Colon-specific drug delivery: Influence of solution reticulation properties upon pectin beads performance.

In this study, pectinate gel beads were produced by ionotropic gelation method with different solutions of cross-linking agents and ketoprofen was entrapped as model drug. The influence of these formulation parameters was investigated upon bead properties and upon their performance to target the colon. Zinc pectinate beads obtained with 10% of counter-ions solution at pH 1.6 exhibited the strongest gel network due to "egg-box" dimmer formation helped by hydrogen bonding. Furthermore the gel network formed at low pH was arranged in a compact three-fold conformation. Sorption of copper(II) ions in the biomass of alga Spirogyra sp.

Abstract Sorption of copper ions by the alga Spirogyra sp. was investigated to determine the influence of experimental conditions and the methods of sample preparation on the process. The experiments were carried out both under the static and the dynamic conditions. Kinetics and equilibrium parameters of the sorption were evaluated. In addition, the influence was studied of the algae preparation methods on the conductivity of demineralized water in which the algae samples were immersed. The static experiments showed that the sorption of Cu2+ ions reached equilibrium in about 30 min, with approximately 90% of the ions adsorbed in the initial 15 min. Nodal Solutions for Supercritical Laplace Equations

In this paper we study radial solutions for the following equation $$\Delta u(x)+f (u(x), |x|) = 0,$$ where $${x \in {\mathbb{R}^{n}}}$$ , n > 2, f is subcritical for r small and u large and supercritical for r large and u small, with respect to the Sobolev critical exponent $${2^{*} = \frac{2n}{n-2}}$$ . The solutions are classified and characterized by their asymptotic behaviour and nodal properties. In an appropriate super-linear setting, we give an asymptotic condition sufficient to guarantee the existence of at least one ground state with fast decay with exactly j zeroes for any j ≥ 0. The Method of Fundamental Solutions in Solving Coupled Boundary Value Problems for M/EEG

The estimation of neuronal activity in the human brain from electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals is a typical inverse problem whose solution pro- cess requires an accurate and fast forward solver. In this paper the method of fundamental solutions is, for the first time, proposed as a meshfree, boundary-type, and easy-to-implement alternative to the boundary element method (BEM) for solving the M/EEG forward problem. Structural Organization of Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels Obtained by Freezing and Thawing Techniques:  A SANS Study

The structural organization of matter in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels obtained by repeatedly freezing and thawing dilute solutions of PVA in D2O is investigated by use of small-angle neutron scattering measurements (SANS). This study is the first systematic and quantitative investigation in the medium range of length scales on PVA hydrogels obtained by freezing and thawing techniques. The studied gels have a complex hierarchical structure, extending over a wide range of length scales. Abstract We consider the Laplace equation in a domain of R n , n ≥ 3 , with a small inclusion of size ϵ . On the boundary of the inclusion we define a nonlinear nonautonomous transmission condition. For ϵ small enough one can prove that the problem has solutions. In this paper, we study the local uniqueness of such solutions.

The biodegradable metals, including magnesium (Mg), are a convenient alternative to permanent metals but fast uncontrolled corrosion limited wide clinical application. Formation of a barrier coating on Mg alloys could be a successful strategy for the production of a stable external layer that prevents fast corrosion. A generalized Degn–Harrison reaction–diffusion system: Asymptotic stability and non-existence results

Abstract In this paper we study the Degn–Harrison system with a generalized reaction term. Once proved the global existence and boundedness of a unique solution, we address the asymptotic behavior of the system. The conditions for the global asymptotic stability of the steady state solution are derived using the appropriate techniques based on the eigen-analysis, the Poincare–Bendixson theorem and the direct Lyapunov method. Numerical simulations are also shown to corroborate the asymptotic stability predictions. Moreover, we determine the constraints on the size of the reactor and the diffusion coefficient such that the system does not admit non-constant positive steady state solutions.

AbstractIn cultured human fibroblasts incubated under hypertonic conditions, the stimulation of system A for neutral amino acid transport, associated to the increased expression of the mRNA for SNAT2 transporter, leads to an expanded intracellular amino acid pool and to the recovery of cell volume. A protein of nearly 60 kDa, recognized by an antiserum against SNAT2, is increased both in the pool of biotinylated membrane proteins and in the total cell lysate of hypertonically stressed cells. The increased level of SNAT2 transporters in hypertonically stressed cells is confirmed by immunocytochemistry.
