Recent Advances in Sample Preparation for Pesticide Analysis

2012

Much progress has been made in pesticide analysis in the past decade. During this time, hyphenated techniques involving highly efficient separation with sensitive mass spectrometric detection have become the methods of choice. Even with such powerful instrumental techniques, a demanding task in pesticide residue analysis is the development of multiresidue methods for the determination of pesticides in air, water, soil, sediment, biota, and food. This chapter summarizes the analytical characteristics of the different methods of sample preparation for the determination of pesticide residues in a variety of food matrices, and surveys their recent applications in combination with gas chromatogr…

Monte Carlo Simulations of Surfaces and Interfaces in Materials

1996

Many applications of materials are controlled by their surface and interface properties. In particular, metallic alloys (but also mixed dielectric materials and amorphous polymer blends) are not homogeneously mixed on a microscopic length scale, although they are macroscopically homogeneous. Depending on the preparation of the sample, there exists a heterophase microstructure, with typical domain sizes, e.g. in the 1 to 102 µm range, separated by interfaces between them. The physical properties of such intrinsic interfaces (grain boundaries between small crystallites, antiphase domain boundaries in ordered alloys, Bloch walls in magnetic materials, etc.) are not only an important controllin…

Algunas reflexiones acerca de la stjue de 9 de julio de 2020 sobre los pactos novatorios en materia de cláusulas suelo

2021

The Sentence of the Court of Justice of the European Union of July 9, 2020 comes to answer the five questions that, in its preliminary question, the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 3 of Teruel asks about the validity of the new agreements in the context of the floor clauses, establishing jurisprudential doctrine on this matter about which our Supreme Court had previously ruled in its Judgments of October 16, 2017, in the sense of considering the agreed floor clause null as a consequence of the novation agreement and, subsequently, those of April 11, 2018 and September 13, 2018 in the opposite direction, declaring that the novation agreement was valid. It is a long-awaited and in…

POMOLOGICAL TRAITS, SENSORY CHARACTERISTICS, AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY IN FRUITS OF NINE LOQUAT CULTIVARS GROWN IN SICILY

2015

Loquat cultivation in Italy currently aims at offering a wider choice of cultivars to growers. The present study determined commercial quality, characterized the antioxidant capacity, and quantified the major bioactive compounds of some local ('BRT 20', 'Claudia', 'Nespolone di Trabia', 'Sanfilippara') and international ('Algerie', 'El Buenet', 'Bueno', 'Golden Nugget' and 'Peluche') cultivars. Fruit was harvested at commercial ripening and chemical-physical determinations of weight, diameters, skin and flesh color, soluble solid content, tritable acidity, antioxidant activity and polyphenol content, and sensory analyses were carried out. Data showed a large variability among genotypes and …

Solid-Phase Extraction and Clean-Up Procedures in Pharmaceutical Analysis

2012

Solid-phase extraction (SPE) using small cartridges filled with sorbents of a small particle size has rapidly established itself as an important sample clean-up technique. It has prospered at the expense of liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), which is considered labor intensive and frequently plagued by problems, such as emulsion formation and use of large volumes of hazardous solvents. A remarkable characteristic of SPE is its easy adaptation to on-line mode by column-switching techniques; switching can be effected manually or by automated controllers. The same analyte/sorbent interactions that are exploited in liquid chromatography (LC) are of use in SPE, but particle sizes employed are great…

Factors Influencing Digitalis Obscura Mesophyll Protoplast Development

1988

In a previous work (1), we found that a combination of liquid-over-agar-solidified MS (2) modified medium was superior to either all liquid or all solid medium for culture of Digitalis obscura L. mesophyll protoplasts. In order to achieve optimum culture conditions we now report on the influence of a different gelling agent (agarose) as well as the effect of several nutrient media on D. obscura mesophyll protoplasts development.

Cation binding resorcinarene bis-crowns: the effect of lower rim alkyl chain length on crystal packing and solid lipid nanoparticles

2012

A group of seven resorcinarene bis-crown ethers (CNBC5) with two polyether bridges at the upper rim and either propyl, butyl, pentyl, heptyl, nonyl, decyl or undecyl groups at the lower rim were synthesized and their binding properties with Cs+ were investigated by NMR titration. The bis-crowns form 1:2 complexes with Cs+ with binding constants of logK 4–5. Crystal structures of bis-crowns and their Cs+ and K+ complexes were studied and different packing motifs were found depending on the alkyl chain length. Short ethyl, propyl and butyl alkyl chains gave a layer or pillar packing where the polar and non-polar regions cannot be distinguished, whereas longer pentyl and decyl chains formed bi…

Novel cationic solid-lipid nanoparticles as non-viral vectors for gene delivery.

2007

In this paper, the suitability of novel cationic solid-lipid nanoparticles (SLN) as a nonviral transfection agent for gene delivery was investigated. SLN were produced by using the microemulsion method and Compritol ATO 888 as matrix lipid, dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide as charge carrier and Pluronic F68 as surfactant. Obtained nanoparticles were approximately 120 nm in size and positively charged, with a zeta potential value equal to +45 mV in twice-distilled water. Cationic SLN were able to form stable complexes with DNA and to protect DNA against DNase I digestion. The SLN-DNA complexes were characterized by mean diameter and zeta potential measurements. In vitro studies on human l…
