The dieback syndrome affecting Quercus ilex and other oak species impels the search for tolerant plant genotypes, as well as methods of plant immunization against such infections. In many crops, anther culture is the most used method to induce gametic embryogenesis, aimed to regenerate homozygous plants. Somatic embryogenesis was obtained through anther culture of Citrus reticulata, cv. Mandarino Tardivo di Ciaculli. The work was carried out to evaluate the response of somatic embryos inside a sodium alginate coating to different storage periods, and to the effects of the germicide PPM (1 ml l(-1) stop) and the fungicide Thiophanate-methyl (100 mg l(-1) stop). The effect of these alone or in combination, added to the artificial endosperm on the performance of the encapsulated somatic embryos was tested. Rearing of Prays citri on callus derived from lemon stigma and style culture

A new method for rearing the citrus flower moth (Prays citri Mill.) (Lepidoptera, Yponomeutidae) on lemon [Citrus limon (L.) Burm.] callus is reported. In the present research callus (an undifferentiated mass of plant cells that can be grown under sterile conditions on an artificial medium in vitro) was induced from lemon stigma and style explants cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 500 mg l -1 malt extract, 13.3 μM 6-benzylaminopurine, and 146 mM sucrose.  In vitro somatic embryogenesis was achieved from zygotic embryo explants of a woody angiosperm species, the spindle tree, cultivated on various culture media differing in their sugar type and concentration, or in the applied osmotic potential. The highest frequency of somatic embryogenesis was obtained with a 350 mM sucrose, or a 89 mM glucose concentration in the culture medium. Experiments with culture media differing only in osmotic potential indicated that a minimal threshold osmotic potential is required to stimulate the emergence of somatic embryos. A morphological and anatomical study of regenerants obtained from mandarin anther culture was carried out. Beside morphologically normal somatic embryos, abnormal structures were originated in the course of somatic embryogenesis. Anatomical anomalies can be found at several growth stages, causing the formation of slender stems, stubby structures, non-functional leaves.
