Bacteremia after proctoscopy and hemorrhoidal injection sclerotherapy

The incidence of bacteremia following proctoscopy and hemorrhoidal injection sclerotherapy was studied in 50 outpatients undergoing both procedures. Bacteremia was found in 2 per cent of the subjects after proctoscopy and in 8 per cent after sclerotherapy. None of the subjects developed symptoms of septicemia following the procedure. It is concluded that antibiotic prophylaxis should be used before sclerotherapy in patients with valvular heart disease or compromised host defense.

BACKGROUND Despite improvement of lung preservation by the introduction of low-potassium dextran (LPD) solution, ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a major contributor to early post-lung transplant graft dysfunction and mortality. Abstract Purpose: Effective glaucoma therapy relies to a great extent on the patients' ability to regularly self-administer eye drops. This study aimed to assess self-reported nonadherence and to identify potential barriers to adherence in glaucoma patients. Remarkable differences in quality of care (QoC) might be observed in different countries, affecting quality of life of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. In this study, the (a) association of the client- and therapist-rated strength of the real relationship to the outcome of brief psychotherapy, and (b) extent to which the real relationship predicted outcome above and beyond the predictive power of the working alliance were examined. A total of 50 clients at the counseling center of a university in Italy received brief therapy and completed measures before treatment, after the third session, and at the end of treatment. The aim of this study was to examine whether the increase in the energy cost of running (C(r)), previously reported to occur at the end of a prolonged run, could be influenced by the ingestion of either an artificially sweetened placebo (Pl) or a 5.5% carbohydrate (CHO) solution.
