1998

The main purpose of this paper is to prove that Bott integrable Hamiltonian flows and non-singular Morse-Smale flows are closely related. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of the knots and links formed by periodic orbits of Bott integrable Hamiltonians on the 3-sphere and on the solid torus. We also show that most of Fomenko's theory on the topology of the energy levels of Bott integrable Hamiltonians can be derived from Morgan's results on 3-manifolds that admit non-singular Morse-Smale flows.

Microwave-assisted extraction of pyrethroid insecticides from semi permeable membrane devices (SPMDs) used to indoor air monitoring

2006

Abstract A rapid and environmentally friendly methodology was developed for the extraction of pyrethroid insecticides from semi permeable membrane devices (SPMDs), in which they were preconcentrated in gas phase. The method was based on gas chromatography mass–mass spectrometry determination after a microwave-assisted extraction, in front of the widely employed dialysis method. SPMDs were extracted twice with 30 mL hexane:acetone, irradiated with 250 W power output, until 90 °C in 10 min, this temperature being held for another 10 min. Clean-up of the extracts was performed by acetonitrile–hexane partitioning and solid-phase extraction (SPE) with a combined cartridge of 2 g basic-alumina, d…

X-Ray and NMR Studies on Host-Guest Inclusion Complex Formation between Crown Ethers and Pyridinium Compounds

1998

Aromatic–aromatic, π–π, and cation–π interactions can be exploited in the preparation of molecular complexes between benzene-substituted crown ethers and pyridium cations. These complexes have been studied in the gas phase, in solution, and in the solid state; the structure of one of the complexes is depicted on the right.

Analysis of mycotoxins in barley using ultra high liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry: comparison of efficiency and efficacy of d…

2012

The effectiveness of four extraction methods (modified QuEChERS, matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD), solid-liquid extraction (SLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) clean-up) were evaluated for simultaneous determination of 32 mycotoxins produced by the genus Fusarium, Claviceps, Aspergillus, Penicillium and Alternaria in barley by ultra high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap(®) MS). The efficiency and efficacy of extraction methods were evaluated and compared in number of extracted mycotoxins and obtained recoveries. From the one point of view, QuEChERS procedure was fast and easy, as well as it was able to successfully extra…

Sensitive Monoclonal Antibody-Based Immunoassays for Kresoxim-methyl Analysis in QuEChERS-Based Food Extracts

2014

Kresoxim-methyl is nowadays widely used to combat a diversity of common diseases affecting high-value crops. In this article, we report the development and characterization of two novel immunoassays for the analysis of this pioneer strobilurin fungicide, and for the first time, a validation study with food samples was performed. A direct and an indirect competitive immunoassay based on a new anti-kresoxim-methyl monoclonal antibody were developed for sensitive and specific chemical analysis. Optimized assays showed limits of detection of 0.1 μg/L. Fruit and vegetable samples were extracted with acetonitrile by the QuEChERS procedure and analyzed by the developed immunoassays after a simple …
