The Effect of 16-Minute Thermal Stress and 2-Minute Cold Water Immersion on the Physiological Parameters of Young Sedentary Men
2020
This study aimed to determine the effect of 16 minutes of thermal stress followed by 2 minutes of cold water immersion on the physiological parameters of fifty-five sedentary men (mean age 20.15±1.30 years), who were exposed to 16 minutes of sauna (temperature: 90-91℃; relative humidity: 14-16%) followed by 2 minutes of cold water immersion (12℃). The participants' somatic characteristics were determined before entering the sauna, and their body mass and blood pressure were measured before and after sauna treatment. Physiological parameters were monitored during the 16-minute sauna session and the 2-minute cold water immersion (CRIO) or shower. The subjects perspired 0.21-0.27 litres during…
Targeting the tumor mutanome for personalized vaccination therapy
2012
Next generation sequencing enables identification of immunogenic tumor mutations targetable by individualized vaccines. In the B16F10 melanoma system as pre-clinical proof-of-concept model, we found a total of 563 non-synonymous expressed somatic mutations. Of the mutations we tested, one third were immunogenic. Immunization conferred in vivo tumor control, qualifying mutated epitopes as source for effective vaccines.
Somatic Embryogenesis and Plant Regeneration from Hypocotyl Cultures of Digitalis obscura L.
1986
Summary Hypocotyl sections from 20-day-old seedlings of Digitalis obscura L. were used to examine the effect of IAA on somatic embryogenesis. Although embryogenesis was obtained with all IAA concentrations (0.1, 0.5 and 1 ppm) and under both illumination conditions tested (16 h photoperiod and darkness), incubation in photoperiod increased yield of embryos and shortened the embryo induction time. Optimum results were obtained with 1 ppm IAA. About 30 % of the embryos obtained developed into complete plantlets when transferred to basal medium without growth regulators.
Biomedyczne aspekty kształtowania płci somatycznej : znaczenie prenatalnego okresu życia
2016
Human sexuality affects many biological, psychological and social aspects. It is connected with gender identity, procreation, experiencing and giving pleasure. From a biological perspective sexual activity is essential for reproduction and its original purpose was to maintain the human species. The article presents the genetic basis of sex determination, differentiation of germ line cells, development of gonads as well as internal and external genital organs, significant for the development of gender identity and propagation. Several factors determining and disrupting proper development of human sex were presented in this article

Socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health complaints : a multilevel latent class analysis in 45 countries
2022
AbstractOur study evaluated the relationship between adolescent health complaints and socioeconomic position in 45 countries. Data are from the 2017/2018 international Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey which used proportionate sampling among adolescents aged 11 to 15 years old (n=228,979). Multilevel, multinomial regression analysis assessed the association between the multilevel latent classes with socioeconomic status (SES; at the household and country level). Three distinct latent classes were identified: No Complaints, Psychological Complaints, and a Physical and Psychological Complaints class; where, low household SES was highest for the physical and psychological complai…
Assessing the Structural Validity and Measurement Invariance of the Psychological Problems Scale on a Sample of International Students
2021
Abstract Objective: The main purpose of the current study is to examine the factorial structure of the Psychological Problems (PP) scale, which is an inventory used for assessing anxious and depressive symptoms. No previous studies were found in which the dimensionality of the measure has been examined. Method: In order to test the underlying factorial structure of the scale, we performed both exploratory principal axis factor analysis and maximum likelihood robust confirmatory factor-analytic analysis on a sample of 266 international students. Parallel analysis was also computed to identify the number of factors to take into account. Multigroup confirmatory factor analyses were performed t…
Warming temperatures and ectoparasitic sea lice impair internal organs in juvenile Atlantic salmon
2021
As a consequence of climate change and open net-pen salmon farming, wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar are increasingly likely to encounter elevated temperatures and parasite abundances during their early marine migration. Such stressors can compromise fitness by diminishing liver energy stores and impairing cardiac muscle. To assess whether temperature and infestation by salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis are important correlates of liver energy stores and cardiac muscle performance in juvenile salmon, we experimentally infested fish at 3 abundances of louse infestation (zero, low, and high) and 5 temperatures (10, 13, 16, 19, and 22°C). At the end of the experiment (i.e. when sea lice reac…
New Gynandromorph Records for Chirocephalus diaphanus (Branchiopoda, Anostraca, Chirocephalidae)
2021
We report and describe new Chirocephalus diaphanus Prévost, 1803 gynandromorphs from Tunisia and review the literature of anostracan gynandromorphy and other, possibly associated, somatic aberrations, with comments on their evolutionary significance. Our material has three specimens that are specifically deformed on the left side of the head.
