Guest Editorial Special Section on Recent Trends and Developments in Industry 4.0 Motivated Robotic Solutions

2018

The twelve papers in this special section focus on the development of robotic solutions for smart factories in industry - the concept of the fourth industrial revolution (industry 4.0). The inclusion of robotics is expected to deeply change the future manufacturing and production processes, and lead to smart factories that will benefit from the main design principles of Industry 4.0: interoperability, virtualization, decentralization, real-time capability, service orientation, and modularity. Robotics will have a key role in this development since innovative technologies and solutions, traditionally associated with the service robotics sector, are going to migrate to industrial smarter robo…

Existence of a traveling wave solution in a free interface problem with fractional order kinetics

2021

Abstract In this paper we consider a system of two reaction-diffusion equations that models diffusional-thermal combustion with stepwise ignition-temperature kinetics and fractional reaction order 0 α 1 . We turn the free interface problem into a scalar free boundary problem coupled with an integral equation. The main intermediary step is to reduce the scalar problem to the study of a non-Lipschitz vector field in dimension 2. The latter is treated by qualitative topological methods based on the Poincare-Bendixson Theorem. The phase portrait is determined and the existence of a stable manifold at the origin is proved. A significant result is that the settling time to reach the origin is fin…

Multiple Non-linear Reservoirs to Model Water Balance Components in Sandy Soils

2023

In the hydrologic literature, to model water flow in unsaturated soils, the Richards equation is usually applied, allowing the main components of the hydrologic cycle, as rainfall partitioning into surface runoff and infiltration, to be determined. The Richards equation is highly nonlinear, making very challenging to derive analytical solutions. Recently, for constant rainfall intensity, under the simplified hypothesis of gravity-driven infiltration, and by assuming a capacitance framework, a simplified solution of the Richards equation that considers the Brooks and Corey hydraulic conductivity function was suggested. By maintaining the assumption that the infiltration process is dominated …

Potentiality of extensive green roofs soils in sustaining Mediterranean annual dry grassland of the EU-Habitat 6220*

2015

Nature-based solutions are defined as living solutions inspired by, continuously supported by and using nature (Final Report of the Horizon 2020 Expert Group on 'Nature-Based Solutions and Re-Naturing Cities'). In line with this statement and according to the European research and innovation policy agenda, green roofs (GRs) represent a fundamental requisite for urban sustainable development, being potential stepping stones for plants and animals, including those characterizing habitats of Community interest. In our work, we tested the suitability of green roofs in hosting Mediterranean annual dry grassland of the 92/43 ECC Habitat 6220* (pseudo-steppe with grasses and annuals of the Thero-B…

La scelta delle piante destinate al verde ornamentale tra percezioni e cambiamenti: Anthosart green tool, uno strumento per conoscere, selezionare, a…

2019

The presence and importance of plant life on the planet does not seem to reach our sensory perception, therefore activate reactions of interest, and correct ecological behaviour. The increasing number of extinct species witnesses the human oblivion towards ecosystems. The concept of plant blindness describes the phenomenon that produces significant consequences on nature conservation. Urban green infrastructure, part of our daily life, is the right place to re-connect with plant systems. Designing and creating “built green” by means of nature-based solutions and local species pool is the main goal of Anthosart green tool, a free and user-friendly on-line tool, which can be useful for design…

Bright spots as climate‐smart marine spatial planning tools for conservation and blue growth

2021

Marine spatial planning that addresses ocean climate-driven change (‘climate-smart MSP’) is a global aspiration to support economic growth, food security and ecosystem sustainability. Ocean climate change (‘CC’) modelling may become a key decision-support tool for MSP, but traditional modelling analysis and communication challenges prevent their broad uptake. We employed MSP-specific ocean climate modelling analyses to inform a real-life MSP process; addressing how nature conservation and fisheries could be adapted to CC. We found that the currently planned distribution of these activities may become unsustainable during the policy's implementation due to CC, leading to a shortfall in its s…

Bio-based Materials. Standardizzazione e processi per la commercializzazione

2021

2022

Achieving sustainable development goals in port cities is an increasingly challenging task as the trend is toward their expansion for global competition, thus increasing their impacts on soil, atmosphere, water, and marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The present contribution proposes to explore the Building with Nature approach developed by EcoShape and Deltares in the Dutch context through the comparison of case studies and to highlight some critical issues in its transferability to the Italian context.

Theoretical Predictions and experimental determination of cloud point curves for polymeric solutions: an application to the ternary system Poly-lacti…

2011

The lattice fluid model with specific interactions was applied to the ternary system Poly-L-lactic-acid (PLLA)-dioxane-water. Model parameters were determined by fitting experimental data. The as-obtained parameters were used to calculate the complete phase diagram. An experimental apparatus for cloud point measurements, which is under construction, is presented.

Performance of the first reverse electrodialysis pilot plant for power production from saline waters and concentrated brines

2016

Abstract This work reports experimental data collected for the first time on a full-scale RED pilot plant operated with natural streams in a real environment. The plant – located in the South of Italy – represents the final accomplishment of the REAPower project ( www.reapower.eu ). A RED unit equipped with almost 50 m2 of IEMs (125 cell pairs, 44x44 cm2) was tested, using both artificial and natural feed solutions, these latter corresponding to brackish water (≈0.03 M NaClequivalent) and saturated brine (4–5 M NaClequivalent). A power output up to around 40 W (i.e. 1.6 W/m2 of cell pair) was reached using natural solutions, while an increase of 60% was observed when testing the system with…
