Spatial distribution of saplings in heavily worn urban forests: Implications for regeneration and management
2012
Abstract We studied the spatial distribution of saplings in the vicinity of other saplings and mature trees in heavily worn urban forests. Our aim was to identify favorable microsites for saplings to regenerate under different levels of wear. We hypothesized that these safe microsites were situated close to tree trunks that might offer shelter from trampling caused by humans and their pet dogs. The distribution of saplings was explored at 0.1–0.6 m to the nearest sapling and 0.1–2 m to the nearest mature tree. Sorbus aucuparia was the most abundant sapling species, followed by Populus tremula , Betula pubescens and Picea abies . These species all tended to cluster with their conspecific sap…
Data from: Effects of undergrowth removal and edge proximity on ground beetles and vascular plants in urban boreal forests
2019
Urban forests are regularly managed for human safety and aesthetic reasons, but they are crucial habitat for many species. Removals of undergrowth occur commonly in these forests, yet the ecological consequences of these operations are poorly understood. We sampled ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and vascular plants along 20-m edge gradients in Finnish urban forests, in five stands treated 0.5−2.5 years earlier with undergrowth removal and in five untreated stands. We hypothesized that undergrowth removal and edge proximity would benefit opportunistic and open-habitat species, whereas shady-habitat species would be affected negatively. Boron mobility in deciduous forest trees in relation to their polyols
2004
Summary • Boron (B) has been found to be phloem mobile in species that translocate polyols, whereas it is almost immobile in other species. The objectives of the present study were to survey B mobility in deciduous trees, and to relate it to the presence of polyols. • The stable isotope 10B was applied as a tracer to mature leaves of seedlings, and growing leaves were subsequently harvested for B isotope analysis. • Extensive B mobility was found in Sorbus aucuparia and Prunus padus, species with high sorbitol content, but also in Ulmus glabra, with only trace amounts of B-complexing polyols. Alnus incana, Fraxinus excelsior, Betula pubescens and Larix sibirica also translocated 10B into ne…
Sorbus madoniensis (Rosaceae), a new species from Sicily
2012
Abstract Sorbus madoniensis, a new species of Sorbus sect. Aria, is described, so far known only from two neighbouring localities on Mt. Carbonara (Madonie mountains, Sicily). It is related to S. graeca, which also occurs in the Madonie, and indeed shares with S. madoniensis one of its localities.
Potential and limitation of combining terrestrial and marine growth records from Iceland
2017
Abstract Seasonally formed, perennial growth increments of various organisms may possibly contain information about past environmental changes, well before instrumental measurements occurred. Such annually resolved proxy records have been mainly obtained from terrestrial archives, with a paucity of similar data originating from marine habitats. Iceland represents ideal conditions to develop both, tree ring (dendro) and bivalve shell (sclero) chronologies from adjacent sites. Here we introduce the first network of Icelandic birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) and rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) dendrochronologies, as well as ocean quahog (Arctica islandica L.) sclerochronologies. In order to identify th…
Biodiversità nella dendroflora italiana
2013
The potential of the Sorb (Sorbus domestica L.) as a minor fruit species in the Mediterranean areas: description and quality traits of underutilized …
2017
Biodiversity linked to fruit cultivation plays a key role in terms of the availability of quality products and nutraceutical compounds for the food industry. Thus underutilized species such as Sorbus domestica L. can be an important resource. The aim of this study was to evaluate 31 local accessions from different growing areas on the Island of Sicily and characterize the fruits according to the biometric-carpological features that constitute their quality in order to understand the potential that this species may have not only regarding the recovery and preservation of genetic resources in the Mediterranean area but also the nutraceutical compounds it offers. The results from this prelimin…

Pīlādžu ogu ķīmiskā sastāva izvērtējums
2015
Darbā izanalizēti savvaļas pīlādžu ogu paraugi no 4 dažādām Latvijas vietām (Rīga, Lielvārde, Engure, Gulbene), pa vienam pīlādžu paraugam no Vācijas un Polijas, kā arī šķirnes pīlādži „Granatnaja” un „Alaja Krupnaja”. Veicot ogu paraugu sauso minerlizāciju tika noteikts kālija, dzelzs, kalcija, magnija, vara un dzelzs saturs. Veikta iegūto rezultātu statistiskā apstrāde.
Acquisizioni filogenetiche e variazioni tassonomiche in alcune rosacee legnose della flora Italiana
2018
