Water Structure Recovery in Chaotropic Anion Recognition: High-Affinity Binding of Dodecaborate Clusters to γ-Cyclodextrin

Dodecaborate anions of the type B12X12(2-) and B12X11Y(2-) (X=H, Cl, Br, I and Y=OH, SH, NH3(+), NR3(+)) form strong (K(a) up to 10(6) L mol(-1), for B12Br12(2-)) inclusion complexes with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD). The micromolar affinities reached are the highest known for this native CD. The complexation exhibits highly negative enthalpies (up to -25 kcal mol(-1)) and entropies (TΔS up to -18.4 kcal mol(-1), both for B12I12(2-)), which position these guests at the bottom end of the well-known enthalpy-entropy correlation for CDs. Characterization of poly(4-vinylpyridine 1-oxide) by free-solution capillary electrophoresis and micellar electrokinetic chromatography

The migration characteristics of poly(4-vinylpyridine 1-oxide) (PVP-NO) in phosphate buffers of acidic pH (20 mM H 3 PO 4 or NaH 2 PO 4 ) have been studied using both free-solution capillary electrophoresis (FSCE) and MEKC. To inhibit adsorption, 250 mM o-phosphoethanolamine (2-aminoethyl dihydrogen phosphate) was used. In FSCE, PVP-NO showed a narrow peak and a broader band, both having anionic behavior. These peak and band were attributed to the free and aggregated or micellized PVP-NO forms, respectively. A method for the separation, characterization and determination of fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAE) and alkylether sulfates (AES) in industrial and environmental samples is described. Separation of the two surfactant classes was achieved in a 50:50 methanol-water medium by retaining AES on a strong anionic exchanger (SAX) whereas most FAE were eluted. After washing the SAX cartridges to remove cations, the residual hydrophobic FAE were eluted by increasing methanol to 80%. Finally, AES were eluted using 80:20 and 95:5 methanol-concentrated aqueous HCl mixtures. International audience; A new method for efficient ionization of sugars in the negative-ion mode of electrospray mass spectrometry is presented. Instead of using strongly hydrophobic dopants such as dichloromethane or chloroform, efficient ionization of sugars has been achieved by using aqueous HCl solution for the first time. This methodology makes it possible to use hydrophilic dopants, which are more appropriate for chromatographic separation techniques with efficient sugar ionization and detection in mass spectrometry. Interaction of metal ions with D-glucobenzothiazoline: isolation and characterization of the resultant products

Six different metal-ion complexes of D-glucobenzothiazoline were synthesized and characterized by analytical and spectral techniques. Formation of different types of species (ML and ML2) were observed with Cu2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Zn2+ ions. Existence of an anomeric mixture in the case of the Cu2+ complex is identified from the EPR spectra, and the results were further supported by the simulated spectra. The structures were proposed based on different studies.
Highly selective fluorescence detection of hydrogen sulfide by using an anthracene-functionalized cyclam-CuII complex

An anthracene-functionalised cyclam-copper(II) complex for the detection of HS- in aqueous environments has been prepared. This probe displays poor fluorescence but can selectively and sensitively detect HS- anions in water over other anions, biothiols and common oxidants such as H2O2 through remarkably enhanced emission. This turn-on response in the presence of the HS- anion is ascribed to a demetallation reaction that inhibits emission quenching observed in the initial complex as a result of the presence of the paramagnetic Cu2+ centre. Micro-hydrogels are very promising systems for the protection and controlled delivery of sensitive bioactives, but limited knowledge exists regarding the impact of this encapsulation on their bioaccessibility. In this work, two different hydrogel-forming biopolymers (gelatin and chitosan) were compared as wall materials for the microencapsulation of a model flavonoid, (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).
