Temperature dependent properties of environmentally important synthetic musks.

Environmental fate determining physical properties including their temperature dependence for five nitro musks and for seven polycyclic musks were estimated. The properties evaluated were vapor pressure in a solid and liquid state (PS and PL), solubility in water (S), Henry's law coefficient (H = PL/S) and log octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW). Gas chromatography for starting values of vapor pressure estimation and HPLC experiments at 5-20 degrees C for comparison of the theoretical versus experimental solubilities in water were performed. Zinc oxide was added during hydration of alite (C3S) as an analogue for solidification/stabilization by cement of metal-bearing hazardous waste. Curing of samples was stopped at various intervals between 8 h and 100 d, and the reaction products were analyzed by both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS at Zn, Ca, and Si K-edges). Calcium zincate hydrate (CaZn2(OH)6 x 2H2O) initially formed together with calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) vanishes from X-ray diffractograms after 14 d, and no other crystalline Zn-bearing phase could be detected thereafter. Technical advance: Soluble OX40 molecule mimics regulatory T cell modulatory activity on FCεRI-dependent mast cell degranulation

ABSTRACT Tregs play a central role in modulating FcɛRI-dependent MC effector functions in the course of the allergic response. Cellular interaction depends on the constitutive expression of OX40 on Tregs and the OX40L counterpart on MCs. Study of OX40L signaling on MCs is hampered by the need of a highly purified molecule, which triggers OX40L specifically. We now report that sOX40 mimics the physiological activity of Treg interaction by binding to activated MCs. From C–S–H to C–A–S–H: Experimental study and thermodynamic modelling

Abstract It has long been known that the stoichiometry of C–S–H varies with the calcium hydroxide concentration in solution. However, this issue is still far from understood. We revisit it in both experimental and modelling aspects. A careful analysis of the solubility confirms the existence of three different C–S–H phases, defined as Ca 4 H 4 Si 5 O 16 , Ca 2 H 2 Si 2 O 7 and Ca 6 (HSi 2 O 7 ) 2 (OH) 2 , respectively. Toxicity assessment and biodegradation potential of water-soluble sludge containing 2,4,6-trinitrotoluen

The water-soluble phase of trinitrotoluene-containing sludge (SLP) was characterized with regard to trinitrotoluene (TNT) concentration, ecotoxicity, and a model biodegradation experiment as evaluation criteria for further development of appropriate treatment technologies. SLP contained 67.8 mg TNT/l. The results of germination and root-elongation tests indicated that SLP had a species-specific phytotoxic effect. The results of a 21 day degradation experiment demonstrated TNT conversion to 4-amino-2,6-DNT and 2-amino-4,6-DNT, with a simultaneous reduction in the total concentration of nitroaromatics. Glycoprotein molecules in the walls of Schizosaccharomyces pombe wild-type cells and a morphologically altered mutant resistant to papulacandin B

SUMMARY: Schizosaccharomyces pombe cell walls contain two major glycoprotein species, I and II, with molecular masses of 2 x 106 and 5 x 105 Da respectively, as determined by gel filtration chromatography and PAGE. The ratio of sugar to protein is higher in species I than in species II. Much of the sugar in both glycoproteins (about 85% in wild-type cells) is O-linked to the peptide moiety. The morphological sph1 mutant is resistant to papulacandin B, and its cell wall contains less glycoprotein II (but not less glycoprotein I) than the parental wild-type strain, although glycoprotein II is still synthesized and released into the growth medium.
