Longitudinal analysis of taurine induced effects on the tear proteome of contact lens wearers and dry eye patients using a RP-RP-Capillary-HPLC-MALDI…

2012

Tear proteomic studies revealed distinct similarities between contact lens wearers and dry eye patients. AMO Complete® multipurpose contact lens cleaning solutions containing taurine seem to have a beneficial effect regarding contact lens induced dry eye. To illuminate the effect of taurine on the tear proteome of contact lens wearers and sicca patients we developed a gel-based RP-RP capillary HPLC-MALDI TOF/TOF MS strategy. Two contact lens wearer groups, one using eye drops containing 0.05% taurine; the other for control physiological NaCl solution were monitored. Also, a third group of sicca patients using taurine solution was studied (N=4 individuals/group). Tear pools of each group at …

Corneal thickness differences between sexes after oxybuprocaine eye drops.

2014

PURPOSE We aimed to analyze the corneal thickness (CT) values of female and male subjects before and after instillation of oxybuprocaine 0.4% anesthetic eye drops. METHODS The CT of 30 female subjects and 28 male subjects was measured using scanning-slit corneal topography (Orbscan Topography System II, Orbscan, Inc, Salt Lake City, UT). Measurements were carried out before and 3 minutes after the instillation of oxybuprocaine 0.4% eye drops. RESULTS The difference between the baseline values and those obtained after anesthesia ranged as follows: male subjects: central, -26 to +24 μm; superior, -24 to +23 μm; inferior, -19 to +20 μm; nasal, -25 to +30 μm; and temporal, -21 to +20 μm; female…

Benign oral vascular lesions treated by sclerotherapy with ethanolamine oleate : a retrospective study of 43 patients

2017

Background Although sclerotherapy is a common treatment for benign oral vascular lesions, there is no well-standardized protocol for this purpose. The aim of the present study was to describe the clinical characteristics of patients treated by sclerotherapy with ethanolamine oleate (EO), in order to contribute to a better understanding of this technique. Material and Methods Medical records and images of 90 patients treated by the same sclerotherapy protocol were retrieved and analysed. Thus, 43 cases with complete information were selected and described. Results The most affected age group was 41–70 years, with a female predominance and 86% of patients being Caucasian. Lips were the most a…

Topical Voriconazole as Supplemental Treatment for Acanthamoeba Keratitis

2020

Purpose Voriconazole was shown to inhibit ergosterol synthesis in various acanthamoeba species. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of treatment with supplemental topical voriconazole in patients with acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). Methods All patients who had been treated for AK with voriconazole 1% drops in conjunction with topical first-line antiacanthamoeba therapy composed of polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) 0.02% and propamidine isethionate 0.1% (Brolene) between November 2014 and August 2017 at the Department of Ophthalmology, University Medical Center Mainz, were included. The main outcomes were treatment failure and recurrence rate. Secondary outcomes wer…

Corneal Thickness Response after Anesthetic Eye Drops: Our Own Results and Meta-Analysis.

2017

We aimed to test if there are different patterns in the central corneal thickness (CCT) response after instilling oxybuprocaine anesthetic eye drops and also to determine whether there is a significant change in the CCT. CCT was measured in 60 eyes of 60 healthy subjects before and during the hour after oxybuprocaine 0.4% eye drops were instilled. In addition, a systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out in order to answer the following PICO (patient, intervention, comparison, and outcome) question: What effect do anesthetic eye drops have on CCT values? We found no significant changes in the mean CCT values during the hour’s observation (ANOVA, p=0.209), and the meta-analysis rev…

Ocular Penetration of Topically Applied Norfloxacin 0.3% in the Rabbits and in Humans

1992

The kinetics of topically applied norfloxacin 0.3 percent were studied in rabbit and man. All measurements were performed by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Norfloxacin concentrations were investigated five to 120 minutes in rabbit ocular tissues after instillation of a single drop. In normal eyes, after 30 minutes, mean +/- SEM levels were 14.3 +/- 3.7 micrograms/g in cornea, 3.3 +/- 0.7 micrograms/g in conjunctiva, 0.2 +/- 0.1 microgram/g in aqueous humor. After removal of the corneal epithelium concentrations were as follows: 84.2 +/- 15.8 micrograms/g, 7.3 +/- 2.3 micrograms/g, 8.6 +/- 1.9 micrograms/g respectively. Penetration in posterior ocular tissues were rather poor. In human…

Phase 1B Study of the Pharmacokinetics and Safety of Posaconazole Intravenous Solution in Patients at Risk for Invasive Fungal Disease

2014

ABSTRACT This was a phase 1B, dose-ranging, multicenter, pharmacokinetics, and safety study of cyclodextrin-based posaconazole intravenous (i.v.) solution administered through a central line to subjects at high risk for invasive fungal disease (part 1 of a 2-part study [phase 1B/3]). Initially, the safety and tolerability of single-dose posaconazole i.v. 200 mg ( n = 10) were compared with those of a placebo ( n = 11). Subsequently, 2 doses were evaluated, posaconazole i.v. 200 mg once daily (q.d.) ( n = 21) and 300 mg q.d. ( n = 24). The subjects received twice-daily (b.i.d.) posaconazole i.v. on day 1, followed by 13 days of posaconazole i.v. q.d., then 14 days of posaconazole oral suspen…

Bacteremia after proctoscopy and hemorrhoidal injection sclerotherapy

1981

The incidence of bacteremia following proctoscopy and hemorrhoidal injection sclerotherapy was studied in 50 outpatients undergoing both procedures. Bacteremia was found in 2 per cent of the subjects after proctoscopy and in 8 per cent after sclerotherapy. None of the subjects developed symptoms of septicemia following the procedure. It is concluded that antibiotic prophylaxis should be used before sclerotherapy in patients with valvular heart disease or compromised host defense.

Lung Preservation With Perfadex or Celsior in Clinical Transplantation: A Retrospective Single-Center Analysis of Outcomes.

2015

BACKGROUND Despite improvement of lung preservation by the introduction of low-potassium dextran (LPD) solution, ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a major contributor to early post-lung transplant graft dysfunction and mortality. After favorable experimental data, Celsior solution was used in our clinical lung transplant program. Data were compared with our historic LPD cohort. METHODS Between January 2002 and January 2005, 209 consecutive lung transplantations were performed with LPD. These were compared to 208 transplants between February 2005 and September 2007 with Celsior. Endpoints included posttransplant PaO2/FiO2 ratio at different timepoints after intensive care unit (ICU) admiss…

Pain and swelling after periapical surgery related to the hemostatic agent used: anesthetic solution with vasoconstrictor or aluminum chloride.

2011

Objective: To assess pain and swelling in the first 7 days after periapical surgery and their relationship with the agent used for bleeding control. Study Design: A prospective study was conducted between October 2006 and March 2009. Patients subjected to root surgery, who completed the questionnaire and who consented to the postoperative instructions were included in the study. The subjects were divided into two groups according to the hemostatic agent used: A) gauze impregnated with anesthetic solution with vasoconstrictor; or B) aluminum chloride. The patients were administered a questionnaire, and were asked to record the severity of their pain and swelling on a plain horizontal visual …
