Preliminary study on analysis and removal of wax from a Carrara marble statue

2015

This preliminary study has mainly focused on the wax identification by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and removal. Wax is used for many purposes in the field of art as protective coatings on wooden, stone or metal objects. From the comparison of the spectra H NMR and in particular with the correspondence of the resonance peaks of the samples taken from the statue and beeswax and paraffin, we can conclude that the wax applied on the statue surface is beeswax. From our data, it can be concluded that, to remove the beeswax, from any stone support, the more effective solvent is the mixture of cyclohexane/ethyl acetate. The removal percentages ranged from 19 to 99%. Lower percentages of remova…

A comprehensive untargeted metabonomic analysis of human steatotic liver tissue by RP and HILIC chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry reveals i…

2011

Steatosis, or excessive accumulation of lipids in the liver, is a generally accepted previous step to the development of more severe conditions like nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. We aimed, to characterize the metabolic profile that defines simple steatosis in human tissue and to identify potential disturbances in the hepatic metabolism that could favor the switch to progressive liver damage. A total of 46 samples, 23 from steatotic and 23 from nonsteatotic human livers, were analyzed following a holistic LC-MS-based metabonomic analysis that combines RP and HILIC chromatographic separations. Multivariate statistical data analysis satisfactorily classified samples an…

Pearl-necklace structures of molecular brushes with rigid backbone under poor solvent conditions: A simulation study

2010

Bottle-brush polymers, where flexible side chains containing N=20 to 50 effective monomers are grafted to a rigid backbone, are studied by molecular dynamics simulations, varying the grafting density σ and the solvent quality. Whereas for poor solvents and large enough σ the molecular brush is a cylindrical object, homogeneous in axial direction, for intermediate values of σ an axially inhomogeneous structure of "pearl-necklace" type is formed. The "pearls," however, have a strongly nonspherical ellipsoidal shape, due to the fact that several side chains cluster together in one pearl, qualitatively consistent with predictions of Sheiko et al. [Eur. Phys. J. E 13, 125 (2004)] We analyze the …

Retention mechanisms for basic drugs in the submicellar and micellar reversed-phase liquid chromatographic modes.

2008

The reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RPLC) behavior (retention, elution strength, selectivity, efficiency, and peak asymmetry) for a group of basic drugs (beta-blockers), with mobile phases containing the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and acetonitrile, revealed different separation environments, depending on the concentrations of both modifiers: hydro-organic, submicellar at low surfactant concentration and high concentration of organic solvent, micellar, and submicellar at high concentration of both surfactant and organic solvent. In the surfactant-mediated modes, the anionic surfactant layer adsorbed on the stationary phase interacts strongly with the positively ch…

Start-Up of Chitosan-Assisted Anaerobic Sludge Bed Reactors Treating Light Oxygenated Solvents under Intermittent Operation

2021

Quality of the granular sludge developed during the start-up of anaerobic up-flow sludge bed reactors is of crucial importance to ensure the process feasibility of treating industrial wastewater such as those containing solvents. In this study, the microbial granule formation from suspended-growth biomass was investigated in two chitosan-assisted reactors. These reactors operated mimicking industrial sites working with night closures treating a mixture of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and 1-ethoxy-2-propanol. Each reactor operated under different hydrodynamic regimes typical from UASB (R1: &lt

Nanoemulsions for synthesis of biomedical nanocarriers

2021

Nanoemulsions are kinetically stabilized emulsions with droplet sizes in the nanometer scale. These nanodroplets are able to confine spaces in which reactions of polymerization or precipitation can take place, leading to the formation of particles and capsules that can act as nanocarriers for biomedical applications. This review discusses the different possibilities of using nanoemulsions for preparing biomedical nanocarriers. According to the chemical nature, nanocarriers prepared in nanoemulsions are classified in polymeric, inorganic, or hybrid. The main synthetic strategies for each type are revised, including miniemulsion polymerization, nanoemulsion-solvent evaporation, spontaneous em…

Low temperature optical spectroscopy of low-spin ferric hemeproteins

1996

We report the Soret absorption spectra (500-350 nm) of the cyanomet derivatives of human hemoglobin and horse myoglobin, in the temperature range 300-20 K and in two different solvents (65% v/v glycerol-water or 65% v/v ethylene glycol-water). In order to obtain information on stereodynamic properties of active site of the two hemeproteins, we perform an analysis of the band profiles within the framework of electron-vibrations coupling. This approach enables us to single out the various contributions to the spectral bandwidth, such as those arising from non-radiative decay of the excited electronic state (homogeneous broadening) and from the coupling of the electronic transition i) with hig…
